Very disappointing. Tried it out of pity after seeing how empty it was when the other places for breakfast has lines out the door. I think we were the fist there on Saturday morning. Seated very quickly, and ordered fairly quickly(before anyone else got there), but the food took 45 mins. It was just breakfast, really nothing special. They forgot 2 of the 4 drinks and we had to ask 3 times. The food was ok. Very average but not bad by any means. We saw so many people come in after us, wait to be seated then leave after being ignored for 10+ minutes. Several of the ones who did get seated got up and left after not having their order taken for 20+ mins. They are simply understaffed. When the crew came in(looked like they weren’t supposed to be there) it moved much better. Of course we should have been out long before seeing all this, but it all took so long. Even when it came to paying I had to go to the bar, no-one brought us the check. That was all the warm up, heres the kicker, $ 62 for a very basic breakfast for 4 people(2 kids, 2 adults). It was outrageous. It wasn’t even in drinks, one coffee, one team, 2 waters. Unbelievable. No wonder the place is so abandoned, they clearly rely on the tourist trade, because I’m pretty sure they don’t get any repeat business. Shame really.

Went here for lunch with the family yesterday. A clean establishment located in downtown Solvang. Staff was friendly and the food was great. We were given a 10% discount when we mentioned Unilocal. Will return to this restaurant on our next visit to Solvang.

Found this little quaint place while walking down the streets of Solvang with the husband and was recommeded by one of the servers from Mortensen’s Bakery. We decided to try it since I love The Little Mermaid tale so much so why not! We came here for breakfast on a Monday and we were the first customers so we were seated immediately. We don’t know if that’s the case for busy days though. This is a casual place with a Mexican feel and spanish music playing but still with a hint of Danish feel and interior. My husband ordered the Aebleskivers(I’m not sure if I spelled it correctly), sausage and Raspberry iced tea. We both loved the Aebleskivers ~ those balls are soft and tasted really good especially when dipped in the raspberry jam that is served with it. No complains on the sausage as well. I got breakfast plate which consists of 2 eggs(cooked according to your liking)~ scrambled for me, hash browns, fruits, 3 strips of bacon and a slice of toasted bread. My husband loved their hash browns ~ crispy on the outside, soft but cooked on the inside. I had the Jamaica and it was really refreshing. We skipped dessert as we were already full. Check in on Unilocal and you get 10% off your bill. We paid $ 26 which is pretty decent for what we ordered and their service. PS. We forgot to ask for our server’s name but she was really accommodating.

We came here on a Sunday for lunch, and I have to say, it was pretty crappy. Nobody took our order or even brought out drinks for a VERY long time even though it didn’t seem all that crowded, and the food took long as well. It got so bad that I literally wanted to walk away between the water and ordering. It didn’t help that my kiddo was being fussy, which made the wait for exasperating. I got a veggie omelet, while my husband got a plate with sausage. Neither dish was notable, and honestly we didn’t dare ask for anything additional since they couldn’t seem to get their act together.

Was offered coffee when seated, didn’t get it until catching their attention after about 10 minutes, no joke. Getting our order took a looong time too so I was really hesitant to send back the BURNT pancakes that should have never made it out of the kitchen. Disappointing.

8:15 on Saturday and couldn’t get anyone to even seat us. We watched a table of four get up and leave because no one came to take their order. WTF? Aren’t weekends the profitable opportunities for your business? Walked down the street to the Greenhouse and was seated and served immediately.

After ordering we had to wait for the hash browns we ordered(had to ask a different server since our server never checked on us after quickly dumping our original order). We would have asked for salt if anyone came back and checked on us, but luckily I could just get up and get it off the bus cart. The food was ok, but in no way worth the horrible service. As I wrote this, we’ve been waiting for our check probably for 10 minutes. I think I’ll just walk myself to the counter and pay.

I had the Dansk plate and my cousin had the mermaid tacos – and they were both most excellent. Our waitress, Kim was very friendly and helpful and we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. We highly recommend it! (Just a note: they’re closed on Tuesdays.)

