I was curious about this place because they would be serving dishes that the previous restaurant Lang Chay in the same location did not. Banh xeo and banh khot. I ordered banh xeo dac biet which is supposed to have veg shrimp, meat, onions, tofu and bean sprouts. They brought out banh xeo nam which only had mushrooms, tofu and bean sprouts — very plain, boring and something which I DIDNOTWANTORORDER. At first the waiter said it was a mistake and he’d bring out the right dish. Later he came back and said the restaurant wasnt making banh xeo dac biet anymore because people were allergic to the MSG in the veg shrimp. Strange. There are plenty of other veg meat substitutes, and they could easily find veg shrimp without MSG. Besides that, they should not have changed my order without telling me. They’re a new restaurant. Why would they have an item on the menu that they don’t serve? What’s more, the banh xeo dough wasn’t cooked right. The outside edges were thin, dry and falling apart. The banh khot took a long time to come out and was just okay. The bo luc lac was also just so-so. The tables were too crowded to each other and it was uncomfortable getting around. The floors were dirty. In conclusion, Green Lotus has an interesting menu, but the prices are high and it doesn’t seem to be run by experienced restaurateurs. There are so many other Asian and Vietnamese veg options in the area, that there’s no reason to waste my money to be disappointed at this one. Lang Chay moved to Vietnam Town, renamed themselves Mint and Basil, raised their prices and reduced their portion sizes. :(But they still cook a lot better than Green Lotus and I’d go there instead.
