Ay Chung is closed but the replacement restaurant serves the same exact menu but with better décor. With that being said their stinky tofu and chicken nuggets still rock. Their price for both are very cheap. And you get a TON of stinky tofu that is quite stinky if I might say. You’ll for sure get your monies worth. The quality itself is just under Tofu King but if you just want a big basket of stinky tofu to munch on for super cheap I would recommend going to this place, instead. The chicken nuggets also come in a large basket that is very very cheap. If you get both that and the stinky tofu you won’t be able to finish. :) Which is awesome to have extras!

I like the flour rice here. The portion is big and price is decent. The crispy chicken is soso.

It’s a typical Taiwanese comfort food place where you can order a cheap bowl of beef noodle soup, thin noodles, or stinky tofu. Each noodle bowl is probably not more than $ 5 – 6. Since I am not a fan of intestines, the thin noodle soup wasn’t my favorite because of the tiny pieces of intestines floating around. But the broth itself was tasty. I also don’t like stinky tofu, but this place would be good for those who don’t like it too pungent and are okay with it having barely the ass/bad breath smell. Although I didn’t get to personally try the beef noodle soup(I only got to steal some from a friend), the broth tasted spicy and flavorful. If I go back I definitely want to try this one. No comment on service because I have low expectations for Asian places, but expect to wait a bit before being paid attention to. The restaurant itself is a little easy to miss since there is no big sign, but it’s on the 2nd floor and you can smell the stinky tofu scent wafting out the door. That is not hard to miss at all. Parking can be disastrous during the weekends, but it’s better if you park underground, away from the crowds near the 99ranch supermarket. It’s a lot less stressful.

Difficult to park, a little hard to locate, and service was extremely inconsistent but the food is WOW, amazing! If the food weren’t so delicious I would have given this place 2 stars. I came here on a Sunday afternoon and there was only one person waiting tables for the whole place, which was 2/3rds full. People were so impatient for food that they walked up to the kitchen area and just grabbed it. Two tables of older customers were served before my bf and I even got our food, even though they sat down 10 minutes after we were seated. We ordered minced pork rice, stinky tofu, two boba milk teas, and a house special noodle. The dishes I liked the best were the stinky tofu and minced pork rice. The house special noodle tasted more liked comfort food — warm, full of flavor, but not spicy. I loved the stinky tofu the best because it came with ample pickeled cabbage, crushed FRESH garlic, and sauce. I could taste the sting of the garlic when scarfing down these huge tofu pieces. I couldn’t put down the minced pork rice either — it was the right blend of savory, sweet, and rich. This is the kind of food you want for lunch! The boba milk tea here is a very generous portion for $ 3. I’m not sure why it’s a lighter yellow color instead of a brown color though, which was weird. Overall I would come back if there was more staff. They really need to refine their ordering process and overall operations.

This place makes a mean stinky tofu. I must say that the rating is skewed for this dish alone. For anyone who loves it, it isn’t to be missed here. The side of preserved veggies are a nice supplement as well. For $ 5.50 you get about 9 – 10 pieces of this fried goodness. It’s pretty filling. The 2 sauces that come with it are superb. One is your regular red chili seed sauce and the other is a soy sauce concoction. And if you don’t dig stinky tofu, this place makes it less pungent! They’ve gotten pricier in recent years but its still do-able. I really can’t speak too much for their other dishes though. You need to have an «acquired taste» for this kind of food so I’d advise to only bring people who are into this kinda stuff or are really accepting. I remember liking their shaved ice a lot once upon a time when it wasn’t as easily assessable as it is now.

Mmmm! This is a great place for some mien xian! This is as close as I’ve gotten to Taiwanese cuisine. I love coming here with my mom, who definitely knows her Taiwanese cuisine! The restaurant isn’t that appealing, but I guess that’s how you know it’s traditional — don’t let the appearance fool you. They have some pictures of famous Taiwanese people like Jay Chou who has been there. Awesome!

