Okay, so after I described my bad experience with this dentist, I got a response from this office immediately apologizing for what happened. Well I was surprised that they saw my review right away. Then a few days later I received an email from Unilocal telling me that my review was removed because I ‘did not provide too much details or tips about this business’. I wrote about 200 words about this business, not detailed enough? I wondered why this dentist had such a high review but horrible service, well this might have explained why.
Think my old review wasn’t detailed enough? Okay here is how I revised it and made it detailed with tips: Couldn’t imagine how this dentist got 5 stars. I went to this clinic a year ago to do teeth cleaning after I did research on Unilocal.The lady who did cleaning for me was very nice and did a good. But the Dr Wu looked at my X-​Ray pictures and told me I needed to do lots of work since my teeth condition was ‘very bad’. The lady sitting next to the front desk, I think her name was Maria or something, she said they could not give me any discount. But right after I told them it was too expensive and left she called me and told me they were able to gave me 50% off my part but they had to charge the max from my dental insurance. So I decided to do a few of them but not all. I had a root canal, a crown, and after that I had 3 fillings. Those cost me tons of money but I thought I did the right thing because Dr wu took care of my teeth. But no. The 6 months after that I had been miserable. I had to go back as emergency because the one I did root canal with caused lots of pain (and they charged emergency fee even it was their fault). And the other morning when I woke up I found the crown Dr Wu put on for me fell off and I almost swallowed it! This time I decided to go to another dentist. After the exam the dentist told me what Dr Wu did for me ‘was very aggressive and unnecessary’. I had to spend another huge amount of money to repair them. It was the worst experience ever!
So tip No.1, it’s ok to do cleaning here. The lady knows what she is doing.
Tip No.2, if you really want the 50% off, just walk away, they will call you.
Tip No.3, do not do big teeth work with Dr Wu. You have 50% to fail your teeth!
Tip No.4, always get the second opinion!
If Unilocal removes my review again I am going to fight it until everybody sees my review and knows the truth about this dentist!

Dr Wu is amazing. I got four of my teeth filled and he is good at giving a completely pain-​free experience. I was very scared initially but he told me what he was doing and continued to check on me throughout the process. I highly receommend him!

Super friendly and knowledgable staff. Had my teeth cleaned by Sara, and she did a great job. She was extremely nice and personable, and made an otherwise dull/​dreadful experience a good one with fun conversation. Dr. Wu was also very nice, and answered any questions I had clearly and thoroughly. Absolutely recommend going here!

Dr. Wu is a very professional dentist, thoroughly explains all procedures and do his work with high quality. He always a cheerful and enthusiastic, make me happy to visit the dentist (which was not the case for me previously).
I really enjoy his services. Wisdom teeth extraction was not that bad as I heard from my friends, even manage to sing later that night (with Vicodin help). Price range is a reasonable and for Stanford student like me (who’s insurance does not include dental one) is a good choice, he also gives quite a discount for students. My friends (who recommended him to me) also love him. Highly recommend!

Definitely the best dental care I have ever been to. Staff there are professional and very kind. Dr. Wu’s skill is the best, what’s more, he is very professional and patient with me in explaining what’s going on, how and why the procedure is done. His professional practice not only gives me lots of comfort when visiting, but also helps me protect my teeth going forward. I recommend the clinic without any reservation to my all friends around!

10 stars. What fantastic staff and a fantastic dental. I can’t recommend them enough. I’ve had maybe five dentists in my life, and never liked any of them. The hygienists were always rough and unapologetic, and the dentists gave me guilt trips every time I went in. I’ve NEVER had a cavity, but one dentist told me at 15 «you’ll be lucky to have any teeth at 30.» Well I’m 28 and have all my straight white teeth and still no cavities, thank you very much!
But back to the Wu office. The hygienist Sara was really friendly and gave me the best, most thorough, least painful cleaning I’ve ever had. Seriously, I was almost falling asleep during the cleaning, in stark contrast to gripping the chair arm rests for dear life, like I usually do! Doctor Wu came in after the cleaning to chat about my teeth, discussed some possible future problems but essentially said «If your teeth aren’t hurting you, we’ll leave them alone for now.» He gave me a lot of good information and tips for maintaining my teeth, answered all my questions, shook my hand, and sent me on my way.
If only I’d found them sooner! Thanks so much guys, see you in 6 months!

I have been seeing dr. Wu for about 3 years and have been very satisfied.

I am a new client at Dr. Wu’s office and I was very impressed with Dr. Wu and his staff. Dr. Wu took the time to examine me and walk me through what he was looking for in my x rays. Sarah, the hygienist who helped me was very friendly and did a wonderful job. She was very knowledgable and helped answer all the questions I had about dental hygiene. I was happy with the experience here and is looking to making Dr. Wu my permanent dentist.

I highly recommend Dr. Wu. I’ve been coming to his office for over 2 years and have not had a bad experience.

Okay, so I’ve had over 10 dentists in my lifetime (4 in the Bay Area) as I have moved around quite a bit. Dr. Wu is by far the best dentist that I have ever had.
He will spend as much time as you want to talk about any issues. He will never rush you, and he will explain everything in a clear manner.
The dental assistants here are much better too. They actually spend a decent amount of time cleaning your teeth. I’ve had plenty of bad experiences where dental assistants are rushed, not thorough and want to get you out as soon as possible.
Also, what i like is that they file for pre-​authorization (if you need additional dental work) and determine all your dental benefits before you do any procedures. So you know exactly what you’re paying.
Everybody here is pleasant and it doesn’t feel like a factory where they’re just out to get your money. Dr. Wu runs a very honest practice.
I live in San Francisco and I drive down here specifically to get my dental cleaning done here. You wouldn’t believe how hard it is to find a good dentist in the Bay Area. I highly recommend this dentist.

