What do many craft beer places need? Some good, creative, love infused food. Billy and Mo’s is going for that market full force. I’m under the impression the beer was the start of things, and they have a decent selection of local and not so local craft beers, plus a few national ones for the uninitiated(really, don’t order Bud here, do yourself a favor and try something new!). When we went, they had only been open a bout a week or so. For so close to the opening, things seemed to be running pretty smooth, so that is a great sign. Service was friendly and helpful with out being pushy. They are still shaking the kinks out of the menu a bit so expect for some changes, things to come and go but it will be fun to see what happens. Our food choices were pretty much settled for us when we heard that both the Pastrami is home made and the andouille sausage as well. That meant the chicken gumbo and anything with the Pastrami were on the top of our list. The gumbo was reich and flavorful and had a nice smoky note. The menu says the Pastrami was in a Burrito, which sounded odd, but Mo, one of the owners, suggested we try it on Rye, the more traditional delivery device. As soon as the sandwiches were set down in front of us the smell of yummy smoked meat. And the taste did not disappoint. This was brisket, cured and then smoked, sliced think and dripping with goodness. The rye was toasted just a bit and the whole sandwich was amazing. Maybe the burrito version is good to, but with this kind of flavor why mess with it? Billy and Mo’s seems like it is going to be a neighbor hood joint where friends come to hang out for a beer or two and then get a bite to eat. Along those lines there is a pay it forward set up where you can buy a friend a beer and the next time they come in it will be waiting for them. Kind of a cool way to build a community around good beer and good food. I hope the neighbors realize how good they have it and come and taste the Pastrami.