Yum Yum, causal Taiwanese food. Trying to give you the nightlife food in Taiwan except all in one place here. Its like a Taiwanese cafeteria. Can’t compare to Taiwan, but you got your oyster pancakes, thin noodle soup, and other dishes. Comfort food. Located at 99 Ranch Market, upstairs. Think it’s cash only?

This is by far… the only place that I go for the Taiwanese thin noodle. love it! The food are cheap ranging from $ 4 to $ 8. You can get 3-course meal at this place under $ 20. The food in general taste good.

You know you haven’t experience ShiMenDing in Taipei if you haven’t tried the house noodle soup– Ay Chung Flour Rice Noodle. And this branch somewhat lives up to the hype, keyword on the SOMEWHAT. Compared to the original OG Ay Chung Flour Rice Noodle in Taipei, this LA version lacks flavor. I don’t know if they made their own version to cater to Angelenos or something but this one is mediocre. The intestines don’t seem like they were cooked with the noodles & broth. It was lacking in flavor and the broth wasn’t really savory. The only plus to this version were the portions… I shared this with another person and we still had leftovers. We also ordered the Stinky Tofu and Oyster pancake, also two«okays» in my book. The stinky tofu tasted generic… not as good as some of the other Taiwanese joints in the SGV and the garlic soy sauce paste was watery. Definitely not as pungent in taste and smell… so major sadface. The Oyster pancake was okay… the oysters tasted like they were from a can. They were rubbery and the veggies were over cooked. When they opened a couple of years ago, this place was bumping. There were alot of people… as in, you had to wait in line for like 5 – 10 minutes to order and you had to be on the lookout for a table. They also played alot of Taiwanese pop music… you know, that Jay Chou and S.H.E. stuff. And the service was quick and the place was clean. But now, since the openings of other, probably better Taiwanese restaurants, it’s like a ghost town. We went in at around 6:30pm and there were only like 3 other people eating. The tables weren’t as clean as before… we were definitely scared to use their utensils. I’m only giving Ay Chung an «a-ok» because sometimes when I’m craving some Ay Chung Flour Rice Noodle(Taipei version), this version satisfies my craving. Barely.

I’ve been eating a lot of Taiwanese food lately and I was craving for some yummy fried squid. I went to this place a long time ago and didn’t like its noodle. I thought this time I would try their rice dishes. I was glad I did because the rice dishes were way better than their noodles. We ordered bamboo cup rice, crispy squid and fried crispy chicken. I got myself a table and a worker gave me napkins right away. We got our food fairly quick and the worker was so efficient and helpful. That same worker was always doing something; clearing tables or serving customers. My fried squid wasn’t the best but it did satisfy my craving. The bamboo cup rice was interesting and kinda good. It tasted like your typical sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf aka zongzi. The chicken was not bad either. 3.5 stars! Ay Chung Flour Rice Noodle is kinda yummylicious!

Great authentic taiwanese food The minced pork over rice is so rich and melts in your mouth. Lots of fatty bits which are a requirement for me. I was trying to order a certain Taiwnese street food style noodle with the chunks of gray meat sausage meat ball things — what is it called in english? but I got a fried fish noodle dish instead. The fried fish was deep fried with a very salty addictive batter, extremely fluffy and flaky and moist and even lighter than tempura. The soup for the noodle was perfect, tasted exactly like taiwan!

