Ascona Apartments

I felt hesitant in posting this but I feel new residents should know. I cannot express how much of a nightmare it was to live in this apartment complex. I thought I had found a gem considering it was kind of updated, reasonably priced and the manager seemed nice enough.
The inappropriate behavior by the on site manager was appalling. His harassment texts and his late night drunken beatings on my door to my apartment. I even had to call the police once. It all started when I found mouse droppings in my apartment and it quickly accumulated to actual visual sightings. The management didn’t do much. They put out a few traps and called it a day. They had their pest control guy come out and he didn’t do anything and said he was not legally able to move the fridge or the «dishwasher» from the wall to find the entrances where the mice came in from. So if you feel like living with rodents and a crappy on-​site manager who harasses you and sends you texts such as «Everybody Hates You.» «You are a horrible person!» and that was just the mild part of the texts. I would suggest finding another building without an emotional mess of a drunk on-​site manager. I took picture of everything and screen shot all the harassment, mouse droppings and still have my police case number on file in case he came after me. I was actually scared for my life! This was definitely a first for me and I hope I never have to relive such a nasty experience.

Wondering why my view apt was so cheap, until 6 mos in when I started to get the bites.
Then, when I started to do the research, I found shockingly similar stories to mine. Management tried to blame me and say it was only in my apartment! Nice isolation, gaslighting and victim blaming.
Eek! Methinks not is right!

This company has been flagrantly violating WA tenant law since it bought the building this fall. We are being threatened with eviction if we don’t pay them the $ 100 that we withheld from rent after they entered our unit without consent (according to state tenant laws).
The management also threatened to withhold treatment of a bed bug infestation because we complained about the unauthorized entry.

I gave the new management the benefit of the doubt and they’ve responded by threatening to evict us.
Our dog Doyle lives with us and we are all concerned about persons entering our apartment without our knowledge. The management let third party contractors into our apartment to collect equipment after a water emergency had been cleaned up but didn’t mention this to us. Our dog was alone in the apartment at the time.
We notified the manager of the relevant Washington tenant law before and after the infraction took place and withheld $ 100 from the next month’s rent per rcw code we’ve received a notice that we may be evicted.
The kicker is they cited a tenant law for emergency entry and claimed that firemen came to carry the contractor’s equipment out with a search warrant. (they would have met no resistance if they’d asked before kicking the door in)
I suggest you move in TODAY, this new manager may break enough laws that you’ll be living rent free.

When I first moved to Seattle, I lived here. I was 18, bright-​eyed, very naïve, and had never even been to Seattle before …
So apparently the area is sketchy. I’m a small female, I stomped around this ‘hood alone at all hours of the day/​night for almost 3 years, and I was *never* bothered by anyone. Not one bad experience to date.
The dumpster area/​alley behind the building was definitely suspect judging by the occasional evidence of «hijinx» transpiring there (used condoms, empty booze bottles, mud, yuck, etc.), but again I had no bad run-​ins. It seemed like most of the seediness was concentrated a few blocks away, but very few seedy characters ever made it up the hill to my building.
The building was relatively tidy inside, if a little outdated. For some reason there was a constant (yet highly amusing) graffiti battle in the elevator.
The manager was very approachable and quick about fixing things. Non-​canine pets were welcomed.
Sometimes the neighbors cooked odd-​smelling food, but noise was never a problem. (Evidently one of my neighbors was a PCP dealer, though …)
But the apartment … OH the apartment!
$ 500 a month got you an 800-​square-​foot studio with super-​high ceilings and huuuuuuuuuge windows with sweeping views of downtown and Elliot Bay. With a big-​ass bathtub and a cute lil’ kitchen, I turned this place into my own secret urban respite. Loved it!
And the location was perfect, too, especially for someone new to the city and eager to explore. It’s right on the bus tunnel, blocks to Uwajimaya & Pioneer Square, and walking distance to the downtown core.
Though I eventually outgrew that studio, I definitely miss it. Definitely.
Bottom line: Fabulous units, excellent bargain, and perfect location … Just keep to yourself! And don’t be too squeamish.
