Lunch Saturday– In town visiting kin folk. As said before, when in town, we stop here. Had the Ferdie again. Good call. Jen had the chicken salad and I had a bite or two. Both were good. Shift change, mid afternoon. The service could have been better but, what the heck.

Went to Bears in Slidell with husband. He ordered Fergie sandwich, said it was great! I ordered Fergie salad, was disgusting! About one third of the lettuce had turned, was brown and mushy. Instead of shredded ham and toast beef on salad, it came with two deli slices on top. Croutons were like small loaves of bread. My husband had ordered fried pickles and while he was still eating, here comes our waitress and asks if she can box it! When we complained to the manager about the salad, she looked at the side plate with the bad lettuce and said she didn’t understand, they haven’t had complaints about the salad before! Hello, look at the bad lettuce! Will not be back!!!

Uncle Ray chose this place for dinner after the funeral of Sweet Aunt Pat. We were first to arrive and found a nice waitress named Mindy. She quickly arranged a large area for the family and began greeting family members as they arrived. 20+ were arranged in two booths and several tables that we shoved together. The house speciality is roast beef po boy dressed(mayo, lettuce, pickles & tomato). It was some good! Meals were served with the help of other staff members. They knew the family was coming from a funeral and were very kind to us all. We took our time and visited over our meal. Glasses were never empty and the service was excellent. Mindy commented that we topped off the end of a double shift for her and said how much she enjoyed the family. I highly recommend this establishment for the food and the service.

In planning a vacation to New Orleans I probably spent more time researching the city’s Po Boy establishments than I did on hotels. While not having the history of Parkway or Domilises, Bear’s Grill was piling up some excellent reviews in the local press and caught my attention. The convenience of the Slidell location, a few blocks from a Swamp Tour we had booked, helped make the decision easy. The location is as bare bones as you can get for a small town bar & restaurant. Surrounding the 15 tables in the establishment were a few beer posters, and some TVs above the bar airing sports highlights. The foot long Roast Beef Po Boy arrived surrounded by a plate of fries and my initial thought was that the beef looked dry, and not much different from a subway roast beef. Once I took the first bite it all changed. I was not prepared for how much gravy was stored in the beef. Each bite got better and better as the bun began to absorb the juices and break down in my hands. Looking down at the mess on my plate, I was thoroughly impressed and satisfied with my decision to visit Bear’s. Definitely a must!

On my way up Gause so I stopped in for my first time. Had a nice crowd for lunch. I have had a lot better food in Slidell. Seems more of a «bar food» place then café. Nothing really to brag about. If I had beer and french fries then it may have been a better experience but for lunch it did not ring my bell. I looked around at other peoples food to see if what I ordered was not a good choice but small sandwich and fries is all I saw. No reason to go back for me as there are better spots to get a nice lunch.

The server was very friendly and all of our food was brought out quickly and correct. The quality of the shrimp isn’t the best, but the baked potato salad was awesome! Portion size is good. I might go back.

My family ate here for lunch and we all had different plates. Ferdi wrap, Cesar Wrap, baked potato salad, and Cesar Salad. It was just okay. We have all had better. The service was slow. The waitress did come by, but when we were done and needed our check, it took too long for her to go get it, then we waited 10 more minutes for her to pick it up. :(

How does this place only have 1 other review besides the one I am about to write? In the city of Nola and it’s metropolitan area people get highly emotional, i’m talking drawing lines in the sand when it comes to their roast beef po-boys. We use the usual measuring stick of «it’s an 8 napkin roast beef» because peeps tend to believe the messier the better. I too have used this as a measuring stick, until I ate at Bear’s. Bear’s roast beef po-boy is my favorite.(I won’t use the term best because everyone will start in with Parkway this and Parasol’s that BS) Bear’s po-boy only requires 1 napkin. That’s right 1! Their gravy is light but still juicy plus they toast the bun which makes all the difference in the world! My favorite Po-boy that they do is the Ferdi. It’s grilled hot ham, roast beef debris(and lots of it) and melted Swiss. If you get a po-boy dressed this includes pickles as any po-boy place worth it’s weight in gravy should. All their po-boys come with fries that are perfect. Crispy on the outside and pillowy softness in the middle… Aaaaah. The last time I came in for my fix(Tuesday 5÷14÷13) the bartender was super friendly. When she carded me, she said«wow, I never would have guessed 36» Either I’m a studly young looking fella or she knows how drain dumbass narcissistic men for better tips. It worked. It was also happy hour so I got 2 for 1 drafts. Their draft beer is served in frozen mugs. Perfect! If I lived in Slidell, I’d be here once a week at least. Luckily they serve these awesome Po-boys in Metairie and Mandeville too!

I’ve actually never visited the place, only had take out. So I can’t comment on the décor or service. I can however comment on the menu selections. The menu items are quite vast in variation. I chose the Maui wrap. It was tasty and quite filling. While I was eating it I vowed to return & get another as this morsel was quite palatable. However, some hours later I felt an uncomfortable, queasiness to my stomach. I think maybe the Maui marinade was a little too rich for me. This ONE experience won’t prevent me from acting on my promise to visit, in person, this establishment. I look forward to sampling other menu items in the near future.
