We went to this restaurant for the first time on a recent visit to the city. We were joined by another couple. Bear in mind that this popular Asian Fusion restaurant is located in the Ferry Building, so it’s very busy. Service is pretty efficient but rushed. The server explained that the dishes were served family style, so we ordered two appetizers — Slanted Door spring rolls and pork spare ribs. For the main courses, we chose Shaking Beef, Lemon Grass chicken, cauliflower, and jasmine rice. The spring rolls were very good and made with translucent rice wrappers so they weren’t fried. The pork spare ribs were meaty, but not the fall-off-the-bone tender that I expect from eating ribs. The Shaking Beef is described as filet mignon chunks stir fried and seasoned, but I found my beef tough — not what I would expect from a filet. The lemon grass chicken was tasty but not special. The stir fried cauliflower was very good with a slightly spicy seasoning – it was my favorite! We chose two desserts. Our friends shared an apple tart which they enjoyed. My husband and I shared a coconut custard which was light and delicious. We all drank iced tea. The space in this restaurant is very large with high ceilings and concrete floors. In that respect it can become very noisy here with a lot of people and this space does accommodate many. It was sometimes difficult to have a conversation without speaking very loudly. For the most part this space is not very inviting although there is a good view of the bay. The day we were here it was clear with mild temperatures and we certainly couldn’t complain about that!

Very expensive for the portions and the quality of food. It was pretty bland and not tasty. Papaya salad texture was great but the taste was bland. The shaking beef was a bit tough and the cubes were hidden under huge ugly white onions. Imperial roll was ok but $ 12 for two egg rolls is a bit much, even for SF. They also charge $ 8 for one scoop of white chocolate ice cream(Humphrey Slocombe had just closed) and their vanilla churros are empty! I was expecting more. Service was great but they have a co-ed bathroom where you got to tip the lady cleaning it. Surely they can afford to pay the bathroom staff without the tip jar — we are not at a club. You’re paying for the view and location. This place is always packed.

I finally tried this place after two years of prompting. The ambiance cool, a little loud but lively. The service was excellent, our waiter helped us with suggestions and knew the menu. The cocktails were very good and priced in line with other locations in the city. The food– overall the standard was high. Lots of variety and flavors. As a group of 4 we shared 3 appetizers, 3 entrees &2 desserts. The stand out dishes were the crab noodles, the chicken clay pot & dumplings. My friends loved the imperial rolls which I could not try. The flagship Wagu beef was disappointing. Overall, despite the good food I give this place a 3* as it was so overpriced.

Very overpriced for the selection. However, I appreciated how accommodating they were towards my vegetarian needs. I got the grapefruit and jicama salad, which was wonderful, but it was forgotten and came out far after the rest of the meals. Service was pretty lack luster. Desert was good, especially the vanilla churros. You can pass on the dark chocolate s’mores. Strongly suggest getting the moscow mule!

We had a 9pm reservation on a Monday evening… but arrived earlier & was pleasantly accommodated sooner, after getting our cocktails from the bar. Seating us at a table by the window for a magnificent view of the illuminated bay bridge was a great start :) Our superb server, Daniel was exceptionally helpful w/his suggestions and spot-on dish recommendations: spring rolls, caramel pork, crab cellophane noodles, shaking beef: filet mignon w/lime sauce and a dark chocolate tart paired w/champagne bubbles & cappuccino. I grew up with these traditional Vietnamese dishes and this meal evoked so much nostalgia… even in its contemporary tapas-style cuisine. My date surprised me with a lovely signed cookbook, «Vietnamese Home Cooking» by Charles Phan. Such a wonderful meal and an unforgettable experience in a beautiful locale… especially thanks to our fantabulous server, Daniel*

OMG. This Vietnamese restaurant is a must! I want to work my way through the entire menu. It is pricey but worth the splurge. We enjoyed imperial spring rolls followed by Shaking Beef which is 8 oz of cubed Filet Mignon served atop watercress and served with a dipping sauce. Each bitefull melts in your mouth. Located in the Ferry Building in San Francisco. You need a reservation at lunch time. We were happy to sit at the bar and order our drinks and food. Bartender was very helpful in selecting white wine when I didn’t like the first sample.

