Been seeing TV commercials for Morette’s King Steaks for years, and had it on my list of places to try when I was in the area. So a friend of mine and I went there excitedly to try it out last weekend. The place was old, which was cool, and still had the old time feel. There was no doubt as to what I was to order, the«King Steak» sandwich. I have been dreaming about them for years, and it was finally time to make it a reality. I read some rough reviews as of late, as it is under new ownership, and was deemed sub par, but I had to check it off my list. So I sat down(in a very uncomfortable booth I might ad) and ordered mine with mushrooms, onions and cheese. Now, with the cheese, you get a few options. American, provolone, or Cheese Wiz. So I asked the waitress which she recommended, and she suggested the Cheese Wiz. So I went for it. I was anticipating a nice cheese sauce, like on a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. But hell no, it was actually Cheese Wiz, like the kind in a jar, and it was absolutely horrid! Who the hell eats Cheese Wiz anymore?! I didn’t even know that shit was still made! They should rename it «Cheese Diarrhea», because that’s what it looked like happened on my sandwich. There was so much of it, it was all over the plate. But I had to at least try to eat it considering I’m paying for it. So I tried to eat the thing, and just got absolutely doused in hot, gooey, stinky cheese. It was all over my hands, face and clothes. I looked like I just went down a slidey chute coated in it. I tried to scrape it off the best I could and eat it plain. At this point I made a new discovery. The meat was the same exact type as in a «Steak Um». For a place that has a steak sandwich in it’s name, you would think the meat would be somewhat top notch. Not the case. It is the equivalent to what my 7 year old could whip up if I asked him to make me a cheesesteak sandwich at school. So to say the least, it was surely a disappointing trip. Maybe the other food is good, but if you are planning on going just to try the steak sandwich, save yourself the trouble.

I just had the«King» steak sandwich a few days ago. Meh was what came to mind. Underseasoned… Yes Morrette’s you have to season your sliced steak. The roll was fine and the peppers were fine… not great. It’s an overhyped steak sandwich. Just a tip– put the whiz on the bottom, it holds the sandwich together better. I ate half and lost interest in the sandwich. I didn’t notice that the customer service was as bad as everyone else but it was a forgettable and mediocre experience at best. Left disappointed.

As bad as everyone else here has stated. Steak sandwich had such a small amount of cheese I thought they had forgotten it. Fries are terrible. Near the end of the evening, two staff sat in the back room in the dark smoking cigarettes and drinking beer… while people were eating and the restaurant was still open for business. One of the two had their feet up on the table, where someone will eat their food the next day. Disgusting. This was my second attempt at eating here since the new owners, and it will be my last.

The service was slow for no good reason other than the waitress was busy chatting with other staff. The food was nowhere near the quality/quantity of that under the old ownership. The prices though, well those have increased. We weren’t asked if we wanted anything else, like dessert(don’t even know if they offer anything), after our meal. The sizable check was just sort of slapped down on the table. For the cost of that disagreeable experience, we could go to half a dozen other places within a few minute’s drive for a decent meal with good service. We won’t be going back.

Use to be good but with new ownership things have changed for the worse. Everything they make and i mean everything seems like it comes out of a can, bottle or is frozen. The tomato sauce is so watery that it is more like tomato soup then sauce, one time i ordered their appetizer sampler and everything was so overcooked and bunt that it was almost inedible. Also i think the owners attitude is really poor, sitting out front drinking beers and smoking cigars is not very professional and does not make your business look very good, and when we were leaving seeing us leave and knowing we were customers they didn’t even thanks us for our business. with food that comes out of can and unprofessional owners that don’t care if you patronize their business or not i really don’t see any need to go back

Thought we’d try the food at work with the girls I work with. We chose Morettes because I had a coupon as a reward from Citi card — Entertainment Book coupon & it is close to where I work. The waitress told me they were not accepting these till next year. Steak sandwich ok, Chicken sandwich was made with chicken lunch meat — disgusting –ended up throwing out most of it. It would have been better to keep the old Morette’s closed. They have lots of great restaurants in this area, so they better make a lot of improvements or close their doors.

