Quaint, cozy, and cute lil’ place! We live so nearby and have passed it up for too long. So glad that we finally stopped in for dinner. Flavorful, great service, just a delight! Call before coming to make sure that they are open. They close for dinner when they host their cooking class(Monday nights, I believe — but I could be mistaken). Sweet spot that should be celebrated for all that it brings to the neighborhood! Enjoy!

Really good food, a pretty nice atmosphere, very friendly service. A good neighborhood spot. It seems like it is usually pretty dead — I hope they make it!

my friend had a groupon for a cooking class here. it was a roll of the dice type of thing. she just thought it would be fun to do, and it really was inexpensive. neither of us had eaten here before, but so we really didn’t know what to expect. when you walk in, it has sort of a foyer and you have to walk down a sort of hallway into the rear dining room. by the time i got there, there were quite a few people sitting there waiting for the class. there was a counter, with a kitchen tucked behind it and a small dining room, separated by a partition. as we all introduced ourselves, we were wondering how this would work. some folks had already some wine while they waited. the owner soon popped out, asked us to wash up before beginning. given that there were only a few guys in the group, we filed into this super large bathroom with a great, deep bowl of a sink and cleaned up. then, the women started in on the guys bathroom to make things go more quickly. he brought out a couple of gas burners to set on the table, explained the book that they gave us and proceeded to walk us down sambusa making, a lentil stew(that took a long time to make) and some lamb tibs. it wasn’t that hands on and he spent a lot of time describing culture and what was authentic and what wasn’t. the food took about 3 hours and then we set to eating, sort of cafeteria style. honestly, i thought the food turned out well. it was tangy and savory, with some underlying heat. i’ll need to come for dinner again. for the cooking portion, i thought it was fun and a pretty good deal with the groupon.

Came here to use a coupon i purchased from home run. Overall: More like 3.75(up quarter star for service) Location: 2⁄5 Ambience: 3⁄5. The red light are a little too much and some tables are not well lit. Staff: 5⁄5. Very friendly and courteous. They make suggestions and check in periodically to see how you are doing. Food 3.5÷5 Got the fish cakes, the salad accompanied the fish cakes was yummy. The cakes themselves were well done, but lacked a punch in the flavor. Had the peri peri chicken and the fish with ingira for main course. Ther peri peri chicken was cooked perfect and had a very nice kick to it. Stay away if you dont like spice or tangy flavors. The fish was fresh and tasted delicious with the caramelized onions. I am not a big fan on ingira(too sour for my liking), however I liked the ingira here sinceit was not was not as sour. On the whole very good experience and would consider going back there, might not drive out of the way to get there.

I bought the cooking class groupon for myself and my mother for a girls night out. We had so much fun, learned a lot, met neat people, and feasted on full flavored dishes and African wines. the atmosphere is just lovely, and the staff friendly. i will certainly be back. Great night for something different– especially for real foodies! Someone on Unilocal mentioned that the Sambusas are life changing. I must agree, get them! The chef has his own cook book written with his mother. There is certainly a mixture of heart and talent in this place!

Great food and wonderful space. Decorated with African-themed art, this intimate setting provides a superb atmosphere for enjoying the bold and spicy favors of its dishes. It’s location in West Seattle is just a bit challenging, as it lies in the dearth of restaurants between the Alaska and Morgan jxn’s, and being about equidistant from both. The service was friendly, helpful, and just the right pace. Every dish sounded tantalizing, but my wife and I decided on the Piri Piri Chicken, and the Doro Wot Chicken, with Sambusas to start. The Sambusas came in the form of two large triangles, packed with vegetable and lentils. Very good. Both entrees were fantastic! The Doro Wot chicken came on a bed of injera, with sides of spicy lentils and veges, all covered with a red garlic pepper sauce. Very good. My favorite part of this had to be the lentils, which were packed with spice and flavor(although not too hot). My favorite dish overall had to be the Piri Piri Chicken, though. You simply do not get spicy heat like this in the states! If you don’t like heat – steer clear of this one! I loved it, though, and I couldn’t stop until I had licked the bones clean. The Piri Piri came with a selection of two sides: we chose Harissa Mac and Cheese and Coconut Cilantro Mashed Potatoes. The Mac and Cheese was a bit mild and bland, but the Potatoes struck a good balance between light, yet delicately flavored, bringing out the cilantro and coconut. Delicious. PanAfrican Grill has definitely earned a repeat visit. Can’t wait to try our next dishes from the menu.

