The New York steak I ordered was very tough. In addition to the toughness, the steak was cold and the meat had an unfreshness smell. The whole experience was bad.

When in Solvang… eat Danish food… or not! We made a quick pit stop in Solvang after wine tasting with my siblings who were in town(well, in Los Angeles) and decided to have dinner in Solvang so I could show them how neat this town is. We were all pretty hungry but had no idea which place to eat at. We narrowed down a few based on Unilocal reviews and after seeing that this restaurant is in the original set of buildings Solvang was founded from, we decided to pick Bit O’Denmark. We came in and it took us a little while to be seated even though there were no other people in front of us and a majority of the tables were open. The inside of the restaurant makes you feel you are in old-school Europe which helped set a great vibe for the evening. Loved how warm and cozy it was and when it gets cold, it would be nice to sip hot cocoa and eat a hot meal here. The menu itself has a lot to offer, but I wasn’t super hungry after the wine tasting so I opted for the Monte Cristo sandwich(I know, how Danish of me) which ended up being somewhat bigger than I had anticipated it being. My siblings all got more authentic meals and I’d say 3 out of 4 were impressed with their food and enjoyed it. Service was super slow which knocks off a whole star. There weren’t very many people in the restaurant and it took way to long to have our server come and take our order and tend to our needs when we asked him. He was very nice though. Maybe this is average service and I’m just used to everything being hurried along in Los Angeles, but my siblings were also surprised at how slow the service was. I’d add an extra star if the service picks up, but 3 stars tops for the time being!

Very cute, authentic decoration. This town makes you feel you are transported to another era and place altogether and the restaurant does not disappoint on that front. We all had the open buffet to try different dishes. Recommend the Danish meatballs and delicious mashed potatoes.

We had a family lunch during our recent trip to south California. We took and liked the hot lunch option.

This place was a disappointment. Nothing fresh. All the food was kept warm in buffet trays. Bland taste. Horribly outdated décor. Just barely hanging on with the flood of tourists. The mash potatoes were watery and likely from a dehydrated mix. Also, most of the dishes on the menu were at the buffet, so if you MUST eat here, go for the wrinkled soggy food in the buffet and get everything.

We were here last night and not only the service was slow and bad but the food was greasy and tasteless. I had the monte cristo sand which and it tasted like old oil and the fries were cold and soggy. My boyfriend’s burger was ok. The worst part is when I asked for a to go box I opened it to put the rest of the monte cristo in it and a MOTH flew out of the to go box. We were disgusted! Don’t eat here it’s unsanitary!!!

The Monte Christo sandwich is one of the best things I have ever eaten. Worthy of a trip across country. Ham and cheese in a perfectly battered and fried bread with a spectacular raspberry dipping sauce.

Not as good as it was several years ago. Flies kept swarming our booth. A bit overpriced A bit tasteless No soap in the men’s room(empty) so how do they wash their hands?! Not worth the time, expense or trouble.

Currently sitting here in such disappointment. Then again, can you blame me? My dad decided to Google, yes Google a place to eat while in Slovang. He came across this gem and looked it up on Unilocal and told them don’t go. Of course, can’t argue with Dad on a family trip. This place is a little old, apparently the first restaurant in this town. So the building is a bit dusty… There were two servers while working the lunch rush, so it took a little while to get seated and ordered. Decided to order the Monte Cristo, because the server said it’s the best in town. Obviously my expectations are high because my favorite are from Disneyland. Anyways got the Monte Cristo and it was so gross. It should be named monte heaping of mayo cristo. The fruit salad they served with it was rotted and sour. My parents ordered their buffet deal and it wasn’t that great. Overall this place has some potential and friendly servers. I’ll just argue dad out of his google searches. Tasty Tip: At least their water is clean.(Referring to old reviews)

Bit O’Denmark may be very aptly named. I’ll be straight up front here; I am giving both stars to our waitress. She was very kind and helpful to us. She worked as the hostess, the bartender and the waitress for the whole joint… and… she still gave us good service. The place is smack in the middle of Solvang and is decorated very traditional to match the area. That is probably the extent of the use of the word«Bit» in their name. I had the smörgåsbord for dinner which had a variety of things including meatballs, sausage, cabbage, and a variety of salad fixings. The mashed potatoes were definitely from a box(dehydrated flakes) and the gravy tasted from a package. I expected more… We came in for the whole tourist experience, but walked away with a culinary shortcut. If this place revamped the menu and elevated the food, all the other elements are there for a 4 – 5 star review. If you want to go in and have a drink in Denmark… I would recommend, but for dinner… perhaps not.