I love this place! It’s sort of weird that I start my reviews like that but I simply love this place… My favorite food(or style of food) in the whole wide world will definitely have to be Taiwan Night Market food. There is nothing on earth like it as the variety and the taste are absolutely incredible!(there WILL always be something for everyone. So what does that have to do with this place? Well, they serve many of those night market delicacies here! Granted a few more places in Monterey Park has similar food, this place is just easier for me to get to and it’s much more painless to enjoy my food due to huge parking lot and also lots of tables in the restaurant as they are served almost cafeteria style. So they will call out the number and you can step right up to get your food!!! (Other notables of Taiwanese Style food are Old country café and also Shiao Mei – hope I spelled that correctly, and they are both pretty good as well!) So what do I get here? Just one of my favorite staple of all night market food, «Meat Stew Noodle!» This huge bowl of awesomeness comes with many pieces of meat stews, bamboo shoots, sprouts, noodles and this totally awesome tasty broth!(I’m really sorry to say that even though Japanese Ramen are very well regarded, no noodles beats Taiwan-Style noodles in my personal biased opinion) If you like to enhance the flavor of this bowl of deliciousness like me just simple pour a bit of the black vinegar and white pepper available on the tabletop and you are good to go!(I love this flavor so I add quite a bit of vinegar and pepper!) I’m telling you, it will be one of the best noodles you ever had I promise… Don’t go for anything crazy if you are not adventurous just stick to this and you’ll be safe and happy! Noodles are always cooked just right and the flavor is simply fantastic! Next of course you have to try the Ay Chung Flour Rice Noodles… There is another place in Taiwan I absolute heart with my life!!!(It’s a childhood favorite up till now!) So this cannot really compare but nevertheless it is still deliciously tasty as it is what they were suppose to be famous for!(But I’m all over my meat stew noodle soup!) Other favorites of mine are Oyster omelet, deep fried chitlins, Taiwanese style popcorn chicken(Although I’m still hoping to find the best in southern cali because they are still not quite there yet… If anyone else knows a good popcorn chicken place please tell me ASAP!!!) The menu has quite a selection so no worries in finding something you like. Also, the prices are extremely reasonable for it’s size so you will feel even better after you are completely full!(Ranging from $ 2.99-$ 9.99) What do you expect? You are eating at a Taiwanese establishment! Good and cheap is our forte! With that said… I’m SOOOOO hungry right now and wanting some of that meat stew noodle…(too bad is like 30+ minutes for me without traffic) But if you are in the area, check them out and see what Taiwanese cuisine is all about!(If you end up even slightly liking this place, you are absolutely going to love the food in Taiwan! it’s 100x better!) P. S. They also got a drink/dessert menu available but I recommend just going downstairs to Tapioca Express or Nubi, everyone’s got their specialty so might as well go there for what they are good at. Anyone want to take a trip with me to Taiwan? LOL!

Came here a total of 6 times within the past 4 months. I love their stinky tofu! Everything they have is fantastic. I’m a Taiwanese American and when I order their food, it reminds me of Taiwan. I came to Ay Chung Flour Rice Noodle, currently, on the 11th of December and I love, love, love this place! The service is great. They will always ask if you’re going to order their Stinky Tofu because they are fantastic. Of course, it’s not the same as the ones you have in Taiwan, but ti’s damn close. You may be deterred to enter the place because when I first entered the venue I said«It looks like a cafeteria, I’m embarrassed to enter», but I was wrong. My mother told me to just give the place a try and I fell in LOVE. Since GoodTime Café closed in that area, this is the next place closest to Taiwan to me, and you should give it a try. You never know what’s good if you don’t give it a chance. I suggest, go for the Strong Odor Tofu aka Stinky Tofu. It will keep you coming back for more. If you order, go for the noodles! Décor: Like I said, it’s like a cafeteria with orange and yellow tables(like the ones you see when you’re in grade school). You practically serve yourself once they pass the food on to you over the counter. You get your own water at the back-right section of the dining area. At that same area, there, you will find extra bowls and take-out boxes too. Price: CHEAP! I say it’s a pretty cheap place to eat. Spent $ 14 for a bowl of filling noodles and Stinky Tofu. Yummy!!! The place takes CASH only, No CREDITCARDS or CHECKS. Bring CASH! Service: There wasn’t much service, since I did say that you practically serve yourself right when you get your food over the counter.