What an amazing dentist is John Wu! Came here after many bad experiences with dentists wanting to push a lot of work on me, almost to the point of bullying.
Not here. Dr. Wu will simply do the visit, voice his concerns and then ask «is this or that bothering you?» and guess what, he will actually listen to his patients. His attitude is if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
We have even had him do work outside of insurance on a friend visiting from abroad, he gave her all her options, did a wonderful job and ended up charging very little. Kudos to you, Dr. Wu!

Great dentist. Have been a client for about 4 years. Office goes above and beyond consistently. I don’t have to worry about anything but showing up and asking (or calling later) if I have any questions. Like David Sedaris, I enjoy going to the dentist since coming to Dr. Wu. I can’t imagine the quality being better.

So, the dental assistant who was assisting this time was efficient and I was happy with her skill, care, and attention to detail. Plus, she was friendly. I think her name was Julia. One more positive visit like this and I will be upping my rating to 5 stars!

I was a hot mess when I cracked my wisdom tooth and when I went to see Dr. Wu he suggested I should take them all out. Today, was my extraction day and I was completely happy I did it. He and his assistant were absolutely wonderful. I think I found the kindest dentist ever. I was so nervous, but he made sure he wasn’t causing any pain. He even thanked me for letting him know I do not numb easily. I can not believe it took me this long to find a dentist like him.

Dr. Wu and his entire dental staff is just amazing. I had all four of my wisdom teeth extracted and they did it effortlessly and my recovery was painless (as much as possible) and fast. Dr. Wu and his entire crew are caring, nice and professional. Their service is also extremely reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend him to anyone else looking for a good dental practitioner.

Dr. Wu is a great dentist, but what I really appreciate is that he doesn’t recommend any expensive procedures when there is a less expensive alternative treatment that could be tried first. I actually recall telling him that I would be happy to get seals on my teeth, just so that I wouldn’t have to deal with any potential toothaches in the future, but he insisted that we try a prescription fluoride paste first. It worked!

Dr Wu is probably the best dentist I have ever gotten.
Here’s why:
— he explains things clearly and slowly then asks you if that makes sense and you understand it. He will re-​explain if necessary.
— he is pretty conservative with doing stuff. He often says «Well, if its not bothering you, we probably don’t need to do any work on that. If it starts bothering you, maybe we can do something about it later.» I guess he doesn’t have this fear that you’re gonna go do the big expensive stuff at another dentist, like a lot of other dentists seem to.
— he’s actually the only dentist who hasn’t «strongly recommended» removing my wisdom teeth. Ironically, having had him as my dentist the past year or so, the space between one of my wisdom teeth and the prior teeth, started bleeding when I’d floss it. Even when I was telling him about this, he said «it actually looks OK, you might not need to remove the wisdom teeth» and I agreed that it wasn’t insanely bad, but that being 28 years old and actually having dental insurance right now, its probably a good idea to just do it, especially since I trusted Dr Wu quite a bit.
— I got my wisdom teeth pulled out yesterday, and am feeling quite well today. I’m almost like «Uhh…what is everyone talking about, complaining about this surgery? No big deal.» I got kinda freaked out during part of the removal (I know… big tough guy Tom, getting scared…) and Dr Wu was pretty good at keeping me reassured and stopped for however long I needed to get sane again.
So yeah. If you’re in San Mateo, or you can get to San Mateo, Dr Wu is your go to guy. Won’t recommend stuff you don’t need, won’t overcharge you, and will actually do a good job as well.

OK. I have to agree with these reviewers.
I have visited many dentists in the US and abroad, and am happy to report that Dr. Wu is one of the best!

I love Dr. Wu. I started going to him when he was part of a dental practice in Palo Alto, and now he has his own practice in San Mateo. His new location is much closer to me, but I was willing to travel, because he’s so great. His office is in a very convenient location, near El Camino Real and Hwy 92. His office hours are also very convenient, and I never have a problem getting an appointment at a time that works for me. He’s one of the preferred providers for my dental insurance, which is fantastic, because my company changed providers not too long ago and I figured I’d have to pay extra so I could stay with him.
Dr. Wu and everyone in his office are so nice. I also appreciate that he’s a dentist who doesn’t scold you or make you feel bad about maybe not flossing as much as you should or having longer times in between appointments as you should. Before I started seeing him, it had been over 6 years since I had been to the dentist, and I had worked up something of a phobia… but here I am, still cavity free, with healthy teeth and a white smile to boot. Thanks Dr. Wu!

I’m still in the office waiting for my mom to finish up. My first appointment went quite smooth today. They’re efficient and Dr. Wu is very caring and knowledgeable. The older Filipino lady at the front desk reminds me of my grandma. So sweet! The younger lady, Nueva, I think (or something like that) is nice as well but when she flosses it hurts! The again, I’m probably not used to it because I never floss. Haha! Also when I first arrived, I was a little turned off by the lack of a nice ambiance, but the dental care is more important, in my opinion. He also gave me a lot of free goodies to help me with my teeth care, including a gum massager! :)
Overall, I definitely recommend Dr. Wu!
