Place is dangerous, fish is dodgy and my stomach was in serious pain afterwards.

My boyfriend and I absolutely adore this place. We started coming here around 2 years ago and have been loyal ever since. This is our sushi spot. I feel bad for the other Unilocal reviewers who said they had bad service. From my experience they have always treated us like celebrities even with a full house. I would suggest trying their baked oysters, that is a must have.

My husband got sick last night after eating sushi from this restaurant. I had the chicken teriyaki which was the reason I didn’t get sick. This is a shame because they were very nice, but I won’t risk going back.

This place is pretty budget … Greasy tempura, too much salad dressing, hand rolls that look store bought. Not a place I would come back to.

I ordered a lobster roll, seaweed salad, and green mussels to go. The total came out to 25!!! The lobster roll was soooo small & it taste ok. I’ve had better for sure. The seaweed salad was good but it was a small portion The mussels were the best thing I ordered. $ 6.50 for 6 pieces not bad. I also ordered what I thought was eel sauce but it turned out to be some honey syrup concoction. Gross!!! The only reason I gave 2 stars was because the mussels were decent & staff was friendly. I definitely will not be visiting again though

Excellent sushi. The sushi is always fresh and the portions are well served. The restaurant is big Despite the small narrow entry. Super clean subduing bar and fast service. There is a lot of bad restaurant in the valley this one is a stand out great place.

Portions r tiny. Sushi is decent. Portions r tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny So the prices look cheap but when they bring out a «roll» it’s like 5 tiny pieces. Seriously tiny food. Smalllllllllllllll– good but smaaaallll.

Great sushi! A little hole in the wall that you wouldn’t expect, but it was great! And the customer service was amazing! The sushi chef/I think owner was a super nice guy. The yellowtail is a must

We came in for lunch, sat down, and had amazing service. Peter, chef, took excellent care of us. Made great recommendations and provided QUALITYFISH. Sarah, host, provided us also with great hospitality. Thank you Sumo team for a great lunch and experience.

I was expecting a lot more from this place from all the great reviews. None of the rolls I tried really amazed me. Ive had a lot better. Especially at about $ 10 a roll. All the rolls were pretty bland to me. The service was good, even though the waitress didn’t speak any English. I also tried ordering one of the rolls another fellow Unilocaler posted a picture of, but the sushi chef said he can not make it. I would much rather drive down to Montrose or Glendale to have some good sushi next time.

So far I have not had a roll here that I have not enjoyed. The Ultimate Bob Roll is amazing and a complete meal in and of itself. The raw scallop roll is good as is or ordered spicy. Also, their vegetable roll is quite tasty and a nice alternative for people who either vegetarian/vegan or working their up to that gross and disgusting raw fish idea lol :-) The only reason I do not give it 5 stars is because of the lack of different types of sake.

OVERVIEW: Not bad, but also not that good. FOOD: I had two specialty rolls and a couple basic sushi rolls(salmon, tuna, alba, and yellowtail). All tasted pretty bland. The fish didn’t taste fishy, so that’s good, but the overall spectrum was pretty flavorless. For how many specialty rolls they had, none sounded appetizing and it took me a long time to finally force myself to choose one. SERVICE: I thought the service was on par with a «hole in the wall» sushi restaurant. Great sushi chefs and the woman who was waiting tables was very friendly. ATMOSPHERE: Hole in the wall sushi restaurant. Off holiday decorum, dim lit, etc. PRICE: Comparable to others in the nearby area. Middle of the road: Not inexpensive, but not expensive. There’s much better up on Ventura Blvd. PARKING: Parked in the nearby neighborhood. Not ideal, but at least I didn’t have to hunger games it to find a meter.

Came here during the day and we were the only people there. Requests were directly said to the chef from our table. It was like having our own private one! Food is decent, great place to go in the middle of the day while you’re getting your car washed or if you’re in the area. Wasn’t too thrilled about their menu options. They have«interesting» rolls. Place looks pretty run down and kind of smelled fishy when I walked in.

I’ve been eating here for over 10 year, not a fancy place but clean, good quality fish, not frozen, good size portion and very tasty. There is parking in the back. And the owners is involve with his customers.

I have been here a number of times but always forget to write a review. Don’t come in through the back door. You will lose your appetite. The bathrooms are back there and I won’t get graphic… hear my warning. The sushi is ok. The sushi chef is a really nice. The prices are low so they are good for lunch.

Today is not Sushi Sunday! Today is Sushi Saturday! I had a hankering for Sushi and I was asking for suggestions and my helpful Unilocal Add provided a place in my old hood of Van Nuys. Out of all the sushi places that I’ve visited, this is the only sushi place where the name makes sense to me, Sumo Sushi. I just wondered where the Sumos were?! Sumo Sushi is located next to Midas Oil and right near the car wash. Parking is going to be tight especially when its a packed place and great hangout. I do not remember what I ordered besides the Hot Sake! I am still getting used to eating Hand Rolls. The cone shape always intimidate me. I am not sure to use the chopsticks or grab with my hand. The staff and the sushi chef are cool people. When you think you are done with the meal, you get some freebie items. The green mussels were AMAZING! To finish it off, the cherries that complimented the meal. Also, the setting of the restaurant seems more intimate than others that I’ve visited. Again, the other side of the restaurant is a Midas Oil Change Store. So, you can have your car serviced and eat some delicious sushi. However, I am still a beginner in the art of sushi. Every time I eat sushi, I learn and I have fun. You name a food genre where art/food/technique is involved all at once. Sushi is the only one that comes to mind. The staff gave me some good tips and what to order on my next visit. I am looking forward to my return visit. Unilocal! The One Stop Place For Your Everyday Research!