I came in for dinner with my buddy and was very impressed. The portions are HUGE. I ordered the chicken with 2 sides. The spicy mac and cheese was awesome and the mashed potatoes were very good too. The chicken was seasoned nicely and very juicy. A big plate of delicious food for under $ 15! I’m a fan! The service was good and the atmosphere was nice. I will be back again!

The service and environment were fine, but I thought the food was really bland. We started with some fried okra, which was pretty ho-hum, and then the main courses came. The salad(which was more like a fruity/spicy coleslaw) was actually really delicious. I had goat and my companion had chicken, and those were good(though as is the case with most goat curries, it’s a lot of bone and not a lot of meat), but not great. The chicken had a peanut sauce that tasted like watery Thai food sauce and had no spice at all, but was sweet enough that it was okay. The rice(or whatever it was) that was served as a side had a really odd texture and had no spice or flavor at all. It’s worth a try, but I probably wouldn’t go back.

Great service, even during our Groupon procrastination bottleneck. Fish cakes appetizer is exceptional. Warm atmosphere, a little tight though. Music at the right level.

I’ve driven by this place a hundred times, and finally decided to stop in. The atmosphere was quite nice; the music was not too loud and the lighting was subdued. We were seated promptly; I had made a reservation but didn’t need it on a Thursday night. I would echo some of the other commentors in that the food was excellent, but the service was a little slow, not painful though. The wait staff was friendly and clearly trying, but seemed to be struggling though the place wasn’t busy. They had a limited beer and wine selection which was not on a menu, but what we tried was good; a Shiraz and an Ethiopian lager. We had three appetizers — Ahi wraps were outstanding — and shared the Doro Wott entrée — loved it. In all a pleasant experience, and I would definitely go back to try some of the other menu items.

After having 16 shot of espresso, walked around Greenlake I was set for dinner. Therefore, me and my buddy contemplated what to eat; our first choose was Thai food, but we decide to venture to Pan African Grill in West Seattle. I have eaten Ethiopian food most of my life and have eaten at several restaurants in Seattle, so I know what to expect! Don’t let the outside appearance of this restaurant fool you. When I step inside, I was surprised to find out Pan African Grill atmosphere is clean and simple, yet intriguing. Actuality, my buddy love the décor and the lighting, he say«it’s cozy and warm which remind him of Jewel box Café at Northgate.» The food is absolutely delicious, the service was fantastic, and the owner and staff are extremely friendly. You truly get enough food for two hungry guys by ordering Doro Wat and Grilled Chicken which was delicious. I will be back, it is worth the trip, and I can’t find these flavors anywhere else.

I *really* wanted to love this place, because we live really really close by and love Ethiopian food. However, now having been twice, I just don’t think we’ll be going back. First, the service is slooooooow. So if you’re out for a leisurely date, I’m sure that’s not a problem When you bring your kids along, it really becomes problematic. Second, the food is just… eh. It’s fine. I’ve been to probably 6 – 7 different Ethiopian restaurants in my life(a few many, many times) and Pan Africa was probably my least favorite of all of them. We tried the veggie combo both times, and the second time also ordered the Groundnut Chicken and the plaintain fries. There’s nothing wrong with the food… it’s just… fine. Forgettable. And for the price(a bit higher than most Ethiopian fare), I wanted more. So I guess my restaurant budget is happy that I didn’t love it. But I’m a little disappointed, myself.

We walked in the door and stood there waiting while four different girls zoomed past us. The décor is dark and warm with well known African-esque music playing. We were expecting a traditional greeting when the cook popped his head out of his hole and informs us that someone would be right with us. So there we stood for a good ten minutes. I suggested we leave but my girlfriend urged me on. Finally after 15 minutes one of the servers seated us followed by our server with water. Take note that as of early November, Pan African Grill is a BYOB establishment. They say they’re waiting for a liquor license. As far as the food goes, the injira was very decent and the food was great. We ordered the combo platter which was served on a giant injira. All the different foods had a nice kick to them. So if your stomach can’t handle it I would stay away from the combo platter. To sum it up: service sucked, food rocked, and BYOB.

The food is delicious. Seriously, it’s delicious. The service is friendly, but slow. I’m not an impatient person, but it took about 45 minutes for our food to arrive on a Friday night. I highly recommend the Sambusas. They’re life changing. Also, everything on the vegetarian platter is delicious and über-flavorful. I’m Definitely going back.

Truly enjoyed our visit to the grill. The wait staff was highly attentive, and I enjoyed learning about the various food stuffs of that region of Africa. I would definitely come again.