Oyster Pancakes, Minced Pork Rice, and all Noodle dishes ftw! I seldom get a chance to go to Taiwan, and when i go I remember the great dishes and eating at the night market. Stepping foot into this place brings me back there –Very authentic! I love it! Their stinky tofu, the Oyster pancakes, all their specialty noodles are delicious. I would recommend this place for a quick lunch or dinner. I must also stress adding their special hot sauce to everything you eat… Yumm!

everything… EVERYTHING here has that authentic flavor of home!!! i used to live closeby so i’d come here every 2 weeks at least… but now i moved away… i haven’t been to this place for maybe over a year!!! i especially like the flour rice noodle, tapan steak… when i went back this past weekend… i almost CRIED when i took the first bite!!! ok, maybe it’s a little over… must try their hot sauce to go w/your rice noodle… it’s really spicy and really good!!!(though i think they do have MSG in their stuff… i got real thirsty after eating there couple times…) WHY and WHY they closed down the location at rowland heights???

As close as I have gotten to the Taiwan Night market food stalls! I’ve tried their special noodles with intestines of some sort. I was introduced to this restaurant by one of my Taiwanese friends that has a hankering that this taste will only satisfy! It’s an acquired taste, I know. It’s not for everyone! It’s real thick and gooey, if you are not into it by now, you know, maybe it’s not for you! Next, it’s real greasy and has parts of the animal, maybe better left unsaid! Did I mention that it’s thick and gooey, well, I added that for extra measure, cuz once saying it doesn’t even begin to describe it! Apparently, these noodles are the claim to fame here! I have tried them and you better be prepared for the Fahrenheit to rise in your body! If you are a guy, like me, maybe this is the closest you will ever get to «Hot Flashes!» You will be sweating like a pig after eating this, did I say pig? Well, it’s got parts of one in there! ^_^ On the last couple of times, that I have been here, I have tried the Hot Plate Chicken, pretty good for the money — Sizzling Hot Plate with a pretty boneless chicken steak, with noodles, egg, and veggies! Today, I had the Pork Chop Noodle Soup, substituted the Crispy Chicken instead. Cuz, I prefer the Soup Noodles. They said no prob! Was pretty decent. You get some grub here for a good price, it’s not much to see, but you have some lunch tables inside of this shop in the San Gabriel Mall, formerly Focus Plaza on the 2nd Floor, kinda above the Sanrio shop. It can get crowded around the Lunch or Dinner rush!

Omg you people in San Gabriel take this place for granted!!! Their Chitterlings & Oyster Thin Noodle is freaking good and their pork chop over rice *dieeeee*. The first time I went to Ay Chung I thought it was an oversized Chinese«fast food» type place. After I got my food I wanted to keep going and going and going! You know, like the energizer bunny but me with food. We were in San Gabriel for 3 days and whenever I was asked what I wanted, I wanted Ay Chung!!! Their pork chop over rice is seriously one of the top places I’ve had it. The intestine noodle soup makes me shove large spoonfuls into my mouth while it’s still piping hot– even on hot days! I do not care how much I sweat while eating it, it is so good. I just want that stuff in my stomach! How I crave for you while I am in Northern California :(Wao xiang ni!

This review is based solely on the one bowl of noodles I ordered here. And that was a disaster. Upon entering this McDonald’s cafeteria looking place, I ordered a cuttlefish noodle soup and thought the noodles were cooked perfectly fine! The fish, on the other hand, had an odd consistency and a strange chewy texture. I had expected a broth-like soup, and instead received a thick, viscous, and over-salted soup, dark brown and spotted with intense amounts of oil and who knows what. Quite unhappy. When I strained my noodles, bamboo shoots, and strands of bean sprouts(and gave away the fish), it didn’t taste too bad at all. But it would be pushing it to give this place any more than two stars at the moment. **I was told that cuttlefish is more related to octopuses and squids. Whoops!

Great value for A LOT of food. The place is set up like a food court essentially – it’s «fast food» Chinese-style. Still, the food was very fresh and all were generous portions. My friend and I were starving beforehand and we were so glad we came to Ay Chung for some tasty noodles. Ay Chung also has a large selection of drinks, including Tapioca and Slush. Mmm mmm! When I go back down south, I’ll be sure to stop by Ay Chung again. =)
