BEWARE OF LYME INFESTATION
I stayed at Sunset Beach hotel for a night and walked around the town daytime. Beautiful! Yes
I was bitten by a tick and contracted Lyme disease and my life has been hell ever since. I’ve been in the hospital three times in a 14 month period, have exhausted my finances. I later found out that Shelter Island has a HUGE lyme infestation problem and that the whole island is aware of it. They make no attempts to warn visitors about this. All it would have taken is a brochure or poster in the ferry terminal or in town and I would have recognized the bullseye rash on my leg. As a result my life has been negatively impacted forever. Since it took almost a year and a half to find out the symptoms do not subside and are severe. I wasn’t even in the preserves, only at the beach hotel and cafes. Who would think this could happen?
I think it’s shameful that they do not warn people in an attempt not to lose business.

I do an event here every year and this is probably my favorite beach town on the east coast.