I was not impressed with Morrette’s at all. I’m new to the area, so if it was great years ago I have no prior experience here to compare it to. The glass topped tables display an article about new owners purchasing the restaurant recently. Unfortunately, inside it doesn’t look like it has been updated in many years. It is a bit old and run down. As for the food, both my husband and I had the steak melt. He thought it was ok, but neither of us thought it had much flavor. I also thought yellow cheese on a steak sandwich was a poor choice(I don’t remember the menu saying anything about what type of cheese would be on the sandwich, it just said«cheese.») Too much fat in the pieces of meat, greasy rye bread, and yellow cheese that basically overpowered any flavor that the steak may have had sums up my dinner tonight. To top the experience off, I presented a buy one get one free coupon from the Entertainment Book app on my phone when it was time to pay. They acknowledged that they signed up to be in next year’s book, but wouldn’t be accepting those coupons until September(and yes the printed book will specify the dates the coupons are valid). However, the phone app doesn’t have any dates mentioned at all — if the coupon is there it’s supposed to be valid. They didn’t offer much of an apology, just blamed it on the Entertainment Book for putting it on the app too soon. The coupon is one reason we decided to try this place. To me, not honoring a coupon is just poor customer service, poor business practice, not to mention false advertising. They waitress did check with another lady who could have possibly been the owner to see if they would accept it. She said we could come back to use it in September, but I see no reason to come back to Morrette’s.

Absolutely some of the worst customer service. Ever. Period.(I want to finish there, however, Unilocal won’t allow) The atmosphere was uninviting and the waitress L confirmed. I can’t even believe there was room on the to go receipt for a tip. Food was.bland. Will never return nor recommend.

I thought it was charming atmosphere wise. I thought the waitress was excellent. We had the queen appetizer I thought the onion rings the best, the mozzarella sticks ok but my least favorite. The sauces were delicious. I thought the meat on the steak sandwich was delicious along with the sauce and the vegetables. Had provolone on the sandwich but couldn’t taste it and the bread was disappointing. I would definitely go back but next time gonna try one of those delicious looking burgers with onion rings which were the highlight of the meal. No room for dessert.

Wanted to love this mom and pop and give to the local community. I would say it was good but wasn’t loving it totally. My friend and I started with the queen appetizer which included breaded fried mushrooms, onion rings and mozzarella sticks. All of it was fried to perfection. We also got an large order of onion rings. I think out of the three the onion rings and than the mushrooms were the best. The mozz sticks were on the small size. We both ordered the steaks with provolone cheese, onions and peppers and red sauce. The sauce was very good and thicker then other reviews I read/heard about and flavored well. We were given 3 sauces for dipping: a russian, horseradish and more of that red sauce. All sauces were tasty but I would have liked the raspberry sauce for my mozzarella sticks but that didn’t make or break things. The steak was very good, tender but not huge and the roll it came in was nothing special. My friend thought the burgers people were having around us looked good but I guess we’ll have to see on another visit.

Yes, unfortunatly this is another sad review. I remember Morrette’s 20 years ago when the steak sandwich was literally the size of a large dinner plate. The new owners have changed everything except the name and the decorations. The sauce is straight Sysco canned, the meat is sub-par at best, portions are about half the size of what they were and the inside is literally FILTHY! I ordered take out and the counter was covered in sticky soda stains, the windows are cacked with grease and even the menus are stained. I LOVE greasy spoons(think Mike’s across the street) but this Morrett’s is about one visit from the Department of Health away from closing down. Dine at your own risk!

Had a couple steak sandwiches today from, the new Moretts, they were Great nothing has changed they were better than ever. I got a steak platter to go, everything was seperated into containers with 2 steak rolls so when we got back to Boston we could reassemble our steaks. AWESOME Merry Christmas to me.

