Clearwire Activation

I signed up for Clear after hearing some good things from a neighbor (who I found out heard the good things from a friend of his). I called the account setup line with some questions (I have a background in computers and wanted to know some technical details before signing up)… what I got was a high-​pressure sale from someone with little to no technical knowledge, so I hung up. I called back hoping to get someone else, which I did, who turned out to be a nice young man who lied to me about the speed, non-​sale price and contract (the last two by omission). Why I signed up, I’m still not sure, but I did.
I was promised 12+Mbps down and 1+ up. The ‘+’ is important here… I was guaranteed ’12+’, not ‘up to 12 under ideal circumstances’. What I get is anywhere from 0 to 11Mbps, depending on the time of day.
I regularly call Clear’s customer service and request a reset and a refund for the lack of service (¹⁄₃₀^th of my bill) They did this no problem (after a 30 minute call) the first couple times, then they started arguing about terms of service before refunding the $ 1.67 (that’s all I ask for each time I have to stop what I’m doing and spend a ½ hour asking to actually receive what I’m paying for). Now they’ve moved on to denying the refund unless service has been out for 24 or more consecutive hours. I don’t know about you, but I generally only use my connection for a few hours a day (if that) and if dinner and a movie turns into dinner and a… loading… bar, my internet enjoyment for the night is pretty much ruined.

Conclusion: Your service is bad and you should feel bad.

I purchased Clear and signed up for the ‘Unlimited’ package with the home modem and the USB travel modem. I was told that my download speeds would never be below 4mbps on the download and 1mbps on the upload.
From the moment I plugged it in until five months later I never, not one time, got ABOVE 2.0 download and .7 upload. Not only was my connection less than 50% of promised speed, but it would just quit multiple times a day, every day. The record was ten times I lost signal in a single day, each time having to unplug and reboot the router. After calling Clear more than 30 times in those 5 months they finally replaced my home modem and I was able to reach the speeds promised, but the connectivity did not improve so the internet was basically unusable.
Finally, I have cancelled my service through Clear (a little slow on the uptake, I know) and when I told them that they did not meet the requirements of our contract they told me to give my equipment to someone else and have them pick up the rest of my contract or else pay them an early termination fee.
In general the people I spoke with at Clear are decent people (a few exceptions aside), but the service I received from them was HORRIBLE.
In the five months I dealt with Clear I scheduled three different appointments with a technician to come out to my home and do whatever it is they do when they come out… I never found out what that is because each of the three times I scheduled an appointment, each time I «cleared» my calendar to make time for them I was stood up with no explanation, no call, and apparently no recored (on their end) that they were even supposed to come out.
I hope the rest of their customers have had better experiences than mine.