The food is 100. The location is nice and the dog art is kinda lame, but honestly, who cares and it’s funny. My biggest issue was our waitress who clearly must have forgotten to fire our order and it took about 40 minutes. The worst part was, she kept helping the tables around us but ignored us! It was so frustrating. She saw me looking and just looked away. Then after I asked a water guy for the check when he tried to give us dessert menus he said OK. Then she came and tried to give us dessert menus too! After paying she still never said a word about whether the kitchen had been backed up or anything. I would have been fine with just an acknowledgment, but not even that. That said, I’m sure this is just a waitress that isn’t great. Worth a try

Just ate lunch here with my two kids and the food was great. The waitress was very helpful with the menu and it was fast service, which we really appreciated since we were with our kids. Ordered the papaya salad, grilled shrimp with vermicelli, shaking beef and clay pot chicken. Kids(and parents) liked it all. The view was also great. Would definitely recommend this place!

Slanted door is a beautiful restaurant overlooking the bay. And they have a nice variety of food, but with the view comes slightly unreasonable prices. All the food was not bad, but nothing out the ordinary. Many of my friends say that it is a much better spot for lunch with a view, so I will come back to give them another shot. I was not a fan of the grab legs though. The crispy imperial rolls and cellophane noodles were our tables favorite, so I recommend them to you.

My significant other and I came here because my parents gave him a birthday certificate at Open Table to eat here. My father had eaten here before when visiting SF for a conference and he had mentioned that it was good. Our reservation was at 2pm which was half an hour before closing time. We didn’t leave until around 3:45pm and I was surprised how many people were still inside the restaurant even thought it was already closed. There was a bouncer and he was fairly nice, making sure we knew that the bar was opened but there were no more tables available. We were seated a few minutes after entering the restaurant. The décor was nice and being able to see the bay was awesome. We got a window table which made the visit even better. Our waiter was friendly and gave us great recommendations. We ordered the following: Imperial Rolls — $ 13 Pina Colada — $ 12 Shaking Beef — $ 38 Cellophane Noodles with Crab — $ 22 Iacopi Farm Brussels Sprouts — $ 12 Jasmine Rice — $ 3 Don’t worry, we ordered a lot but the dishes are fairly small. The imperial rolls were delicious! Make sure to roll them up into the lettuce and add the noodles too. The piña colada was also really good and had more than enough rum in it. The shaking beef was cooked medium rare and was very tender. We both really enjoyed the beef but there were only 6 pieces! For $ 38, I expect a little more than that. The cellophane noodles were okay. The crab was fresh and tasted great but I would probably order the chicken claypot next time. The brussels sprouts were a great addition to the meats we were eating and our waiter had suggested this side based on our order. The jasmine rice was cooked perfectly as well and was a good amount to share between the two of us. Minus one star for being over priced for the amount you get and another star for the noise level. I could never hear what my significant other was saying half the time because it was way too loud so definitely not a romantic restaurant to eat in.

I keep coming back for their turnip cake. In fact, I dream of their turnip cake. It’s like the kind you get at dim sum but so much better. The piña colada is so good, although it’s really a painkiller. Pretty pricey though and very nice for work lunches when you don’t have to pay!

I have been coming to this place since the early 2000’s before they were in the ferry building. I have never had a bad meal here ! We were a party of 4, I requested a bay bridge view which is great at night. We started, with veggie spring rolls mmmmm Then had jicama cabbage salad one of my fav. The BBQ spareribs are super tender with a good sauce. You must try the shaking beef. We also had clay pot chicken. Highly recommend. The churros are light and airy. Mmmm You can not go wrong eating here, it is not cheap but also very very good.

I came here with my family on a Friday night in December after seeing the Nutcracker Ballet. Our reservation was at 5:30pm, right when they reopened for dinner time. We got there about 15 minutes early and waited in line, which got a little cramped as the lounge/bar area was already packed. We only waited a few minites past our reservation time and then got our table, a booth up on a step that overlooked the bay. I was glad we didn’t get a table with chairs that might be in the aisle and feel crowded — the booth was perfect for the 4 of us with plenty of arm room. We ordered drinks and ‘family style’ entrees, which were quickly brought out and spread on the table for us all to share. I loved the chicken dishes, while my boyfriend enjoyed the ribs and others praised the shrimp. For dessert they had seasonal options, so I picked out the gingerbread house while others chose s’mores and a cotton candy Christmas tree. I enjoyed my dinner at the Slanted Door and would definitely recommend it. Just make sure to plan a reservation since it is a popular spot!

