I hired Carlos and his company to clear ¹⁄₃ of an acre of blackberry and horsetail. The deal was that for $ 4,500 (a ridiculous amount of money), he would clear it all down to the dirt, and carry out all the debris. I explained to him that it would be a tough job, as everything would have to be carried up a slope to the street.
He walked the property with me and quoted me $ 4,500 and said that «Your satisfaction is guaranteed. We will leave your property just the way you will love it.» He told me that I don’t pay him until the job is finished. He said that the quote was very high because he will do a complete and thorough job. I could have gone with a company who quoted me half that price, but I trusted that Carlos would do the cleanest job.
The first day he arrived with two guys and a bunch of machines. He was able to cut down a lot, but not all of the greenery. He continued to call me down to the site and would complain about how the machines can’t get «all of the blackberry». I told him to do it by hand. For $ 4,500, shouldn’t he be willing to do a little manual labor?
He didn’t show up the next day. When he did show up for his second day of work, he got very little done. He rang my doorbell and said this was «slave work.» It was only his second day on the job! He didn’t show up the next day.
When he did show up again, with the majority of the work still to be completed, he called me down and complained how hard the job was and that he will be losing money on it. He argued with me like a small child complaining that it was too difficult. I reminded him of his deal and promise to me. In the end, he insisted I pay him $ 1,300, and he walked off the job.
I would never ever recommend this immature, complaining, and lazy teenager to do a job.
