Nice atmosphere being able to eat in a train car. Had the BLT with fries. The fries were very good, lived the seasoning!

Located in an actual train dining car, this restaurant is located at the east end of Downtown Historic area in the Visitor Center and is a great place to visit for the entire family. The food, hospitality and ambiance are all good. It’s not often that you get the chance to dine in an actual train dining car. So, take this opportunity. If you are taking one of the trolley tours, most start at the Visitor Center, so it’s easy to go to the diner.

My friend & I landed into Savannah at 10am and proceeded to our hotel and were told that we would not be able to get into our room until 3. We ventured to the visitors center and as soon as I saw the name of the café I wanted to eat here. In California A Café is normally a sit down restaurant, so I was a little taken aback when I realized it was basically a walk up counter… Not a problem as I’m not that lazy I can’t place an order standing up, just a bit of a surprise. The prices are a bit on the high side and while the people are nice I found the food mediocre at best, so much so that for the life of me I cannot recall what I ordered now. So my lesson in all this is, just because you love the name of an establishment it does not mean the food is going to be as outstanding. Three stars go to the staff that work there.

Fried green tomatoes were great. That sauce is excellent on fries. Sandwiches were good. We had the club and the chicken bacon ranch. Good portions, good flavor. The potato salad and pasta salad weren’t the worst ever but, I won’t order them again. Too much vinegary flavor in the potato salad and the pasta salad was just kind blah. The guy running the window was pleasant and friendly. We ate outside. It’s a nice atmosphere. Would I go back? Yes. It was a nice spot for lunch.

Eaten here a few times over the years and I keep coming back — the kitsch and location always make me think the food must be prepackaged and flash fried but it’s not! It’s a convenient lunch stop on the go with enough choices to keep most people happy but not so many that it’s hard to decide what to order. The lettuce is perfect — small, clean, and mixed greens for variety if you’re in the mood for salad. The fried items are fun and made well — green beans, green tomatoes and chicken are all great.

Are here years ago when you actually sat an ordered even on the train car. Food is good. It hate the set up and wish the train car felt more like it use to. Would eat here again but will bring my own wipes.

The cashier that takes your order was great! That is the only positive Thing I can say about this restaurant. First, we ordered a kids jelly sandwich with no peanut butter. The sandwich came to us with peanut butter. My fries never came until after we had all eaten. My husband never got his sweet potato fries. By the time my daughter got her jelly sandwich and I gotta fries, I told the server about my husband’s fries and I said not to bother bringing them because we were ready to leave. He tossed the food on the table and walked away! No apology or anything! Savannah is a wonderful city filled with wonderful restaurants. This is not one of them! Do NOT waste your time!

The positives: 1) located right at the visitors center, with parking 2) you can eat inside a train car 3) generous portions However, the food was mediocre at best. Easily the worst meal of our vacation. Too many other good options in Savannah to come back.

The Whistle stop café is in the Savannah Visitors Center Complex next to the Railroad museum. It is between two train cars. Yes, you can get tried green tomatoes there. You go in and order your food at a counter, where you also pay and they give you a number. You can elect to sit outside, in the little area near the counter or in a train car. We elected to sit in the train car. The car was blue in color with old suitcases on the shelves above the tables, spacious and mostly clean.(a few crumbs on a few tables) It took a about 15 minutes to get our food. Hubby had fried Chicken with Collard greens and I had a BLT on Rye with sweet potato fries. Hubby enjoyed the fried chicken and I enjoyed the BLT on Rye but I didn’t eat many of the sweet potato fries. They were a bit limp but tasty. I just was too full from the sandwich. They also have wonderful southern sweet tea. The Whistle Stop is a good place for lunch.

Loved this place. It is a must. Right next to history museum. You can pick up several different tour busses there too. Food is really good. Plenty of it and inexpensive. Yummy fried chicken. Servers were very nice too.

greetings– have been here on several occasions for lunch and they are very accommodating. Love eating outside — when it is not too hot. For a great cheap lunch — do ½ sandwich and one of there great soups. Everything is good !! ck it out –Can feel a bit crowded in the dinning car– but they have a larger room to the side– if you have a party larger than 4. Did a great special chef created dinner – for a group — it was beyond fab.!!

We stopped in here for breakfast. The menu is very limited. Eggs, Bacon, Hashbrowns and toast. Omlette was available. The food was average for breakfast. The price was consistant. The atmosphere was cute. You have a choice of sitting outdoors or inside an old train car. It was OK. I would not go out of my way to eat here, but it is a cute place to stop in if in the area.

if youre ever in savannah, you must MUSTMUST stop by the whistle stop café within the visitors center! it was at this lovely dining establishment i had my first fried green tomatoes experience. and no mentida — it was pretty increíble. though breaded and deep fried, the tomatoes were surprisingly not greasy. and to complement the savory taste of the tomatoes, the homemade dipping sauce was made of raspberries. a most excellent flavor combination. there are a few tables inside where we placed our order with the very friendly(of course they are, we’re in the south!) staff. but there is also outdoor seating available as well as dining space within the railroad car. when they said, «ya’ll come back now, ya hear?,» i really wanted to.(okay, fine, they didnt really say that. but it made a cute ending to my review.)