This Asian Fusion serves Americanized Vietnamese food plus a mixture of other Asian food as well. There were some good dishes but I was a bit disappointed after hearing how great this place was. I remember ordering the only soup that they have on the menu and it was my favorite of all the dishes because it was delicious. I can’t seem to remember the name though. I’ve also had squids and it reminded me of my mom’s homemade dish, except hers tastes much better, because it’s authentic. It’s packed here and customer service is okay, you might have to wait quite a bit to get what you ordered. The desserts here aren’t original and not impressive. Cotton candy and a gingerbread house for desserts? I never knew a cotton candy can be considered a dessert… last time I checked, it attracted kids at a festival /carnival.

I went with a larger group and the food was preselected and served family style. That isn’t usually my idea of a good time, but this was great. We started with veggie and pork spring rolls and a grapefruit and cabbage salad(sooo good!) Then had spare ribs and some sort of delicious veggie«patty.» The next course was a hot tofu and onion dish, lemongrass beef, chicken with olives and cashews, broccoli, Spinach and spicy shrimp. Everything was delicious, but the lemongrass beef was by far my favorite, it was flavorful, tender, juicy and perfectly cooked. We had a chocolate mousse cake and the signature mint cotton candy for dessert. The mousse was light and not overly sweet. We ended with some French press coffee which was smooth and thick, as it should be. Perfect after all of that food!

I came here on two separate occasions, once for lunch, and more recently, for dinner. The first time I came here in early September, I was by myself and I ate at the bar. I ordered the beef carpaccio with peanuts and mints and sesame cracker on the side. It was a classier version of what I eat at home(instead of a carpaccio style, my aunt dices the beef super finely), so I immensely enjoyed it. I then ordered the bun thit nuong, and although the portion was small, the flavor of the pork was delicious. I wish they included mints, but I realize that most of their customers are not Vietnamese and are probably not accustomed to the classic Vietnamese herbs. When eating at The Slanted Door, I have to remind myself that it does not aim to be an authentic Vietnamese restaurant. Regardless, I still enjoyed that first meal. Service at the bar was pretty quick and the bartender was really attentive to my needs even though I wasn’t ordering alcohol. 4⁄5 I came back to The Slanted Door about two weeks ago with a group of four other friends and we were seated at a booth. I would recommend making reservations ahead of time as it is a very busy and popular restaurant. I’m going to break down each of the items we ordered below! Chilled Wild Louisiana Gulf Shrimp($ 18) — served with spicy cocktail sauce or the Thai basil aioli, the flavor of the shrimp really stands out. However, without a sauce, the shrimps aren’t particularly special; they’re essentially boiled shrimp and then chilled. There aren’t many shrimp served in this appetizer either. I would skip out on this next time. 2⁄5 Ahi Tuna Tartare($ 18) — Chinese olive, preserved lemon relish, rice paper cracker. I really loved the umami flavor of this dish, but the portion was a little on the small side. Because of that, I would also not order this again, but if portion size isn’t an issue for you, consider it! 3⁄5 Crispy Imperial Rolls($ 13) — stuffed with gulf shrimp, pork shoulder, vermicelli noodles, and roasted peanut. I rarely find an egg roll that I enjoy as much or more than my mom’s homemade ones, but I can honestly say that this was an excellent appetizer. You have to get this! 5⁄5 Crispy Wild Florida Frog Legs($ 20) — Thai chiles, garlic, shallots, green onions, five spice chile salt. Based on the description, I thought it would be super yummy, but it was on the bland side. 2⁄5 Barbecued Willis Ranch Pork Spareribs($ 21) — scallion, cilantro, honey-hoisin sauce. This seems more Chinese-inspired than Vietnamese, which isn’t bad, but the salty sweetness of the spareribs were really overpowering and lacked depth. I wish there was some kind of a tart or acidic note to it to balance out the other flavors. These were pretty good though, one of the better appetizers we ordered. 4⁄5 Cellophane Noodles with Dungeness Crab($ 22) — green onions, sesame. Vietnamese people will recognize this as mien xao cua. This was my favorite dish of the night, and honestly, the best version of mien xao cua I have ever had in my life. I would definitely order this again. 5⁄5 Service was on point — attentive but not pushy. Our waiter probably judged us for ordering only one entrée(we honestly thought that the appetizers sounded better than the entrees), but he didn’t make a point of showing it. 5⁄5 Next time I come back, I will definitely order more of the entrees and then update my review. Overall Score: 3.75, so I’m rounding up to a 4.

