this is one of those reviews where i hate to write it because i don’t want the secret to get out, but have to write it because i feel compelled to acknowledge and thank the staff and performers who put on this awesome series! in the interest of full disclosure, i’ll be the first to admit that i typically loathe free events. not because i don’t like free stuff, but because EVERYBODY likes free stuff, so free events usually devolve into a crowded, rude, ridiculous mosh pit of idiots, regardless of how awesome the content might have been(see my redbull flugtag in long beach review). jazz on the lawn was perfection. incredibly well organized, with ample parking in the office lot right next door, easily accessible restroom facilities, no lines at some very tasty and friendly food trucks(props especially to the sweet lucie’s 1959 ice cream truck), and even a bicycle valet! the venue, stewart park, was ideal as well. just the right size for people to spread out without getting in each others’ way, while being small enough to feel intimate. people brought their kids of all ages, and as a soon-to-be-dad, it was great to see all the little buggers running and dancing around in front by the stage while the adults had relaxing picnics on their blankets and chairs. there is even a playground area off to the side. last night was the first of a 5-week series, and the new orleans-style brass band was excellent. i loved the casual, local vibe of the whole event, including the lead singer’s young daughter hanging out with him on stage while his wife strolled around the park with a newborn in a sling. it was all just so… right. thanks again to the organizers, performers, and vendors, who all had big smiles and great enthusiasm. a good time was had by all. and thanks to wifey for finding this great experience on discover los angeles!
