Beware the manhole near Water Street’s public restroom! There is a faulty manhole near Water Street’s public restroom. It’s the restroom that features a mural representation of Georges-Pierre Seurat’s «Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte». My boyfriend and I visited Saugatuck from Chicago this past Saturday, and we happened by this restroom. Photo of public restroom: About 5 – 6 feet away from the corner in the forefront of the above photo, there is a covered manhole. I stepped onto the covered manhole with my right foot, and the cover collapsed under my weight, flipped over, and crushed my outer thigh as I fell in. The upper part of my shin hit the edge of the manhole. This SHOULDNOT happen with a covered manhole, but it happened to me. Takeaway lesson for me that day: do not step on top of a covered manhole. You never know whether you’d end up falling in. My boyfriend and I left the cover flipped upside down on top of the manhole to hopefully signal to others that this cover is NOTSAFE. I just finished writing an email to Mayor Hess about it, and I copied several city council members on the email, including the city manager and the police. Hopefully the manhole will be fixed soon. Aside from this awful incident, I thought that the city of Saugatuck was lovely. We had plans to visit a winery, but those plans got canceled because of my fall. Prior to my fall, however, we were able to purchase a beautiful painting at 75% off and some bottles of wine from a local shop so it kind of made our trip from Chicago worth it.

I loved this town! It was absolutely adorable. The only down side was that we visited a little before tourist season. So a lot of places were closed or had modified hours. We were only able to enjoy one of the wine tasting bars. And a few of the restaurants were only open for dinner or not at all on Tuesdays. There are all sorts of stores and boutiques to shop, with some cute little cafes, and bars. I would definitely recommend making a stop here for a day of shopping, drinking and eating.

Cute little tourist resort town. It was described to us as «artsy», but I would definately describe it as «touristy». If you love clothes shopping, or you are looking for home art décor, this may be a good place to look — very boutiquey. It was actually hard to find any good quality inexpensive locally made goods(pottery, a locally designed art poster, etc.), which disappointed me. The town itself is gorgeous, and there’s lots to do, all within walking distance(assuming you like to walk). Recommend wandering the shops for the morning, then taking the chain ferry accross the river, going to the Mt. Baldhead museum and climbing«Mt. Baldi» stairs… then wandering down to the beach. After that, if you plan it well enough, you can enjoy dinner along the waterfront and a concert in the park. Would I recommend: Yes Would I return: Yes