Came for dinner with my boyfriend after making an online reservation. It’s located right on the water and outside has a beautiful view of the bridge and its lights. The location is prime, and is definitely rather upscale. The food itself was tasty and expensive, however, it wasn’t very Vietnamese. We ordered the ahi tuna and the shaking beef. The ahi tuna was good, a little fishy for my taste though. The shaking beef was well flavored and tender, however I thought it was interesting that the server didn’t ask my preference on how I wanted the meat. For dessert we had the cotton candy, which was huge! It was peppermint flavored and also came with some mini candies as well.

Figured that I had better write my review down before I forget lol Great Asian fusion food. The ingredients are fresh so it’s hard to mess up. Not a lot of cocktail options. Food quality 4star. My friends picked up this place for dinner on a week night. I didn’t realize that I had been here many time till I entered the restaurant. The operation of the space that night was horrible. The management should have done a better job arranging for customers to form a line. There should be two separate lines one for drop ins and the other for reserved customers. Lol the waiting was a disaster. Btw, nice location and view of the bay.

No way. We came to The Slanted Door for lunch and ordered several things. Everyone ranted and raved about this place to me so I knew I HAD to check it out. The décor was confusing to me. The booths didn’t look nice and it just felt off. The party next to us sent a dish back as she stated she didn’t like it so I was already getting skeptical… I had the slanted door spring rolls and felt them to be very bland. They definitely were nothing special. I also had the grilled organic chicken noodle dish and didn’t really like it at all. The only thing that was good was the spicy broccoli. I ended up getting rice and dipping it in the sauce because it was sooo good. That was definitely a stand-out dish(and very spicy). The Slanted Door is very close to my office in San Francisco so I might be back. I heard the bar scene in the evening is good as well so maybe I’ll have to check that out. For now, I don’t believe the hype!

This place was fantastic! Party of five on a busy Saturday. I’m glad we made reservations. We ordered several different types of steak, the catfish clay pot and bok choy. Everything was delicious. There was absolutely not even one little part that wasn’t delicious! I think we ordered five different desserts and all were awesome as well. I’ll come back. My only point of contention is that it’s billed as «family style» when, in fact, it’s a small plate of food. Out of five people, two ordered and our waiter started to leave as if it was enough food. When I interrupted his leaving and ordered more beef, I was met with, «You’re ordering TWO beef dishes?» Yes. Yes I am. He quickly left after I ordered, disregarding the other two people at our table. It was kind of weird. The food we ordered really wasn’t enough. In fact, it was small enough that we each got a dessert, then went elsewhere for snacks immediately afterwards. That’s responsible for the one point deduction. I’d try it again, however, as it was a service issue.

Great food, service needs a little work and the cost of food is way overpriced. Don’t get me wrong, the food was super tasteful but I definitely think its a big over priced. The location is great! It’s right on the pier and great view of the bay bridge. They have great wine selections and it was the perfect room temperature. One of their gin cocktails is pretty good, «Indian Summer»(has some grapefruit). I would also suggest doing family style. What to order: — Crispy imperial rolls w/gulf shrimp, pork shoulder, vermicelli noodles, roasted peanut — Daikon rice cakes w/shiitake mushroom, shallot, sweet chili soy — Grass-fed estancia shaking beef w/8 oz. cubed filet mignon, sausalito watercress, red onion, lime sauce — Caramelized wild gulf shrimp w/garlic, yellow onion, caramel chili sauce — Joyful farm baby bok choy w/baby shiitake mushroom — Hodo soy beanery organic tofu w/pressed tofu, shiitake mushroom, sweet roasted chili sauce, lemongrass

We were staying in financial district in SF and this was w/in walking distance to my hotel. It’s by the pier 1 and has outstanding view. There’s also patio seating if it’s not too cold. Food #Crispy Imperial Roll: about 3 egg rolls cut up with lettuce/noodles. Delicious but standard dish #Cellophane Noodles with Crab: delicious!!! This is exactly how my mom cooked it when I was growing up. Portions kinda small. Super flavorful #Claypot organic chicken: super tender. Sweet, savory and citrusy all together. Need to add order of rice to eat with. #Viet coffee: standard Overall food was delicious but nothing that I can’t get at another Vietnamese restaurant. Portions exceptionally small and given the prices not a great value. However this great place to come to see the pier. The food presentation and ambiance is highlighted here. Service excellent.

