My family and me look forward to these films every year. We travel from AZ in July to SB and this is one of our favorite things to do there. The setting is beautiful and the people are always happy and kind. Truth be told, for us the movie doesn’t even need to be that great and we still have a blast. The sound is sometimes hard to hear if you are near the back or if the film is from an older era. Still, we have fun and make a picnic out of it. The past few years, there have even been some food trucks there to add some yum to the festive feel. We love the cool summer nights under the stars at the courthouse, and we are very thankful for the SB Arts and Lectures team and all the sponsors that make it happen.

One star off because of this giant bush that should be trimmed/pulled back but… WHAT A FUNNIGHT! tons and tons of people, picnicking, napping, drinking, snacking and overall enjoying the sunken gardens in downtown Santa Barbara. Brought 3 bottles of wine and some beer and snacks and some friends and had a great time! The movie series this 2013 summer is Alfred Hitchcock, so we got to watch Psycho! So good! Highly recommend. This is FREE!

Part of the UCSB Arts & Lectures series, the summer movie nights at the Santa Barbara Courthouse’s Sunken Gardens are a great way to spend a Friday night. Kick back on your blanket or LOWBACK(come on folks, low means your but is almost on the ground) chairs, bring a pic-nick and wine to share with friends and enjoy a movie. The sound and video quality is better than you would expect as it’s easy to hear throughout the grounds. The giant, inflatable screen is easy to see when you have a clear, line of sight. MOre difficult when people bring chairs and insist on sitting near the front. Movies start a little after the scheduled 8:30 call followed by anouncments and sponsor advertisements. You will want to arrive no later than 8 for a spot of grass in the back or closer to 7 to pick your land. Not that I want you to force me out of a good spot but order up some pizza, bring a few bottles of wine and plan to spend the evening from 7 – 11. You will enjoy yourself. What about the movies? Maybe not the best place to see a film for the first time as the concentration level is low. Don’t let that disuade you. It’s all worth it. Just don’t drink too much and expect an easy trip to the 3 portable toilets. It can take awhile. If you do no other free event this summer, make it to a movie night under the stars. It’s well worth it. Maybe I’ll see you around. There’s always a great spread to be had. Bring your well behaved dogs but leave the kids behind. See you at the movies
