Walking up Canyon Road in Santa Fe… you have an unfathomable amount of galleries to enjoy. Chalk Farm is my favorite. If you love fantasy and are enticed by the absurd and whimsical then this is a great spot to check out. They have a ton of work by Alan Lee(Lord of The Rings), Vladimir Kush and some other artists who are very Christiansen-esque. Check out the wood table with working gears under the glass top; super cool. I picked up a book of various pieces by Vladimir Kush and chatted with the manager/owner for a bit about it and his work. She was pleasant and very knowledgeable. It’s apparent that she is an art lover not just someone trying to cash in on the Canyon Road tourist draw. The prices here were great; at least in my opinion. I fully understand that the price for art is often just a matter of what a particular person wants to or will pay for it but I often find prices to be ridiculous at many galleries. I found the prices here to be reasonable and at no point did I view a piece, see the price and then have a mini heart attack… I save my mini heart attacks for after cupcake buffets. On a road running rampant with beautiful art, imaginative sculptures and, often times, the mediocre Chalk Farm stands out as my must stop place to visit for beautifully crafted fantasy worlds and imagery. I’m a huge fan!

My first time in Santa Fe, first time on Canyon road… I walk into the Chalk Farm Gallery first because I know Gil Bruvel and his wife and love his work. I was very much enjoying the gallery and the high quality fantasy art. I made the mistake of asking a few questions to the bitchy woman behind the counter… don’t bother asking her anything, she is great at belittling you and treating you like you are of no interest to her. I guess I didn’t look rich enough to be in there. …really ruined my great mood and tainted my whole visit to Canyon road. So you own a gallery… without the artists you are just another rich fake woman with some money. You have no idea who is visiting your gallery or who they know. Pays to be nice to everyone… not just condescending. I felt very small and insignificant when I left. If you go to this gallery you will love the art… hopefully you will able to have the graces of the queen bestowed upon you. I would have given one star but the art work is amazing. I wish I could have given 5 stars for the art.

This is our friend’s favorite gallery. We parked near the plaza and walked up Canyon Road where it was gallery galore. It was warm out and the walk was nice. I’d have to agree, it was definitely the nicest gallery. I think it had great artwork. I spent most of my time looking at the detail in Vladamir Kush’s work, specifically the long panoramic one. My bf asked how much it was and it was around $ 130K. Wow. Check out the back room with coolest desk ever and the beat of a broken heart. Very cool. The lady that worked there didn’t acknowledge me at all. Figures. I hate that. Doesn’t she know I’m a Unilocaler! Then again, it’s Santa Fe, the customer service there stinks. But you’re here for the artwork, not to make friends with the help. =)

I thought this gallery had wonderful absurdist art from Michael Parks to Michael Cheval as well as other artists. If you do not like absurdist art then don’t go here but if you do then this is your gallery on Canyon Road! I especially liked the coin fish pieces that were beautiful and unusual. Lots of really well done absurdist paintings and sculptures. I also thought the layout of the gallery was nice and open and pleasant to be in.

Chalk Farm Gallery contains some of the foremost fantasy artists in the world, most notably Michael Parkes, Daniel Merriam, and Alan Lee(the artist who designed most of the sets and props for the critically acclaimed movie«Lord of the Rings»). If you don’t enjoy fantasy and frown on creative imagination, you probably won’t enjoy this gallery. If, however, you prefer to see past the mundane and dull vestige of everyday art, this is the gallery for you.

I don’t think there’s necessarily more bad art in Santa Fe than any other city, it’s just that in Santa Fe every bad artist has gallery representation. If you do the Canyon Road walk, you will shortly see what I mean, and then you will come to Chalk Farm. I feel like stars aren’t the right rating system for Chalk Farm, because if you love half-naked mermen kissing faeries, this is your gallery. You’ve been waiting all your life for $ 5,000 paintings of elves and now you can have them. Take your inner dolphin right over to Chalk Farm and center yourself. Everyone else, you’ve been warned.