Asian fusion? Interesting use of words. The better definition is Americanized vietnamese food served on an expensive plate. This is more along the quality of asking Paula Dean to cook chow mein for you. you give her chow mein ingredients but it doesn’t taste close to what chow mein is supposed to! Dont come here for the food but do come here for the ambience and alcohol only! Living in San Jose where there’s heavy standard & competition between vietnamese restaurants, you would’ve guessed SF would bring more to the plate in this upscale place. Sorry to say that wasn’t the case. The following dishes tried: Crispy imperial rolls: this is literally 2.5 of your normal sized egg rolls cut into 5 small fancy pcs with a side of noodle and lettuce. Nothing fancy, same equivalent as chinese takeout eggrolls. Only difference is this place uses a thinner eggroll wrap which makes a crisper crunch. Live atlantic sea Scallops: Don’t be fooled by the pretty picture. The green sauce didn’t provide any flavor and the Scallops were thinly sliced in about 3−4mm in thickness. Better off eating scallop sashimi with bigger portions elsewhere. Papaya salad: Finally! Something that was tasty! This was the best dish of the night(sadly). Still better off getting papaya salad at an authentic thai restaurant at a cheaper price tho. Mussels: It tastes just like what steam mussel is supposed to taste like. But their dish is cooked in soy milk. Unfortunately it lacked flavor since soy is flavorless(think tofu). Would’ve been better off cooking it in coconut milk or even almond milk. Frog legs: Worst dish. Lacks salt and pepper! Batter is not crispy and you get more bone than meat. Told the waitress that the dish was bland and she took it away before we could even attempt to finish it. Thanks… would’ve been nice to get a discount or a replacement if our barely eaten plate got taken away in that manner. Duck breast: Similar to the marinated the duck from chinese takeout restaurants. Difference is that the flavor is toned down significantly and the breast is more tender. The meat quality is the only good standout of this dish, even tho I wish it had more substance/flavor. Lamb rack: The lamb meat was cooked well, meat is also tender. Got to eat it like a chicken wing by holding the bone. Disappointed in the tamarind sauce tho, tasted too much like McDonald’s sweet and sour sauce. Was expecting more for the price tag. Service: alcohol is served to you fast. Food is a pretty long wait if you order multiple dishes. Sad to say I won’t be back again. There’s too much other better tasting restaurants in SF. Left the place with a smaller wallet & still hungry since the portions were small.

It’s one hell of a high raved about restaurant and I couldn’t help myself but try this place out to understand why there were 4000+ reviews about this place. 1) The little food we ordered — chicken noodles something, ginger flavored halibut and the cotton candy were so flavorful! 2) It was a big sized place filled with fun(loud) people! So if you want a private, romantic place for a date night — this is not for you. 3) It was on the Pier1 facing the waters so we just loved it! It was a perfect sunny/cold afternoon. 4) If you are a dog(art) lover, you are going to go all«awwww» 5) We parked in one of the garages and got it validated(for a discount, I believe) All in all, I won’t mind going back here. One of the BEST meals i’ve had in SF. Wowza. My friend and I went for lunch and sat down inside right away. We requested to sit outside but there was a wait time for outside so we passed and went for an indoor table. We started off by ordering a cocktail. The Drinks: + Singapore Sling = the perfect combination of gin, pineapple & lime juice, bitters, and more + Mai Tai = Classic. Super refreshing and delicious Neither of us had ever been here before so when our server explained that this place was meant to be family style, we were both giddy with excitement since we could now try most of the dishes we wanted to try. The Food: + Mesquite grilled curried niman ranch flat iron steak — cooked medium rare + Grilled Organic Chicken Noodles — with mint, cucumber, and peanut + Chue farm japanese eggplant — YUM + Jasmine Rice(psssst: the size small rice is enough for two) OMG this food was actually A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Great presentation, perfect amount of food for two and amazing flavor. Highly recommend. Definitely on the pricier side but well worth it.

