So I’m walking up Avenue U getting some morning exercise and I look in a doorway and see a huge screen with an Italian league soccer match. Next stop, Caffe Venezio! Entering Caffe Venezia(not to be confused with the Kosher Café Venezia on Coney Island Avenue) is like taking a trip to Italy without having to pay the airfare. Good coffee, ardent fans talking in a mixture of Italian and English, the match being broadcast in Italian and a selection of Italian pasteries, cannolis and cheesecakes on display. Likewise the décor has a distinct Italian café feel. The sign outside says the place is open 24 hours/day and I noticed that they are in the midst of moving to the present location from a smaller space next door. The woman who served me was nice enough but the crowd here seems to be a local crowd not particularly interested in newcomers. So drink your coffee, enjoy the game but do not expect a huge welcome!
