Troy Lucero’s Acme Yoga Project

Excellent class! I was in town for work and thought I’d check out the local yoga scene so I stopped by for a morning class. Troy was very friendly, he greeted me as I came in. I got there a bit early and he took time to show me some additional stretches and warm up exercises with some of the floor equipment that he brought. During the class he was very helpful checking in on me and giving me corrections since some of the poses were less familiar to me. Great workout, very challenging, rejuvenating mediation. It seems like a great yoga community.

Light hearted, kind spirited yoga based on traditional techniques and expert instruction. A true community experience with a rarely available expert in an authentic space. Just really amazing on all accounts.

Troy is a phenomenal teacher with an incredibly deep knowledge of yoga and distinct ability to articulate clear direction and practical application for each student. He is also exceptionally skillful at physical assists which have helped elevate my practice by increasing my understanding of my own body’s capacity.
I’ve found Troy’s teaching style to be dynamic, authentic, educational, physical, and constantly evolving/​challenging for me — for three years and counting. I admit, my introduction to yoga began in the homogenized, «inspirational» workout style of yoga prevalent throughout Seattle, and at some point, I decided I wanted «more» from my investment and the overall experience.
What I’ve found is a practice and a community that is accessible and welcoming to absolute beginners and advanced practitioners alike. I now personally prefer the Mysore classes (independent study) and yet always gain valuable insights and/​or new distinctions during guided classes. I actually recommend that a total newbie go to a Mysore class first, to experience direct, personalized instruction from Troy.
As much as I put in to my practice, I get out of it, which is what I love most about this studio environment and working with Troy. My practice with Troy allows me the space and opportunity to cultivate and deepen my own learning, supported by his wealth of experience and extensive knowledge as a true teacher.
I feel extremely grateful to have someone of Troy’s caliber here in Seattle!

My least favorite Ashtanga studio in Seattle. The space (the West Hall of the Oddfellows Building) is beautiful and well-​suited to asana practice, but I do not understand why people (so many of them yoga teachers) flock to this guy. He is certainly skilled; I don’t doubt that. Yet he doesn’t create an aura of meditation, stillness, or focus and concentration. I’ve attended both the Mysore and led classes. The led classes are perhaps slightly better because he’s forced to constantly engage with the students. Mysore is hit or miss. Often Troy is on his cell phone, and I’ve noticed that more advanced students receive most of the assistance and attention (shouldn’t it be the other way around?). He allows students to bring their dogs into the room, which I find odd and disruptive. If you have years of Ashtanga under your belt, you might enjoy the atmosphere here, but I suggest beginners seek out Sarah Plumer’s studio instead.

Pure yoga. Just you, your mat, breath and movement. Troy keeps it simple.
There’s no music, just his words.
There’s no heaters, just internal heat.
He gives you the direction to go in and lets you explore, all the while reminding you of the details of the asanas that your body will thank you for later.
Note that Troy is very hands on and will come around to adjust you. This may feel jarring at times. But trust that he knows what he is doing.

Mysore style (independent study) starts at 6am M-​Fri.
Guided practice is Tu, Th, Sa 9:15 — 10:45am.

Troy is one of the most experienced and talented yoga teachers I’ve ever come across. He has been teaching for decades and before coming to Seattle worked with Richard Freeman. Definitely a place where you can take your Ashtanga practice to the next level. Troy is firmly rooted in the best aspects of the Ashtanga tradition without being bound by it.
Classes are held (Mon-​Sat) morning in Capitol Hill. The guided classes (especially Saturday morning) can get quite large but somehow Troy manages to personally attend to every student that needs a skillful adjustment. That’s another exceptional thing about his teaching style — the hands-​on adjustments.
While Troy is a serious yoga teacher, he’s also a very friendly, patient and approachable guy who doesn’t take himself too seriously. With his Acme Yoga Project, he has managed to create a community of several hundred dedicated yoga practitioners of all ages and from all walks of life. A particularly refreshing thing about this secular, contemporary yoga community is that people aren’t image-​oriented and there isn’t any hint of any personality cult/​guru worship or misguided religiosity.

Troy is known in Seattle as the «teacher’s teacher.»
I’m sure most people don’t Unilocal about him because they don’t want others finding out on their incredible yoga secret!
Troy will help any practitioner grow physically, energetically and spiritually. He offers a light-​hearted – yet disciplined and focused – approach to ashtanga/​vinyasa. He’s equipped to instruct even the most advanced practitioner and meets yogis exactly where they are to help them grow.
I am a yoga instructor, and although I have no desire to teach like Troy, I learn such exceptional things from his adjustments, his cuing, his presence, his sequencing and the lessons he discusses in class. I take these treasures with me to my students. I can truly enjoy the seat of a student in Troy’s class, and honestly there are few teachers in Seattle that make me feel so rapt with attention.
The practice is held in a ball room – the natural light is gorgeous, the floor is dusty and there is no music. It’s beautifully introspective, curious, and challenging to practice with Troy.
But… warning, you should have a solid knowledge of yoga postures and a serious practice before you attempt one of his classes.

This is the place to get in on some mysore ashtanga action.

I am not the best yoga practicer. I can only go once a week so when I go, I like to be challenged, stretched, and I like not just working my body, but exercising my mindfulness capacity. Troy provides all of these components in his class. He doesn’t talk too much. He is succinct. He is completely present and focused and gives individual help and attention when needed. I don’t feel the need to try hot yoga because I sweat a lot just doing Ashtanga flow with Troy. I have been going for 5 – 8 years, I can’t remember. I have also tried Mysore and wish I could be so self directed, but I find Troy’s instruction so helpful that I prefer when he is leading the class. I do like that the challenge of Mysore is available to me and I attend infrequently as I aspire to take my practice to a new level. Troy accepts students and meets them at the level they are at and I appreciate that.

Troy is the real deal. He is an exceptional teacher/​guide. If I could give out 10 stars I would. His understanding of teaching/​functional movement/​ashtanga vinyasa yoga are unparalleled in the Seattle area. His adjustments are by far the best I have ever experienced. They not only feel great but have an amazing way of teaching your body what to do. I have been practicing different styles of yoga for years and own a studio in south end. I can honestly say under his watchful eye I have seen more growth in my practice in the last few months than the past couple years. Thank you Troy!

Troy really knows what he’s talking about. He knows about the body and he will not waste 10 months to give you a new pose. If you visit his mysore classes, you can see how strong his students are. I live in the east coast but whenever I visit Seattle, I will set my alarm to wake up early to go to Troy’s class. It’s definitely worth it.

Exceptional yoga with Troy!
I’ve been practicing for a number of years & am always on the lookout for a challenging class with a great instructor. I found it! I usually go to the noon classes which never fail to leave me feeling energized.
I also recommend the morning mysore style class where you will get more 1 on 1 attention. If you are looking to deepen your practice in a self led way it is an awesome opportunity to work with a wonderful teacher.

Troy’s yoga class is exceptional. He’s the real deal.
Troy practiced for many years under the instruction of Ashtangi Richard Freeman and taught at his studio in Boulder for 8 years!
My favorite class is his Mysore-​style Ashtanga class — a self-​practice session from 6:30 — 9 am on weekdays that simultaneously pushes students to be introspective, technical, and self-​guided.
I’ve also attended a few led classes during lunch hour that gave me some compelling new ideas for how to structure my own yoga practice.
The classes aren’t too crowded, the students are thoughtful, and you ALWAYS get at least a little personalized instruction.
Troy is a no B.S., non-​new-​agey, hip guy and his class beats all the other Seattle yoga classes out of the water (not that it’s a competition ;)
