Very random and dense collection of vinyl, but it’s not«curated» — the selections look for the most part like they’re just culled from garage sales in the area. That said, the Re-Collector has picked up a few gems so if you’re a hard core collector, you’ll likely spend a little time flipping through the bins. There’s some CDs, DVDs, cassettes, and even a shelf of 8-tracks, and then a bunch of completely randomized tschotschkes. While I’m a sucker for this sort of thing usually we haven’t found anything interesting on repeated visits. The music and vibe can be interesting or annoying, which goes double for the Re-Collector himself; he seems to be a bit moody. The store’s pretty cramped, too, so go in with your claustrophobia under control and I recommend not taking any bags in, either. Worth a buzz-by if you like random odd used stuff stores, but not a can’t miss one-of-those-things IMHO.

It’s kind of a weird place… but in a good way. The owner is nice, and the assortment of randomly cool and nostalgic stuff that he has is impressive. There were plenty of «holy shit I remember this» things that he had for sale… very neat. Combining this with some reasonable pricing and you get a weird little shop that’s well worth visiting.

While wandering around downtown Schenectady, near Proctor’s Theatre, we stumbled across what seemed to be a used CD/Record store. From the time we got in, «The Re-Collector» was friendly and played some tunes for us while we browsed the store. After 15 – 20 minutes of browsing, we ended up leaving with more than 10 CDs and paid a whopping $ 3 for them(we also got 6 really cool old post cards for an additional $ 2). I can’t begin to explain just how much music is crammed into this shop. You’ll find boxes and boxes of CDs, records, and tapes. The owner is nice, the price is right, and the music covers every genre. If you are in downtown Schenectady, you should add this location to your list of places to check out.
