Hokulia Shave Ice

Went there today and it was awesome. my wife and my daughter loved it. the two guys working were very nice and welcoming and answered our questions. best shaved ice in San Diego for sure. ¹⁰⁄₁₀ would recommend

I LOVE Shave ice! When I was in Hawaii, it was my «go to» treat, as it really is light, and low cal, and not to heavy as are many treats. It really works for my calorie/​figure watching disposition, while tasting VERY indulgent! Now, in the beautiful Solana beach location, it’s great to have it on the mainland! My favorite is «Haupia», with a coconut ice cream center, which reminds me of Maui! (Every trip to Maui demanded Haupia), now it’s HERE! Yum!

I love this place! I often stop there on my way home from school. Their shave ice is refreshing and cool; the only downside is that I always feel like laying on a beach somewhere. The flavors are interesting, especially if you combine them, and have you seen the portion sizes? The best thing is the flawless service– especially that college boy with the dirty blonde hair. He’s very pleasant and we always have great conversations about literature. Well done Hokulia Shave!

Went here after a day at the beach at the end of our staycation in Del Mar. This place hit the spot. Ordered a medium (or Longboard) for $ 6 and added a snowcap (aka condensed milk) which could definitely be shared between two people. We were able to pick 3 different flavors. There are a variety of flavors but not so much where you’re completely overwhelmed. It’s definitely old school, Hawaiian shaved ice style — served in a shack-​like ice cream booth next to CVS. They even have a table outside made with a cupholder built in to hold your shaved ice. I’d come back again. :)

I stopped here on Sunday afternoon when I was driving back from Encinitas.
First, they didn’t know how to give me the discount for checking in on Unilocal.They wanted to make me wait while they called someone, but I told them not to worry about it. Then, they said that they could do it if I paid cash. I did (cuz I love a good deal). So, that all worked out.
I ordered two shortboards (smalls). It took 15 minutes to get them! That’s a ridiculous wait for something like this.
When I finally got my shaved ice, it was okay. After a few bites, it lost some of its flavor and it kind of tasted like feet (freezer burn).
It might’ve been an especially busy day because of Fiesta del Sol, but it wasn’t a great first impression.

The kids and I love this place! Awesome service and lots of yummy flavors to choose from.

Second time and still no shaved ice. This place is a joke. Went there the first time 5 – 6 months ago and they were so slow. After about 15 minutes of waiting and only 2 shaved ice being made, we left for Baskin-​Robbins.
Went back today and at 3pm on a hot Wednesday afternoon… the shack stood empty. We’re going through a major heatwave in San Diego and they’re not open. Do they not want to stay in business???

True Hawaiian shaved ice, just like when we are on the island. Tons of flavored to choose from, kids loved it! And very friendly person working there!

Drove here specifically to buy shaved ice from this business. Unilocal said open today however the business is closed on the day and time it advertises it’s open. Waste of time and effort. We knocked on the door because we can’t believe this is how this business is run!

I’m on the endless search for shaved ice as soft and fluffy as in Hawaii. Still haven’t found it. This place has pretty coarse ice and the syrup just sinks to the bottom instead of magically evenly coating the ice like in Hawaii :(

What fun shave ice is! A friend and I went to beat the heat. Nice young man hooked us up!

I walked all the way from Del Mar and then continued on to Encinitas… ON FOOT. Saw this place and started drooling for fluids, ice, drink.
Darn this S%^^T is good.
Rather steep price considering 7 11 has slurpees for $ 1.79 but for $ 5 you get to choose at least 3 flavors. Let your imagination run wild.
Will return again to say Aloha.

Just like original Hawaiian shave ice. This is not a snow cone people! Fantastic banana and tiger’s blood flavors. Be careful with the sizes because they are super generous with the amount! The service is extremely friendly and they will even add yummy coconut if you would like. Everyone must try this place which will guarantee to put a smile on your face!

I heard good things about Hokulia and I’d have to say it’s pretty good as far as shave ice goes. Still, I’ve not found any shave ice as good as the shave ice I’ve had in Hawaii. The ice at Hokulia is fine (better than most places I’ve got shave ice from here in So Cal) but not quite the same consistency as what you’d find in Hawaii. I would go back, though, for sure.

Hawaiian shaved ice with so many choices to choose from. I got their shortboard size with Pina Colada, watermelon, and blackberry with vanilla ice cream. Yum is all that needs to be said!

I got a message from the owner apologizing for having to close early on the day I previously mentioned due to an emergency and encouraging me to try their shave ice again. Our family did make a second trip and they have expanded their hours. I will say that the shack has a major bee problem, we could not find a safe place to sit and eat and they might be able to remedy this if they packed the ice as they shaved it into the cup versus just letting it fall into the cup which makes it brittle and causes the spills the bees are so attracted to.
The one star updated review is for the owner, who reported my previous picture and review to Unilocal and asked them to remove it. It was a picture of their car, next to the shack — which had closed an hour early with no notice or note. Based on this hypocritical behavior (apologizing and then reporting me) I remain at one star — accept your rating for what it was, I had a very bad experience the first time we visited and reporting me as a way to alter your review is cowardly.

Great flavor and their ice is very fine, just like in Hawaii. We are so excited to have shave ice in our backyard! ALOHA!

Omg! Delicious. I had the short board KONA, which was passion fruit, mango, and pinapple. The ice is delucious, best I’ve ever had. The girl working there was really nice, and explained everything to its as we had never been there before.
Really original ideas you can make your ice sour, or even add I’ve cream to it. Really nice treat. Thank you!

As good as shave ice is gonna get (minus the Hawaii Location)!
Guava is a recommended flavor.
Add the extra sour if that’s what you are into.

Saw this place roadside while in town. Seemed to be newly opened. People working there were friendly and had a huge selection of shaved ice flavors. Overall, slightly more expensive than other shaved ice I’ve had ($ 5 for a small), but they hook it up with a huge amount for the money. Would highly recommend for anyone looking to cool down & will definitely be back when in town.
