So I’m walking up Avenue U getting some morning exercise and I look in a doorway and see a huge screen with an Italian league soccer match. Next stop, Caffe Venezio!
Entering Caffe Venezia (not to be confused with the Kosher Café Venezia on Coney Island Avenue) is like taking a trip to Italy without having to pay the airfare. Good coffee, ardent fans talking in a mixture of Italian and English, the match being broadcast in Italian and a selection of Italian pasteries, cannolis and cheesecakes on display. Likewise the décor has a distinct Italian café feel.
The sign outside says the place is open 24 hours/​day and I noticed that they are in the midst of moving to the present location from a smaller space next door.
The woman who served me was nice enough but the crowd here seems to be a local crowd not particularly interested in newcomers. So drink your coffee, enjoy the game but do not expect a huge welcome!
