Grading on a curve for being a corporate cafeteria. Bön Appetit makes an effort to offer good food at above-average prices, yet still many good-value options.

I came here the other day with my co-worker for lunch. It was past 1:30pm so pretty much everything was shut down. My only option was the stir fry. So I had the chicken stir fry with the coconut curry sauce over brown rice. The Good: Big portions. Enough for 2 people. The Bad: It is deserted at 1:30pm So overall, ok. I would go back to try something else I think, and I probably will.

This place has great potential, but was strangely empty at 1PM. Could it be that people know that there are many other better places to eat? I ordered a Personal sized ham & pineapple pizza(yeah OK, I know the jokes about«Hawaiian Pizzas» but it was the only pizza left at that time). The person behind the counter had lots of time and I did not want to rush her, so she threw it in this rather anemic-looking fired pizza oven. And when she said it was done, I took her word for it and she offered to slice it up for me. Only after that did I see how underdone the crust and pizza was. Doughy, barely seared, and with some kind of orange-ish sauce that was supposed to have passed for marinara, but didn’t. It was mostly edible and filling but was a non-pizza wannabe at best. On the other hand I had a good chunky New England clam chowder that would have been excellent, had it tasted more like clam chowder and less like a vegetarian version of the same. I think I would try some of the other lunch choices in the area before I choose this again.

Having sampled every one of the Bön Apetite Cafés at Oracle, I had high hopes for this location since it’s right across the street from my new work. But there’s something a little off about this location. Sure, they have a grill where they make the same grilled chicken sandwiches, the specials are similar, they’ve got salad and pizza and cold drinks, too. It took me a while to put my finger on it. The cafeteria even during peak hours isn’t a busy. The dining area is so clean and quiet it’s almost clinically sterile. And the food, sometimes it’s a little bland, sometimes over cooked. I just isn’t prepared with passion. And then I figured it out. Everything is just sad. Sad Café. That’s what I call it now. It’ll run you around eight bucks for lunch, depending on what you order. And although its’ got the Bön Appetit name, the cuisine certainly lacks that quality that thing called love. I’ll still come here when I have time and appetite for a hot lunch. Even if it’s a little depressing.

Good blended mocha made with Pete’s coffee and Pete’s chocolate. Iced mocha is inconsistent — sometimes too much chocolate, sometimes the chocolate is not melted with the espresso before it’s stirred in. BREKFAST: Good made to order breakfast. They sell odwalla and good pasties too. LUNCH: Food is okay. The french fries are good. The salad bar and soup bar looks good. The have a grill where they cook to order. The pizza is a bit thick and a bit cold. I saw mention of some organic food in the Thanksgiving dinner meal that they were offering for people who didn’t want to cook their own dinner. I haven’t seen any mention of fair trade coffee or fair trade mocha. Service is quick enough with a slightly indifferent attitude.