Waited a good fifteen minutes before anyone took our order — one waitress for the front dining room while the female owner(The Queen as her shirt stated) stood behid the counter and did nothing but yell at her wait staff, move takeout bags around and make her customers feel uncomfortable by her yelling to her staff. We have eaten here countless times under the previous owners and have always had a most positive experience. We were there today and I can honestly say, we will NEVER go back. The food was«ew» — to say the — the patty melt was so tough, it was like shoe leather… we ordered macaroni salad, they were«out»…the waitress took our order but the line cooks somehow didn’t see half of our order so my friend got his sandwich but I had to wait another 15 minutes for mine. The owner is rude, unapologetic and downright crass to her staff. Overall, it was one of the worst experiences I’ve had while eating out. It’s clear the owner is all about status and nothing more. Very full of herself!!!

I am very sad writing this. I loved this place, hubby too. The sauce is not anywhere close. Full of water and far too young. The peppers were not soft and scrumptious. The appetizers were very good. Service was by my favorite server. Smiles, great service. :(

Grew up in the area and today was my first time eating at Morette’s. Makes me wish I ate there under the previous ownership. First of all, when we walked in we were hit with a cloud of smoke and I could barely breathe. The whole front of the restaurant was in a fog. Hmm, bad ventilation system? We immediately sat in the back room. There was only one waitress in the whole restaurant. One lady was taking drink orders and that was it… would’ve been nice if she helped out. It took a while to put our order in, but the waitress was very friendly. The fries were frozen, not hand-cut like they were previously. That was a big letdown. And the steak sandwich was SO bland, meat dry. The onions and peppers didn’t seem to help. And the red sauce had no flavor; it tasted like it came out of a can. I’m glad it’s crossed off my list, but I won’t be back.

They have reopened under the same name but are operated by what’s called The Martin Family. Nothing really has changed at all with the steak sandwiches for which they became famous. I can’t really rate them as I’m just not a cheese steak fan and the stomach can’t handle all the oil, peppers and onions. Stopped in at lunch today and the place was packed and the guys at the grill were struggling to keep up. I guess they have old loyal following. I think they still need some practice with service as I saw a number of minor order errors which I would say had a lot to due with the lunch crowd and the staff needs practice. Growing pains :) Looks like they use nicely sliced all beef in the sandwiches and they chop it up. The fries and onion rings are your typical fast food type. They came from a frozen box of onion rings and or fries from a regular Sysco box to the deep fryer. Nothing appears to battered at the store. I ordered the ½ Lb. hamburger which was as described freshly made that day and not a frozen patty. It was tasty and served with fries and some pickle slices. Overall the place could use a good cleanup as nothing has really changed in the restaurant interior since the old days. Generally I’m not a fan of these type of restaurants but it was worth try. If you want a fresh ground burger offered in many ways it was very good. Staff and service was all very good ad everyone who worked there was very pleasant and helpful!

After hiking in the Catskills, we were on our way to Lake George for the night and were hungry. Found this place on tv food maps app, and figured we’d stop. The potato skins a were great. The sandwiches not so much. The steak didn’t have much taste and the sandwich was a mess to try to eat with the red sauce. I’d probably go back if I was ever in that town again, but doubt I’d drive out of my way for it.

I first tried Morrette’s once a few years ago and thought it was ok. After this last visit I won’t be returning. The steak is dry and very bland. The red sauce tastes like a can of tomato paste, and the cheese sauce isn’t whiz. The potato skins were just slices of potato that weren’t even overly crispy covered in cheese sauce. The food is cheap and the portions are large but that’s about the only thing they’ve got going for them.

Summary– Old school place gets a solid 3 stars because original is awesome. Food– 2.5 Stars The Steak sandwiches(which are kinda like Cheesesteaks smothered in tomato sauce) were just O.K. The steak itself was actually pretty darn good, decently seasoned and LOTS of it. My issue was that it was nearly inedible as a sandwich because it was so large AND because the lower part of the bun was soggy from all the meat juice. I prefer to be able to eat my sandwiches, so when I had to fork and knife it I was a little disappointed. The Chili Cheese fries also rank as O.K. Good fries smothered in cheese sauce and chili. I didn’t like the chili it was waaaay too tomatoish for my tastes. Service– 4 Stars Efficient and nice. Atmosphere– 5 Stars Authentic all the way. Value– 4 Stars Cheap bang for the buck.