We love the Pikes Market Pan Africa and this location is different but equally great. In both food and décor it a trendy version of an Ethiopian restaurant. We love the simple plantain chips. All of the food is unique and has the tastes and surprises that you expect from a gourmet restaurant. The only critique was with the wait staff. It may be because they are new. The staff seemed to be trying but they had trouble with communication and attention. Our server could not explain that the dip had mayonnaise. Both waitresses often walked by without scanning to see what was needed. I am sure the owner, who is very service oriented with remedy this soon.

Been here twice so far and was pleased with the food both times. It’s only a few blocks from our house, though it would be worth the trip if further away. It’s a small space, but well laid out and decorated. The first trip I had the goat and my wife had the veggie combo. I was pleased with the food. We got extra injera with the meal and they were happy to bring us extra when we asked. However the second trip was an even better experience. We started with the fried plantains. They were fried crispy and the sauce they came with was nicely flavored. I got the grilled chicken and a friend got the Tuna Kitfo, and my wife returned to the veggie combo. The meat dishes were a much better choice than the goat. Don’t get me wrong, the goat was fine, but the grilled chicken was amazing, it was perfectly cooked, really juicy and the piri-piri spice is delicious. My friend’s ahi was good quality fish, it was spicy, but went really well with the injera it was served on. The veggie combo remained a nice variety of veggies, but be warned that it is very spicy. The yellow lentils were the favorite on the platter. Their injera is good. The second trip they were experimenting with a gluten-free version, which was a little bit stiffer than when made with wheat flour. The flavor wasn’t changed, and the texture was still good. On the second trip the waitress was clearly ESL and had some trouble getting our order correct, but the entire staff was very friendly about it and did an acceptable job backing her up. It’s not the fastest service I’ve ever experienced, but I go and plan to enjoy a nice meal with friends, so it works out just fine. When we were getting our check one of the staff mentioned that they are starting brunch soon. My wife and I are looking forward to that!

no. uh uh. nope. never again. i really like ethiopian food and eat it fairly often. i was looking forward to this place based on the great things i’ve heard about the one downtown. i bought a groupon for this location to give me the incentive to try it out, being that it’s the most expensive african restaurant i’ve seen. we were seated way in the back, at a table away from everyone else. i wondered if it was my friend’s pink hair that put them off… it was fine, just seemed strange. i asked about using the groupon and the waitress took it from me. the food is no good. just no good. we ordered 2 orders of plantain chips to start. they were fine, but totally unseasoned. the dipping sauce they come with i swear to god is the special sauce from the big mac. tastes like thousand island dressing. my husband & i got the veggie combo. the injera was cold(and they did not bring out any extra even though 2 of us were sharing it), and it was the smallest platter i’d ever seen. usually we share a veggie combo & we’re both stuffed. here, we had an appetizer before the meal and hubby had to order another app afterward to make up for the small portion. and it just didn’t taste good. our dining companions ordered the half chicken platter, and it came out with a quarter chicken. we brought it to the waitress’ attention and next thing we know the chef comes out & explains that they are out of half chickens. so… why didn’t you put 2 quarters on the plate?! just pretend like they won’t notice half the chicken missing? so we waited another 10 minutes for them to bring out the other quarter. my friends did say the chicken platter was tasty. the icing on the cake? the waitress brought the bill without crediting the groupon! i know this location is new but since the other location is well-established, i at least expected the food to shine. what a waste.

Finally! African food in West Seattle. My two daughters love the«flag ship» restaurant on First Ave, by Pike Place, but we don’t go very often because of the traffic, parking etc. and well… like every other African/Ethiopian restaurant I’ve gone to in the U.S., the time between ordering and delivery seems to run on a Jupiter or Saturn clock. So, feeding hungry kids on-the-go ain’t happening so much. We went last Friday after they had been a open a few weeks. The girls were disappointed that their favorite dish, chicken with apricots, dates and coconut wasn’t on the menu, but they quickly rebounded with the other options. The fried plaintain with a remoulade-like dipping sauce were quickly gobbled up(I managed to grab a few). The veggie combo Ethiopian plate with injera was some of the best renditions of the usual fare(red lentils were primo!). And, the grilled chicken with the spicy sauce was a succulent treat. You get to select two sides from a variety of options; we got the harissa mac-n-cheese(yum!) and the coconut/cilantro mashed taters… so good we had to order another side order of those. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with african artifacts and a savannah theme, you’d never believe it was the Ho(Hum) Win just months ago. All of the servers were friendly, helpful and attentive. And, amazingly, we didn’t have to wait a long time for the food! Loving that! We look forward to going back and trying more of the other entrees on the menu!