We walked by this restaurant the previous evening & the delightful aromas of sauerkraut stuck in both our heads so we went to dinner here the following night. I ordered the roasted pork stuffed with prunes with brown gravy, red sweet & sour cabbage, boiled red potatoes, applesauce & pickled cucumbers. When I first tasted my roasted pork and prunes, I was pretty happy — a solid 3 star, maybe even a 3.5. The red cabbage was the star on my plate. Then after 2 – 3 bites the gravy congealed & the pork dried out, neither in a good way. The cabbage & cucumbers were still good but couldn’t save the rest. By the end my pork was dry as dust. My husband ordered the combo plate with sausage and meatball with that same gravy & had a similar gravy experience combined with a lack of flavor on both his entrée items. Service was odd. We had a server in the beginning who seemed friendly & competent but wasn’t permitted to take our order. The bartender who appeared very busy was the person who came to take our order after he finished waiting on all his bar patrons. We could have easily told the first guy our order 5 minutes sooner. We were never approached during dinner to be asked how our food was or even when the check came. When they never ask, it’s because they know they won’t like the answer!

We walked by here one night and were tempted by the smell of red cabbage coming from the open door. Sort of like that CinnaBon smell that grabs your nostrils in the food court. Only different. Done right, red cabbage is really good. So we decided to come back the next night and give in to the temptation. Wish we had resisted. Yeah, it has a Danish menu. A very limited one for sure. We each tried something that sounded SO good on the menu but was profoundly disappointing in reality. My wife got the pork stuffed with prunes. I tried it. Dry as can be. And not«stuffed» at all but more like topped. Not good. I had the combination platter with sausage and Danish meatball — a so called specialty. It wasn’t special at all. An odd meatball and a bratwurst type sausage covered in a gelatinous mess called«gravy» that looked like icing on a donut. Neither dish was any good. Service was pitiful as well. There is nothing to redeem this place. Even the red cabbage. This is a tourist restaurant only. I can’t imagine anyone who has eaten here once would ever come back willingly.

Welcome to Danish California. The food at O Bit of Denmark is varied from Danish favourites with European favourites. Danish meatloaf with fried egg red cabbage, roasted potatoes and cucumber salad. Roast beef with mashed potatoes, cucumber salad and red cabbage The deep fried monte Cristo with fruit. Try the smörgåsbord with a little bit of everything. The Danish meatballs are flavourful little morsels.

DONOTBEDECEIVEDBYTHEGOODREVIEWS. I tried this on a late Saturday night and saw that the reviews were mixed with good and bad. We decided to give it the benefit of the doubt and tried it anyway since it has authentic Danish food. Wait for the food was forever. We got the hakenof and the combination platter. The cabbage was nasty. The hakenof was EXTREMELYCALIFORNIADROUGHTLEVELDRY and the rest was bland. Like no joke bland. The only good thing was the potato with the gravy. The waitress was kind enough to offer streak instead. Pro tip: the cabbage tastes interesting when mixed with the pickles and meat. Pro-er tip: eat somewhere else.

I knew what I was getting into when I crossed the threshold of this Solvang eating establishment. Having grown up in this area I know tourist traps and Bit O’ Denmark plays sweetly into the Danish theme town. Awkwardly I steered clear of having Danish food… again, having grown-up in this part of the world, it isn’t a new thing. Simply put, I was hungry and it was the closest place to where I was. The food was fair and the service was half hearted at best. The restroom… well, let’s not go there. The summery is this: It’s a fair place to sate your hunger.

I can’t speak to the other reviews, but I found the service to be fine. There is a campy retro look to elements of the restaurant, but it has been updated. I also can’t speak to the authenticity of the food, but it was pretty good. I agree with the blandness argument, but maybe that is a Danish thing. I ordered mustard and got… Grey Poupon? .but of course! Strange to not get a better mustard! Probably one of the better options in town. Recommended by the hotelier. Decent lunch special, but I would be reluctant to return for dinner. Beer and a sandwich for $ 20 in a tourist trap town? Thanks!

We went here for dinner on Friday despite so many 3-star Unilocal reviews in this town.(This made us investigate more by looking beyond the«Danish food is bland» reviews.) I ordered hakkebof(ground sirloin steak with a fried egg) and my wife ordered frikadeller(meatballs). I broke the egg yolk to let it mingle with the gravy and beef. So good. The dishes were very good. We both enjoyed the pile of red cabbage, the boiled potatoes in the brown gravy and the unusual dinner breads. Danish food might not be everyone’s thing, but it was a fun change of taste. The wait staff were very friendly and helpful with drink and food recommendations. The streets were quiet for a Friday. We assumed the crowds show up on Saturday. We had no trouble getting a seat at 7. The tables eventually filled up with couples and groups after we arrived. We’ll be back for our next visit.

Perhaps a bit empty just because its at the very end of everything in Solvang but I came here for a legitimate danish dish and got it. The staff was friendly and very helpful in picking out a dish and catered to us very nicely. I like this place as its one of the oldest buildings on Solvang, so it has a lot of history to it. My choice of plate was the frikadeller. Three meatballs covered in a delicious sauce with some mashed potatoes and veggies. I would say the price for plate was a bit high but all the food was very delicious!
