I’m from out of town and wanted breakfast food for lunch. There was no wait for my party of 4, but service was terrible. We waited at least 30 minutes for our meals to come out. Our plates came out about 3 minutes apart from each other, and the food was extremely mediocre. I will not be returning here next time I’m in town.

They have grits. If a place serves breakfast but not grits, keep driving. Popped in here for breakfast and it was very good. A nice selection of breakfast options, fresh squeezed juice and good service. If you’re in town on a visit, skip the IHOP and chain places, visit a place like this on the square.

First and last time dining here. Thought I would give this place a try but I am so disgusted. While trying to eat, we had about 5 flies around us, and we sat inside. The dinner salad was probably the worst part of the lettuce because it was mostly white and yellow. My first order was burnt(meatloaf) and dry so I ordered something different, my second plate was worse. I felt bad so I ate so of it. I found it weird that the waitress said that the meatloaf was not homemade, but prepackaged! I thought it would be a cute place to eat but it slowly turned into a nightmare.

Food is amazing. People are amazing here. Went on a busy day but was satisfied by how they kept up making sure we had our cups refilled and made sure everything was okay. Definitely recommend other and we’ll be back shortly

This place is very clean and is everything you would expect from a café. The staff is kind and friendly, even under pressure. The food however took a very long time to come out, once it did arrive it was cold. Everything was well cooked, and tasted as expected, the only thing was that the food was cold. Also, I never got my complete order(tortillas never came in). Maybe they are understaffed? I can’t stress enough how kind the workers are.

Both times i’ve been here they were out of what i wanted so i had to settle. The breakfast burrito is huge and cheap but it’s 95% egg with a little bit of bacon. Not terrible but i would pick somewhere else

The waitresses are charming and the owners are good people. More than once, I’ve seen them send out food for homeless people, which is charitable. This place could be a swanky bistro, but it’s more like a diner. It’s just a place to go when you’re all grungy from working outside on a hot summer day. The food is… meh. None of the food is standout, and the menu hasn’t changed in ten years — except for the prices! The soups frequently come from a can. The café needs to be updated and they need a signature dish. Also, the roof leaks when it rains, so be prepared to not sit along the wall during a downpour. I hate to write a bad review, especially for nice people. Improve the food, and I’ll be back.

The banana pudding looked so bad I didn’t even taste it. It went straight into the trash. I ordered it to go and when I got to work 5 minutes later, I opened the container and the bananas were black and the pudding was a brown color. It looked disgusting. I won’t be eating there anymore. I can open up a can of potato soup and it taste better than their«homemade» potato soup.

Heard great things about this place. Was disappointed. Stopped about 1pm ordered a BLT and Club sandwich. Took almost 40 minutes to get these sandwiches! The food was really good, just disappointed in the wait for deli sandwiches.

I wanted to like this place… Cool location… Breakfast all day… but… The confusion starts when you walk in… No host, no sign… Do you sit anywhere… Find someone? Who knows… Well, you sit down… Sort of… You better make sure you get the attention of a staff member… Or like us… You will wait for 15 min before even being greeted… But I can imagine how we got missed… A table of 7… Sitting in the center table… Near the front door… Twin toddlers… Yeah, we were invisible Once we finally got someone’s attention… It didn’t get much better, but 20 min later… We got to order! Well maybe the food is good… We see others getting food… Eating food… Leaving… 20 min pass… 30 min pass… 45 min pass… Thinking it odd that people who got there after us have eaten and left… I flag down a waitress(was never sure who ours was) and she disappeared in the back… Sending someone else to tell us they were putting out plates on trays and it will be right out… man, we must have been in store for one epic tray… As 20 more minutes pass and still no food… My friend goes to ask this time… Same response.,. It’s being put on a tray… Finally! The food arrives! 75 min after we sat down! This is going to be amazing! Not so much. It was okay… Not bad… Not great… But edible… Some of the meat in my gyro salad was burned… My daughters roll was a rock… But overall… Okay No apologies for the delay… No real service to speak of… Overall I give it a Meh.

It really depends on what you order here! Several things on the menu are bad, like the biscuits and gravy. I suggest the breakfast burrito, it is huge! Café on the Square has a great atmosphere and you are greeted with a smile.

