After dining at the Marla Bakery location on Balboa more than a handful of times and having delightful experiences I was excited to learn about the newer Ferry Building location. Brilliant idea for the Ferry Building to create these small, casual spaces. Better idea for Marla Bakery to get a spot here. The menu is quaint and seems sustainable. The ingredients and tastes are fresh. I really appreciate the flavors in the vegetables that were in my sandwich. The staff is super friendly and grateful. The outdoor seating area feels like a new, fun addition to SF culture. Thank you, Marla Bakery! See you soon…

Had the pork sandwich and the side of arugula and beets, both delicious! Just a bit expensive, but what do you expect from the Ferry Building? Good thing the food is really good.

Visited the Ferry Building location to try bakery products. Loved the Chocolate IPA cake. Quality chocolate flavor, delicious frosting that was not too sweet, and you could taste the IPA. Also tried the English muffin with house butter and apple jam, and the honey caramel Kouign Amann. All were excellent. The three items with an iced tea came to $ 22.00, but I do tend to splurge at good bakeries.

This new Marla kiosk is is located next to Gott’s near the entrance of the Ferry Building. I came here on my quest to try all the kougin amanns in my vicinity. Kouign Amann(4.50) — This baby was pretty big and definitely filled me up. It was unfortunately pretty disappointing given it’s price. It was dry and one of the least satisfying kouign amanns I’ve had in SF. To get your fix, I recommend b patisserie. Latte(3.5) — Solid. Blue bottle is overrated so the line is not worth it. Grab yourself a latte from here instead. Plenty of outdoor seating. Good spot to get some fresh air.

As far as bagels with butter go, the one at Marla in the Ferry Building is pretty good… but is it worth $ 6? Not even close.

Great to see the outdoor kiosks are finally open at the Ferry Building. I’m quite excited about this new pasty shop and I’m really digging the breakfast options. Seems pretty high quality all around; definitely a judicious way to splurge on carbs. Seeded Bagel w/Herbed Farmers Cheese & Pickled Onions: The Farmers Cheese is amazing! It was warm and the consistency of hummus, but made from small tasty cheese curds instead of bland chickpea paste. Definitely beats the mass produced cream cheese you can find at the supermarket. The pickled red onions were on the side and offered a nice contrast to the otherwise rich bagel. The bagel itself was tasty. It’s not a NY bagel; they said it was more Montréal-style. I’ve had bagels in Montréal and it’s not quite like that either; same density/consistency but theirs were not as wide as Montréal bagels. Anyway, it worked. English Muffin w/Butter & Preserves: I wasn’t as impressed with this breakfast item as I was the bagel. Using the mass marketed Thomas’ as a comparison, this didn’t seem extraordinarily better. The orange rind preserves were pretty darn tasty though. Sunchoke Frittata w/Cheddar: Kinda like quiche filling in a sandwich. The egg flavor dominated the sunchoke flavor, but was still tasty. The bread was perfectly crispy on the panini-pressed outsides. It was more like the smooth sear of a nice pan grilled cheese sandwich rather than having the vertical grooves from what other places call a panini press. Oddly, the frittata filling remained a tad cool and the cheddar didn’t melt. It was tasty, but I might get some meat next time. Basque Tart: Yes, please! A bunch of vanilla custard sandwiched between flaky crust with some sort of fruit preserves(cherry?). If you like creamy desserts, this is for you. Very rich and goes well with a nice coffee.

SO excited that I no longer have to plan a huge excursion out to Marla Bakery! This little kiosk offers a delicious number of pastries and hot coffee with a fantastic seating area that is great for people watching! I had a quick coffee from here along with picking up one of their Christmas stollens that were being sold at a rapid pace. Their menu board is a little light but they seem to be offering and replenishing their pastries on a regular basis. Welcome to the neighborhood Marla!