Quite delicious for an Americanized Vietnamese restaurant! My standards for Vietnamese restaurants are very high since I’ve grown up eating here. I was pleasantly surprised with the flavors of each dish. My friends and I came here for lunch after walking around the Farmers Market. We waited only for about 5 minutes before we were lead to a table. Since none of us have had Slanted Door before, we turned to Unilocal for advice. Crispy Imperial Rolls:(3⁄5) We got a half order of the meat and a half order of the vegetarian. The meat one was so much better, especially with the fish sauce provided. Cellophane Noodles w/Dungeness Crab:(4⁄5) They didn’t skimp on the crab and the dish was yummy. Lemongrass Chicken:(5⁄5) The best dish of our meal. The chicken was really juicy and the sauce was spot-on. Japanese Eggplant:(2⁄5) This was suggested by our waiter and I wish we didn’t order this. It cooked well, but the dish itself wasn’t that flavorful. The Slanted Door would have received 4 stars, but everything here is ridiculously over-priced for Vietnamese food. I know places that offer Vietnamese just as good as good as the Slanted Door, but for half the price. Overall, if you want to pay for a great Americanized experience with tasty Vietnamese food, the Slanted Door is a great place to go.

The Slanted Door is one of the cornerstones of the Ferry Building along side Hog Island Oyster Company. Charles Phan’s cuisine was revolutionary back in the day, but today Vietnamese cuisine is fairly ubiquitous and even the most remote parts of the United States are familiar with phở and banh mi. While the Ferry Building is comprised of numerous shops and casual food related items like Cowgirl Creamery, Boccolone and Humphry Slocombe, The Slanted Door is a true sit down experience, although they have a more casual, to go spot as well in the Ferry Building called Out The Door. For the pleasure of a large, gorgeous sit down restaurant with expansive Bay Bridge views, you’re treated to a higher price point, but also full wait service, a bar, and a broad menu. We stopped by for lunch and while Hog Island almost always has a line out the door to the smaller sitting space, the expansive space of The Slanted Door usually means the wait is reasonable, even if the space is almost always completely full and busy. The menu features all the classics from his original restaurant though I thought the portion sizes and price point were higher than I remembered from their original space. In a nod to the fame of Charles Phan, they also sell his two hardcover cookbooks at an eye-opening $ 40. Given the humid weather and having already sampled a variety of eats in the Ferry Building, we welcomed the sit down experience and proceeded to order: Half Dozen Oysters — $ 21. Six super fresh oysters served with a tangy vinaigrette and cocktail sauce started us off right. Perfectly chilled, tasty and a great start. Pricey, yes, but remember the views and the air conditioning. Dungeness Crab Cellophane Noodles — $ 21. One of Charles Phan’s signature dish. It’s not a huge portion but there are visible chunks of Dungeness crab claw meat. Phở Bo — $ 12. A slightly more modern take on the classic Vietnamese soup noodles. The high quality cuts of beef are served partially medium rare and the noodles are my favorite wide rice noodles. It’s not a cheap bowl of phở, but it hits the spot. Broth is not as strong as the noodles and beef and they don’t include any condiments(sriracha, hoisin) standard but have them when asked. Chicken Noodle Soup — $ 11. Their chicken noodle soup is actually more popular than their beef noodle soup and it’s easy to see why. Though they use thin rice noodles, everything else is superior. The broth is much more intense. The chicken is both lean and tender and you never feel the desire to add anything to the great bowl of soup noodles. Moscow Mule — $ 14. Given the heat, it felt right to sample their bar drinks. It was quite refreshing. A bit light on the alcohol but perfectly tasty. You could down a few of these and be very happy. Overall, we had a great meal at the Slanted Door. While the Ferry Building location is more a tourist attraction(what isn’t here!) than a true foodie destination anymore, you can’t help but enjoy the gorgeous Bay views and the tasty food. Prices and portions go in opposite directions, but it’s the price of admission here and I, for one, am willing to pay it. The Slanted Door accepts credit cards including American Express.