Ive gone three times and I’ve really wanted to like this place, but it’s absolutely terrible. My food was cold twice. The salmon was the worst I’ve ever had. The waitress was late and rude. I won’t be going here again. Stay away.

I really like their location and ambiance. I ordered the ham and cheese omelette which was just ok but my brothers breakfast burrito was awesome. Also the bacon was crisp as was hash browns. Beautiful view of the Square and place is busy and food takes a bit but for sure I would recommend

Café on Square is so cute! Ambiance and Service: It’s a very rustic restaurant! I think they could update it a little because it’s not that pretty but it’s nice. The service was great. We were sat immediately and we had our orders taken immediately. Food and Drinks: The mimosas were great very pulpy just like I like it. I had the huevos rancheros which was absolutely delicious. It was everything I needed that morning.

We stopped by here for Mother’s day brunch, really lunch at this point. The Root Cellar had an hour wait so we just moseyed on down to the Café. We were seated right away. This place is old. From what I hear, it’s been here a while. I think everything is just average. It wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t great either. Simple and quick. I got the chicken delgado(?), it was chicken with some stir fried vegetables. The chicken was a bit bland. Mashed potatoes were good. With the food options in San Marcos, I see myself coming back here every once in a while. It’s not a place that I would drive to San Marcos specifically for it. It’s more of a convenient spot when one needs to be fed.

This is a favorite spot for the locals but not my favorite place in San Marcos. It’s cool because the building has historical significance and has been there since the beginning of the city. And there’s interesting pictures of old San Marcos on the walls. One thing they do that you don’t find much these days, is they have a smoking section in the back. So if you’re a smoker feel free to have a puff with your coffee. But if your not, this may take away your appetite a bit. I’ve been twice and ordered the breakfast quesadillas both times but I wasn’t really impressed. The eggs tasted like they were cooked with a pound of butter and the guacamole was kind of brown. If you decide to go, my companion kind of liked the Migas. I wouldn’t really recommend this unless you want to have a cool view of the courthouse.

I’m very fond of this place. Great pie and good hot tea. They have some pretty righteous breakfast burritos and tacos. They also happen to have awards for their homemade salsa. It’s ok. Overall the owner is the nicest guy and the waitresses are nice. The wait sucks, it really does. But overall always dependable quality of food. Oh and Once when a waitress opened the freezer to get pie I saw a hand. A human hand.

We have been coming here for about a year and enjoyed it. We like the location and the down-home-diner feel. The food is good but not above average. It was our go to spot for mornings we wanted breakfast and didn’t want to cook. Then, all of the sudden, the prices were jacked up on us. I don’t know if it’s in my head but it seems like the food quality went down. I’d rather drive to Austin or New Braunfels for phenomenal diner food at affordable prices and spend the extra cash on gas. We won’t be coming back.

Between semesters, when all the students are home for the holidays, lunch time at the restaurants around campus is a little slow. I walked up to Café on the Square thinking I would be one of five or ten people there, but I was shocked to see a packed house. This is one of the places that locals love. It’s also one of the only places on the square to grab an early breakfast. They open at 7:00AM, and breakfast is served all day. The menu has a lot of Mexican dishes like migas, huevos rancheros, and breakfast tacos in addition to traditional American food. I especially love their breakfast quesadilla(bacon, egg, cheese and pico), because it’s exactly like a breakfast taco except the ingredients don’t fall out! I have never been disappointed with their breakfast, but I thought I should sample some lunch and dinner options this time around. I wanted something warm, and they were already out of tortilla soup at one o’clock, so I decided to branch out and try something new: caldo. Caldo is the spanish word for soup, and it’s made with vegetables, chicken or beef, and rice. They used dark meat chicken and served it with a lime wedge. It was warm and flavorful and perfect on a chilly day. Then came my taco salad. Really, it was a tortilla shell with lots of fajita chicken, a little cheese and guacamole, and about three shreds of iceberg lettuce. Come on y’all, this is basically nachos. Not that I’m complaining. The chicken was hot and crispy and delicious. The shell was glistening like it had just emerged from the fryer. And it was served with some mildly spicy hot sauce that I loved. Café on the Square is what it sounds like: a simple, home-cooked, pie-serving establishment complete with old school milkshake mixers. This one has quite an array of Mexican dishes. The healthy selections are few and far between, but I can definitely recommend it for a hearty breakfast at any time of the day!
