I was in visiting from LA a couple months ago and decided to pop in here because I saw that they were having a Dali exhibition. I walked in feeling pretty excited. I left feeling insulted. They had a lot of his lithographs in the gallery but none from the series I was looking for. The pieces they did have were also a bit more money than other galleries I’ve purchased from. Truthfully, I was just browsing but I would have purchased something had I liked it and thought it was a good value… At least until I spoke to someone. I’m young… and I hate to pull this card but I think they thought I walked in off the street with no money in my pocket. Yes, I’m on vacation. Yes, I’m in a Disneyland hoodie. But guess what? I can afford your art. I’m not sure if he was the owner of the gallery or an associate there. However, the person I spoke to was actually pretty rude once I was able to get him to even acknowledge my presence, which took some effort. In between talking down to me the entire time, his sales pitch also involved convincing me to buy things I didn’t want and accusing me of not being a serious customer. I told him I wasn’t interested in sculptures and he kept trying to talk me into them, but in a you’re-so-stupid-for-not-wanting-them kind of way. He also tried talking me into other pieces when I started asking if he had the series I was looking for, which he didn’t have. He did finally tell me he could find what I was looking for… «I can make a phone call and get whatever you want as long as you’re serious about it. Just tell me you’re serious about it. All I have to do is pick up the phone. A lot of people come in here and waste my time and don’t buy anything.» Verbatim. Those were his words. I’m sure there are über-wealthy customers who walk in and just buy whatever and don’t care. From the experience I had, this seems like the kind of place who expects and appreciates that kind of customer. Or maybe they couldn’t see the Dolce & Gabbana label on my t-shirt underneath my hoodie. Either way, I like to buy from a gallery that wants to develop a relationship with me as a client. And not an abusive one.

A beautiful gallery with lovely mediums in photography, sculpture, and paintings. My friend and I stopped in to browse when we were captivated by the window displays. Many of the sculptures appear to be made by the same artist. Some of the photography was a new medium to me, such as a photographer who stretched the photos on mesh fabric and stretched them with the same picture behind it to give a 3D effect. The salesman was courteous, interested in us and talked with us about what we were interested in along with some information regarding a couple of the artists he featured. I didn’t find anything that suited me to take home, but I really enjoyed viewing the art and the service experienced here.