This was by far the WORST restaurant experience that I have ever had(and the 4 people I was with can agree). We should have seen it from the beginning when our group of 5 tried to get seated. We originally wanted to go to Polly’s across the street but the wait was too long, and The Little Mermaid was more than half empty. When we walked through the door, the staff seemed so clustered when we tried to get seated. We asked if we should seat ourselves but were told that it depends on how much people we had. They told us to wait while they set up a table. So we sat on a bench outside waiting… for maybe 10 – 15 minutes. We could see everything going on and no one was getting any tables ready(and there were a few empty ones that could have totally fit our group). After walking inside the restaurant to see what’s up, everyone walked passed you not even making eye contact. We finally asked a waitress walking by about our table and she seemed so surprised that we were waiting for a table. She sat us right away(at one of those tables that we were eyeing earlier). A busboy got us our coffee’s and then… Along came the entertainment of the afternoon. I’m not sure if our waitress, Hillary D, was having a bad day and she was just taking it out on us, or if it is just straight up her personality. But boy, she was something. When she came to ask us if we are ready, no one said we were ready yet… my husband had a few questions about the different items on the menu and her response was, «I thought you were ready, why are you asking so many questions?!» And then she proceeded to tell him that he had an «ego.» When he said nothing– not even jokingly– that would make anyone say that. So since he had questions about the meals, she said that she is just going to bring something out for him, like a surprise. My husband said, «Okayyyy…as long as there are some potatoes I’ll be good.» I asked for a side of mashed potatoes, and someone in our group wanted to switch out the Canadian bacon to sausage instead on their breakfast sandwich. Hillary’s response? «OMG my cooks are going to hate you for switching!» She then proceeded to tell us who and how they’re going to be mad at her. She said a few more snarky comments and then left with our orders. After that interaction, we joked about just leaving and going to Polly’s instead. We asked the busboy if Polly’s is any good. He said, «It’s not the greatest thing but they’re always busy, we have never been that busy.» Which kind of says a lot… We decided to stay and just hoped that the food would make up for the horrible service. But NOPE. But before we got our main food, Hilary came back and as she sort of passed by our table(not exactly stopping at it), she mentioned that I will not be getting my mashed potatoes because the cook won’t mash it for me. Uhm… okay?! So as she’s literally walking away I asked can I just get the regular potatoes then. They brought the potatoes out pretty fast after that– it was quite interesting because they were all different kinds of potatoes and all different kinds of cuts, some were cold, some were warm. I’m not saying it was, but it seemed a lot like they gathered all the leftover potatoes that were not eaten by other people. Side note– when a random employee bought the potatoes to our table, he asked if we were going to order anything else or if the potatoes were it. Let me remind you there are 5 people at this table. Do you really think all 5 of us are going to share this side of potatoes? This wasn’t that big of a deal but at this point I feel like every little thing was getting annoying. Then Hilary stops by our table and asks why are we not eating the potatoes(along with some other snarky comments)…well maybe if someone brought us some utensils to use, we could actually eat something. When we finally got our food– I was pretty disappointed. The food did not make up for the service. I got poached eggs for a reason(I love how runny they get), but unfortunately mine were completely cooked. My husband got Hilary’s surprise meal(which he asked that as long as it had potatoes he was fine)…and guess what it didn’t have?! Yep– it did not have any potatoes. Hilary’s excuse was that she didn’t make the meal, she just asked the cooks to make whatever. The only good part was that she didn’t charge us for that meal since he barely ate it. Like I said– WORST experience ever. I was with a food blogger, restaurant GM, and a restaurant consultant– we all get that service won’t be amazing 100% of the time, and that things happen, but this was just something else. It just seemed like from the very beginning to the very end we could not be more amazed of how bad of service was. Everyone who we interacted with was so rude. On top of that for being a breakfast place you would think that they would have a good selection and that the food would actually be satisfactory. But that was not the case. Very disappointing. Don’t waste your time here.

Stopped in for dinner our last night in Solvang. They have a varied menu… something for everyone. I had mermaid tacos. sweetie had Chicken tacos. I have to say these were some really good tacos. First, the tortillas are made there… thick and hot and delicous. My fish tacos rocked… she really liked hers… a nice surprise in a Danish village. But I still can’t believe how good the tortillas were. Elevated the tacos from good to great Service was friendly and efficient also Two thumbs up!

Ate a so-so breakfast here Sunday. I ordered the regular Eggs Benedict and my husband ordered the salmon Eggs Benedict. Both came out with the hollandaise as lumpy as could be. Now, I’ve made hollandaise sauce before and it can get lumpy if you don’t know what you’re doing. I said, if you don’t know what you’re doing. But this is a breakfast joint. They serve breakfast until 2:00 on Sundays. I was starting to understand why the place was empty inside and out. The ham(or Canadian bacon) was nothing great either. I get a better cut for my eggs Benedict at Sprout’s market. I left the English muffin behind. It seemed as though it was an after-thought when could have been a scrumptious part of the breakfast and fantastic delivery system for yolk and the hollandaise sauce(if it were good.) The orange juice seemed fresh squeezed but oh sooooo much pulp. This won’t fly with kids. I was practically chewing it. I appreciate the freshness but personally prefer(at least a little) strainage action. Strainage. Is that a word? Servers were very attentive. As a matter of fact, we got asked too many times, by two separate gals, if we needed something. That’s better than not enough though, right? The problem is, one came right after the next to ask the same question. It gets awkward when that keeps happening. The outside patio was lovely to sit at especially with the great weather we’re having. But, I don’t recommend The Little Mermaid and won’t be returning.

