Nice moderately sized gallery mostly focused on American painters and sculptors who worked between 1850 and 1950. As with most galleries, I wish I could have seen more of their collection as I’m sure they had much more than was displayed. Stop in for a quick walk through and go through the back into the gorgeous courtyard for lunch at Arts & Letters Café. I didn’t get to eat there this time but it smelled really good!

Lovely gallery with an eclectic collection of artists. We came here for a visit during Santa Barbara’s First Thursday and enjoyed paintings by Meredith Brooks Abbott and I discovered one of my new favorites, Leon Dabo and his hauntingly beautiful pieces. Very much looking forward to a visit during our next First Thursday.

«Sullivan Goss — An American Gallery» sounds like a boring documentary, but it is in fact a cute, interesting art gallery. It doesn’t take a long time to visit — unless of course you’re feeling spendy — but it’s a pleasant stop in a beautiful walkable part of Santa Barbara. The art is modern, and on my visit I enjoyed a nice display of geometric art in front and some cool optical illusion art in a room with a giant bead curtain in the back. The middle room held more picturesque art, paintings with people and scenes of bustling cities. That’s as descriptive as I can wax as I am no art critic, but Sullivan Goss is definitely worth a look if you’re in the mood for a quick diversion.

I love perusing their exhibits of modern American artists. The gallery provides for a pleasant walk-by experience. Santa Barbara is one of my favorite towns to stroll through because it always seems to be sunny when I arrive. Sometimes I have to duck out of the solar beneficence and Sullivan Goss gives me an opportunity to enrich my culture while doing so. I may not ever afford to purchase a work from their walls, but I am often tempted.

This is a very sophisticated and charming art gallery. There are varied styles of art, ranging from impressionist to postmodern to folkish, and they have a small book selection as well. I stumbled upon it on my way to the Arts and Letters Café.(One must walk through the gallery to get to the café — see my review) I found all the pieces to be thought provoking, whether I cared for the art or not. My favorite item, hands down, was a metal sculpture of a rhino the size of a terrier.(I have a friend who collects rhinos, and he would just love this) The gallery is about half a block up from State Street. If you’re in the Santa Barbara area, I highly recommend checking it out and the café.
