Propel Biodiesel

It seems that all the Propel Biodiesel stations have closed. Dr. Dan’s is open and I think Han’s?

Propel has just scratched the surface. They are trying to do good things however the quality of their fuel is not up to the bar set by the top suppliers in the market.
Case in point. I filled up with Propel Biodiesel and drove to Eugene, OR. My fuel consumption ended up being about 40 MPG. While in Eugene I finished the tank and refueled with Sequential Biodiesel and drove back. My fuel consumption on the return trip was 48 MPG. I’ve come to find out Sequential also has my car running smoother and with more power. The only place in Seattle I’ve been able to find Sequential Biodiesel is at Hans Foreign Car Repair in West Seattle.

Great product, very competitive pricing. I find it more economical to buy Propel fuel than to use other (petro-​based) sources, and it’s locally manufactured into the bargain.
Deserves the patronage of all who burn Diesel.

I love the spirit of propel fuels, and also love their «clean drive» program, which helps me track how much impact I make by running biodiesel instead of petrodiesel. I love that this station has the real deal — well, B99 (except in the winter, when it’s a higher blend of petro diesel to keep the bio from gelling up when its cold). I’ve been running mostly this in both my work truck and car for 2 years now and love that it burns cleaner (smells yummy, too when its the full bio blend). However, I’ve got mixed feelings about Propel in general because their marketing is deceptive. Most of their stations only have B5 or B20, which is only UP TO 5% or 20% biodiesel — with the rest being regular. In other words, they’re selling a product that’s 5%-80% regular, petroleum diesel from the Middle East, yet calling it biodiesel. In what other industry would that fly? You don’t see coca cola selling a 80% regular coke, 20% diet coke and calling it diet. Get honest, propel, and start selling the full biodiesel at all of your stations instead of mostly just B5 and B20. Especially because all recent diesel vehicles can run bio with no modifications and no problem (mine are a 2001 Ford F350 and a 2004 Jetta TDI). But, despite all that, this station gets 5 stars because they have the real deal here.

As a newbie to the whole diesel/​biodiesel «thing» I look to my hub for information. We acquired an older Passat TDI which could accept both kinds of diesel without modification. The Unilocal app certainly came in handy when it came to searching for fill-​up locations. There were very few places but fortunately we live close to just about all of them (score, for us!).
At first, it was difficult to find this station because it’s quite small. After driving past it and not knowing what we were looking for (despite the helpful pics), I finally put the directions to lead us to Bernie’s Automotive and there! The station stood, lit up like xmas, and I wonder how we missed it those other times we drove through.
It’s 24/​7, unmanned, and accepts cards. They adjust the biodiesel for the season. During the summer/​warm months it’s B99 and in the winter/​cold months (as of Nov 2011), it’s B75. It’s great that they do this automatically for their customers. You can also create a profile to see how much you’ve offset by driving a bio-​d car. Gas is just over $ 4/​gal and as you know, you can go a zillion miles per gallon on bio/​diesel. :) We’re averaging over 40mpg.
Since getting the car in July, we have come here to fill up four times. Four times! That’s like one fill-​up per month!

I’ve been buying their B20 at the Kenmore location since it opened, and never had a problem with the product. The only small problem is that sometimes the receipt machine doesn’t work. The price is always reasonable. I just wish they would sell B50 or B99 here in the summer.

Top-​notch fuel for diesels, and very good customer service. Had a problem with the pump at their Ballard location — the shut-​off didn’t work, spilling fuel on the ground. Called them up and they sent 2 5-​gallon fuel cards for the hassle, then came out and fixed the pump.
Buy local, buy quality.

I love Propel! Convenient 24-​access biodiesel, and the price is right! Only 10 cents more per gallon than the dino-​diesel down the street at the Shell. B75 now for the winter months to prevent gelling, B99 when it warms up.

New Station in front of Bernie’s Automotive on Leary Way. Open 24 hrs, an automated machine accepts all major credit cards. The Filling station offers B99 Biodiesel. Pretty basic B99 filling station in Ballard, Propel Biodiesel is made from fresh oil in the south end of Seattle right by the West Seattle bridge.
I love filling up my TDI with yummy B99; 78% less global warming CO2 than petroleum diesel, Reduces cancer-​causing exhaust toxins by 80% to 90%, Eliminates sulfur-​associated pollutants and reducing other air toxins by 60% to 90%, Performance B99 has higher cetane and better lubricity, which contributes to better performance and longer engine life! Gelling point is posted at 9* and I have never had any gelling issues even when I take my car up to snowboard.
