Tom and Jerry’s House

Tom and Jerry’s House will always have a special place in my heart. When I was a kid, my dad would drive my brother and I down the steep, steep hill to check out the fabulous, intricate decorations (as well as the massive, living Christmas tree they have growing year-​round), and it was always so magical. Now, I get to take my fiancé there each holiday season, and it’s just as magical.
PRO TIPS.
+ Park a few blocks away, as the hill is quite steep, and parking can be difficult (if not impossible)
+ Bring your camera (as it truly is a sight to see)
+ Be respectful of the neighbors and keep the noise (as well as traffic) down
+ Also be respectful of the decorations (don’t grab anything or break anything, be nice!)s
I love Tom and Jerry’s House, and as long as I live in the Bay, I’ll be sure to visit during the holidays!

Finally got the chance to visit this house for the first time this holiday season. We came pretty late, probably fifteen minutes before midnight. We were luckily still able to catch it on because literally five minutes after we came, the owner of the house pulled down the switch to shut the whole thing off. We were able to get a picture in before that, phew! This other guy was in the middle of taking his picture and all the lights went off right when he took it. Poor guy :(
Be prepared to drive/​walk up and down a steep hill! I mean, you are in San Francisco… so the hills should be expected. I was afraid that I was gonna slip down because my shoes didn’t have that much of a grip on them.
Totally worth the visit, but not sure how long they keep this whole set up on for. I still don’t get how they could have possibly put a huge Christmas tree right by their house but it’s pretty awesome!

I’m not really into Christmas but I do love Tom and Jerry’s house. Much fun to see and watch the kids enjoy.

Insane! Must visit to get into the holiday spirit if you are in San Fran over the holidays!

This has been a yearly tradition, and I can’t believe I haven’t written a review yet! Ive noticed as I got older, people stopped being in the Christmas spirit. I got harder and harder to spot cool decorations. One place I could always count on though, was the Tom and Jerry House. Every year, they go all out and put up awesome decorations. This has become a Christmas destination that everyone should visit. It will most definitely get you into the Christmas spirit.

If Tom and Jerry’s Christmas décor doesn’t get you in the holiday spirit, NOTHING will.

This is everything I dreamed of and more. The pictures do not do this majestic Christmas Graceland justice and for the love of all that is Holy, please go. It’s just… The best.

These guys are winning at Christmas!

One of our favorite SF Xmas traditions is to just drive by unsuspecting out-​of-​towners past the TJ House. OTT in the best of ways!

Unless your alter ego happens to be «Grinch» and you specialize in stealing Christmas, you’ll find yourself absolutely delighted when you come upon this cheery display. Between the dancing dolls, the chuggin’ train and the giant stockings, among others, Tom and Jerry offer us a chance to connect with other San Franciscans (or visitors) in a low-​key, merry way. Inevitably, the display sparks some conversation or a request to take a picture for another couple or a family, and I enjoyed getting to know them and laughing with them a bit as I offered to take silly pictures as well.
Tom and Jerry, if I should be so lucky to meet you next year, I’m going to give you guys a big hug!

Happy holidays! It’s not just for Christmas participants. It’s for all adults and children who need a bit of wonder in their lives.

What a great treat! I can’t imagine the electricity bill, but totally appreciate the sacrifice. Complete and utter eye candy for the holidays!

It’s Christmas time. Girlfriend wanted to see something Christmas-y…so I came here. It’s in a random location in the Castro, but I appreciate the work these guy put in to make this place a nice neighborhood attraction!
Not sure what the scary doll next to the rollercoasters is about but everything else is pretty awesome. Santa is supposed to be there until 10pm during the season, but he was no where to be found on ¹²⁄₂₁ at 9:30pm. The lights turned off for us around 10:20pm.
Make sure you practice your parallel parking skills on hillsides. This home is on a pretty steep hill. You’ll hear a bunch of cars peeling out due to novice drivers trying to pull away from the site.
Anyway, it’d be cooler if all the houses on the street got in on the Christmas spirit, but for now, this home will be the star showing! Thanks Tom and Jerry!

It’s kinda like «Field of Dreams» only it doesn’t take place in an Iowa corn field but outside a quaint Victorian on Castro Hill. «If you decorate it, they will come.» Strangely, I can relate to Tom and Jerry’s calling. They probably started with one oversized ornament just like I started with one review, and now look at us all these years later. Models of excess that attract undue attention. Actually for them, it started with a house plant in 1973 that grew into a 65-​foot Norfolk Island pine, the centerpiece for the most lavish display of Christmas decorations to be found in the city (photo:

Even though they’ve been doing this for a quarter-​century, I only became aware of it when I saw the Mooncricket aerial holiday video last year and wondered where such an elaborately decorated house could be. Well, duh. Of course, it’s in the Castro. I should have known from the rotating Barbies and big pink teddy bear (photo:
). Yes, the owners’ names are truly Tom and Jerry, but there is nothing cat-​and-​mouse about this display unless they’re sitting on the toy trains that circle the tree. Lest there be any question, Tom and Jerry have their names emblazoned on a pair of 12-​foot stockings hanging over the garage (photo:

It takes an army of «elves» (union, I hope) about six weeks to put up the 5,000+ decorations, and they even have a Santa sitting on the bench in the evenings leading up to Christmas Eve. I don’t know if he tells you if you’re good or bad, but he does tell you to watch the pavement cracks since a fall could be fatal on this slope of 21^st Street. The decorations are up by December 12 and remain until New Year’s Day. It’s lit up in the evenings until about 10PM. Be mindful that it is a quiet residential block, so parking away from the property is encouraged or MUNI works if you don’t mind the steep incline. They don’t accept personal donations which just shows you how generous their holiday spirit truly is.

Thank you, Tom and Jerry, for putting up elaborate Christmas decorations for my kids to see so that I don’t have to.

T&J’s house is a must see contribution to the outrageous over-​the-​top holiday decorations in the Castro.

Tom and Jerry’s House is a hidden gem in the Castro. It’s worth at least one visit at night during the Christmas holiday season. It’s even better if you can make two visits here, one at night and one in the day.
Tucked away on a steep hill in a quiet residential area, Tom and Jerry’s House is hard to miss. The large Christmas tree, which is at least three stories tall, is lit so brightly that you can see it from blocks away. The house is also decorated with a pair of red stockings — one named «Tom» and one named «Jerry» — both stuffed with so many plush toys you could imagine. There’s a train circling the large tree, piles of presents at the base of the tree, a pink marionette bear, and a cool Ferris wheel on display. Most importantly, there’s also Santa who hands out candy canes and takes photos with you.
If you’re trying to avoid the crowds and tourists gawking at the Union Square Christmas tree, stop by Tom and Jerry’s instead. It’s worth the walk up the steep hill and parking is more abundant.