While waiting in line for Paula’s Pancake house for what seamed a long time, my boyfriend & I choosed to give The Little Mermaid a try. When we walked in, we were told we could sit wherever we liked, and the great fast service started right away! I had ordered the Benedict eggs, and my boyfriend ordered chilaquiles. The food was amazing! Great big portions, authentic mexican flavors. Had to take a cup of strong and tasteful coffee to go, to wake me up after the food coma lol! Highly recommended.

For special occasions as a child, my family and I would come here for the abelskievers. Understandably, we were sad when the closed. But, now, like the phoenix and Maya Angelou, they’ve risen again. The older gent who used to make the abelskievers in the right corner has moved on, as has our fave lil olé waitress. Change, can’t stop it. Anyhow, this place now serves the danish faves and mexican food. Apt. I had yummy chilaqiles for breakfast with scrambled eggs and refried beans, good portion size. The table shared an order of the familiar danish cakes, and all was well. Tourist pricing applies, but there was a 10% off with check-in deal running at the time, so holla.

I love this place. I always get great friendly customer service and the breakfast is always fantastic. I’ve been to Paula’s Pancake house several times and found it to be mediocre but The Mermaid never fails to impress. Try the eggs benedict with salmon: The absolute best eggs benedict I’ve ever had. It’s a small business so if you have a large party try calling ahead of time. The Croissant French toast with custard is also amazing and the coffee is above average.

It was our party of 9’s first time here. I had the Abeleskiver and Danish Sausage. Two boys had the Eggs Benedict and the rest ordered Mexican dishes. All plates were scraped clean. Traveling with people who know the difference between good Mexican dishes and okay Mexican dishes kept talking about how their food was so authentic and outstanding. We requested to meet the cook. He was so young and humble. This is a once a year trip. We will be back here next year.

Ordered our food(simple eggs and bacon), server kept saying it was coming out next then disappeared, watched everyone around us order eat and leave, and still no food after 45 min. Realizing this was going no where we asked another server who supposedly was going to check for us, but never returned. Giving up I went to pay the bill for our refreshments, the cashier totally confused struggled to delete our order, the manager hesitant to let us leave without paying for the meal we never got — not until I explained we are near the end of our meal break time, we’ve watched people being seated, served, finish, and leave did he close our our bill. Horrible experience. Myself and my co-worker waisted our time, and lost out on our meal break. Never going back to this place again.

This little restaurant was so crowed on Christmas day since it was one of the few restaurants opened on holiday. I am not sure how they did on the other day, but the staff here really can’t handle the crowed as good as people would expect for a casual dining place.(or it isn’t?) Waiting time: I put my name on the waiting list and then stood in the restaurant, waiting for my name to be called. After 85 min. everybody in my group was going to be crazy so I checked with the staff again and found my name was already crossed out… I guessed the staff probably called my name outside not inside. But the strange thing is that sometimes they called people’s name inside but sometimes outside. I supposed they should do that both but they didn’t. Staff: People here are friendly though the waiting time can kill me. Service is not bad if you get seated. Food: Nothing too special to mention. I ordered a Solvang omelette, which was an OK. My friends ordered the Danish hotdog and a regular brunch meal. The potato, hashbrown, and bacon were a bit overcooked and dry. But the Chai tea latte is good though, which is the only thing I would miss after leave this little town. Overall, I would not eat here agian if I have any chance coming back.

Very nice service. Terrible food. What I got was NOT chilaquiles… Eggs smell weird. «Chilaquiles» taste like stale tortillas soaked in enchilada sauce until soggy and doused in cholula to cover up the non-existent flavor.

On my way back North on a business trip I decided to stop at The Little a Mermaid. I have many friends who come to Solvang. They all talked about the Little Mermaid restaurant that recently opened up. You know what??? My friends were SPOTON!!! I had and interesting combination of aebleskivers and fajitas. I never tried Danish-Mexican fusion before so this was my first time. Just say this… My taste buds were delighted!!! While I was there I got to met the owner, Claus. She was wonderful and friendly. She was staffing her restaurant and tended to all of her guests. We got to talking and she told me about a Faerie Festival that she organizes in Solvang sometime in October. The Faerie Festival will not happen this year but will happen in 2016! Since my wife and I love costumed festivals we will do our best to attend. Bottom Line… Great Food Excellent Service Owner Who Cares! I will most definitely eat here again!!!

