Seemed like a cute place on our first visit. However, the second visit left us scratching our heads– it seemed like it was the first day on the job for all the staff. It was complete chaos, people were waiting in excess of 1 hour for their breakfasts and the inept waiter kept screwing up all the orders. The place was full too, and several couples got up and left while we were there. My husband was served an omelet that was inexplicably raw and burned at the same time, as well as a mound of hash browns that were still partly frozen. And I’m pretty sure there’s no such thing as «blackened» pancakes. If that wasn’t enough, they overcharged us when they brought the bill! We vowed never to return. If you love aggravation and food poisoning you’re probably sad Joplin’s Café is closed. Otherwise the world is better off without this place.

joplins had the best fried chicken ever around the east bay. trust me ive gone to nellies, home of chicken and waffles, merritt bakery, and others and nothing else compares! u get to choose 3 sides with your plate, plus it comes with corn bread. it really was some down to earth home cookin soul food, where every bite tasted like heaven. lol the best part was that it was inexpensive. too bad it closed down=(

Joplin’s in now CLOSED. There is another place in the same spot called Mom’s Soulfood Café, I think. Haven’t been there yet, but I hear the food is good.

Been there twice. Once for lunch, had a burger, was just OK. Other time for breakfast, the hostess had to leave, and we waited forever to get our food. The guy felt really bad and didn’t charge us, but I’m having a hard time going back. They were nice and all, and I might give it another try… I just don’t know when.

I agree with the other Unilocalers who say a new restuarant around here is worth our support! I went for dinner last night. This place is all about the food. An entrée and three veggies for $ 9. I had smothered chicken, mashed potatoes, yams, and black eyed peas. Everything was delicious. Not healthy, but delicious. I would considered going back and just ordering the veggies. They are very typical soul/southern style — cooked with a lot of fat to make them extra tasty!

In this neighborhood, a new restaurant is a great cause for celebration. Seriously, people. Give your support to this restaurant! The breakfast was great. I’ll be back, and bringing friends. 4 stars instead of 5 for a few reasons: serving margarine instead of butter, non-dairy creamer instead of milk or cream, and having exciting items on the menu that they don’t actually intend to serve. Apparently the folks who run this place are actually related to Scott Joplin, and there is Joplin-related memorabilia everywhere. Fat-friendly rating: 4 stars. Comfy enough.

WOW! This place is insanely authentic soul food. During breakfast, there was a church service going on. No, really, a full on ‘Amen’, ‘Praise Jesus’ prayer service going on. And even though the atheist in me was as uncomfortable as a stoned teenager having dinner with his parents, it was still kind of fun. And the food? Let’s just say that while it was one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had, unless I want to die in less than a year, I won’t come back more than once a month. Chicken fried steak with gravy, hashbrowns and eggs. Damn it was good, but swimming in more bacon fat than I’ve ever seen. I totally recommend this place, but only if you love abusing your cardiovascular system as much as I do.
