Ma M is upset because she perceives being overcharged for her deck repair. In truth the deck was in worse condition than could be ascertained without first tearing it apart. She was insistent on having it repaired before a family gathering that was imminent. She was unreachable for discussion and unavailable when extra discovered damage was ascertained. All responsible contractors have terms and conditions dealing with possible unforseen problems that the contractor can not be reasonably known for certain beforehand. If she would read the proposal we address that possibility. She knew the deck was bad and my recommendation was to completely replace but that was out of the question both time wise and expense wise. We made effort to inform and advise but knowing her time crunch went ahead and made the deck repair so it was safe and usable. It is a shame that almost a year would go by before she would make such a review. She never complained to me regarding the workmanship. Also, she stated that her long time plans were to remove deck and replace with concrete to match part of patio already installed. We did our best to try and meet her needs but apparently her expectation level did not match her monetary capacity. We are sorry she feels put upon but we made an honest effort to please and if she would take a second look maybe she will realize that and feel differently.

If you don’t like UNPLEASANTSURPRISES — DONOTUSERGC Builders for your home projects!!! Rick Clement’s(owner of RGC Builders) quoted us $ 1475.00($ 475/material and ~$ 1000/labor) to replace a corner of our deck((3ft x 3ft) due to dry rot and replace a fascia board(1×8). We told him that his quote was on the high side, but decided to go with him because we were constrained by time. He said that the quote might be less if he could reuse some of the planks. He put the fascia board in, there was a 2 — 2 ½ inch gap at the bottom between the lower deck. It looked tacky with the gap so we asked him to replace the board with a 1×10 board instead. He said that the board would be expensive to replace, which was fine with us since it was a front facing board. He did end up reusing some of the original boards to repair the corner. The repair took about 2 days to complete and the final invoice came to be $ 2555(58% increase)!!! Unfortunately, my daughter paid him with cash while i was out on an errand and he wanted payment before he left. Needless to say — i almost had a heart attack when my daughter told me the amount when I got home later that day. I called Rick back to let him know that we must’ve had miscommunication and my daughter had mistakenly give him $ 1000 more than his quote. He told me that it was not a mistake, that the damage was more extensive than his initial inspection and that 1×10 fascia board WASEXPENSIVE… He wished that he could give us back some of the money — but unfortunately, like everyone else. he got bills to pay. Never once during the 2 days that i was home did Rick ever mention the extensive damage or the extra work. His last schpiel before we hung was .he would do a bathroom for $ 10K. I had to ask him — how did he come up with that quote without having seen my bathroom!!! I told him that i couldn’t afford him or another heart attack. Rick did okay work — but open communication and set proper expectations were not his forte. I wouldn’t use him or recommend him to anyone.