Walked by here while waiting for a table somewhere down the street. The wife and I wanted to do an eating tour /grub crawl of Solvang, so seeing the sign for ‘churroskiever’, we were definitely curious and interested. When asking for a table, the guy with a midwest accent told us that it’d be 30 minutes for a table, even though half the restaurant was empty. Short on staff, I guess. However, 10 minutes later, a couple walked up to the counter and were seated immediately. How did that make sense? We resorted to placing a to-go order of the churroskievers. Ended up paying around $ 6.50 for an order of 3. I asked for dulces de leche on the side. I opened up the container to see the little skievers smothered in a pool of the dulces de leche sauce. Great –___-« All in all, the churroskievers were just okay, but definitely needed to be eaten hot. The caramel sauce was overpoweringly sweet and thick and just felt like I was drinking sugar. Not what I wanted. After walking around Solvang, found that an order of 3 abelskievers would run around $ 3.50, so not only did i overpay for a gimmick, it didn’t even satisfy. *sigh* Lesson learned. Churroskievers are inferior to normal abelskievers. And they didn’t even have a raspberry filling!

On our first day in Solvang, prior to checking into our hotel(which provided breakfast all other days) we intended on going to Paula’s Pancake House. We arrived a little late in the morning though, and didn’t feel like waiting in line so we ended up at the Little Mermaid. This is a perfectly fine traditional breakfast place, but don’t go looking for the dutch pancakes Solvang is known for — this is more of a diner like place with eggs and bacon. Those are pretty good, as are the Mexican style offerings we tried(they were on special so I don’t know if they’re every day.) Anyway, the breakfast was just decent. Nothing to really write home about(but there’s always something to write Unilocal about) but also not something I’d tell people to avoid either.

We saw the Little Mermaid Restaurant from across the street and decided to check it out. Initially we thought that it is a place that specializes in seafood but when we are seated down, we were looking at the menu and were confused what cuisine this place is selling. Asked the staff and was told that it is a mix of Mexican, American and Danish cuisine. The exterior of the restaurant and the menu doesn’t quite matches but anyway we decided to give it a try. Salmon Burger: ~ Salmon taste good, but overall presentation of the dish look pretty blend. 7⁄10 Chicken Burrito: ~ Love the stir-fried chicken and vegetables. It is so well-seasoned that I couldn’t stop eating. Very flavorful. 8⁄10 Danish Aebleskiver: ~ Pastry was not as soft as I expected. I have eaten much better one from somewhere nearby. 3⁄10

I brought the family here for breakfast. The place has actually been renamed«La Sirenita» to reflect its the incorporation of Mexican food to the menu. Décor in the place has not improved with tacky three color strobing menu board and lights. Also flies had gotten into the restaurant and were not addressed. Service was adequate and pleasant. Dish breakdown below: Croissant french toast was rich but good Aabelskivers were over-cooked and not light and tender. A worse version of others in town. The Danish sausage was good.

My family and I came to The Little Mermaid for dinner on our last night in Solvang. It’s located on the main street in Solvang and is easy accessible by walking. It’s a cute little restaurant serving up traditional Danish food, American food, and even some Mexican dishes. I don’t normally trust places that specialize in multiple cuisines but I was curious about their Mexican dishes. I ordered their chiles rellenos which came with two chiles, beans, rice, and some chips. The chiles rellenos were really good and had great flavor but the rice and beans could’ve been better. I liked the guacamole and salsa but wish more chips came with the plate; I only got a handful. My mom and sister ordered a burger and a hot dog and they both said their food was good. I did try the sweet potato fries and they were just right. For dessert, we ordered the churro aebleskivers and they were amazing. If you haven’t tried aebleskivers in general, try them now! They’re essentially fried pancake balls. These tasted exactly like a churro and the chocolate sauce on top was perfect. Service was quick and attentive. I don’t remember our servers name but he was really nice, gave us recommendations, and came to check in on us often. The Little Mermaid was a solid spot for dinner in Solvang — if you’re in this part of town, it’s definitely worth a try.

This was easily one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had. I came to Solvang on my vacation. It was Mother’s Day so everything else was at least an hour wait. We walk by this place that didn’t look busy at all. They didn’t have a wait and we were seated pretty quickly. Once we were seated, we wait at least 10 minutes for a menu and then another 15 to get our drink orders. By then we already wanted to order food because we had two starving toddlers. Fast forward 45 minutes after putting out orders in. We have two screaming and antsy toddlers. We wait a little more to give them time but by the hour mark my sister in law decides to check on why it’s taking so long. They tell her that the food is being plated now. The food comes out a few minutes later and the food was cold. There is no way the food was just plated. That’s just wrong right there. An hour of waiting and you get cold food. Not only was the food cold, but we had to beg for a refill of water. To top it all off, when we ask the gentlemen to split our check he ends up charging my card twice! Not cool and then he acts like it was all the machines fault. This place is just a big hot mess. There’s no manager on site, the staff is slow and the food is far below average. The staff needs to be trained better and there was no organization with this place. Like I said it was just a big hot mess. If I could give anyone looking for a good place to eat in solvang, I would go with the lines. There’s a reason why there was no line here. I wish I would have just waited out the line at Paula’s.
