Jonathan and Susan are always fun to talk to, and they know a lot about wine. They both went to UC Davis, and have a strong focus on the very best quality. From their «cold» storage, to the integrated caves where their french oak barrels sit, you can tell pretty well in about 5 minutes this is boutique wine making at its best. I have been a Cedarville customer for over 10 years.
You can expect a specific style and flavor to their wines, a consistency year in and out, with less density than say Napa, and overall lots of unique structure and balance all the way through your palate. These wines are not as «huge» as what the Napa folks produce, but I like that. Cedarville wines always pair best with food for me. The only juice they don’t produce on site is the Naylor Vineyard Petite Sirah. Naylor produces very good wine stock from just a few miles away, so everything here is Fair Play. On the property it is an interesting mix of about 13 acres of organically grown vineyard that produces very small batches of wine. Cedarville is not in any kind of large production mindset, so if you love these wines get them when the newsletter comes out. You can certainly call or email them, and ask to be put on the list. Otherwise call ahead. There is no staff here just the proprietors, so be aware of that.
Life and new offerings change slowly at Cedarville. The varietals are great, but to me their greatest creation is the Turnabout’s. Turnabout’s is a very serious blend. It is modeled after wines Jonathan and Susan found in the Priorat region of Catalonia in Spain, when they visited there. Priorat is a tiny wine region of hot summers and cool windy winters, probably similar to Fair Play. This wine of Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon is amazing. I have had every vintage so far. In fact you will not find a wine quite like the Turnabout’s anywhere else in California. That is the whole point of what Jonathan and Susan are creating…

Some of our dear friends from the Placerville area took us to Cedarville a few weekends ago. It is by appointment only but OMG is it worth making an appointment. My wife is a die hard Cabernet girl and though likes many cabs, she is hung up on George De’LaTour. She said it is in that category so I assumed she had too many tastings but why not try more. We bought a half case and she has now on her third bottle and STILL says it is that good! It is not easy to get on her top 3 list but Jonathan and Susan have done it. I love it as we live in Rescue and not only are they closer, they are approximately 25% of the price we have been paying in Napa. It is all good to my wallet and I must admit I only like whites and their Viognier is to die for! While we did. Ot get to meet Susan, Jonathan is not only a fantastic winemaker, he is an all around fun guy! He loves talking about his wines and techniques and my wife was in awe of his sharing his expertise. Please do yourself a great favor and go there!

You can’t go wrong calling ahead and being treated to some amazing wines at Cedarville Vineyards. Jonathan and Susan are a delightful couple who do it all here. Appointment only but worth the planning.

The owners are both Davis grads from their wine program and make focused, high-​quality craft wines. 100% organic, the wines are very modest and price and exhibit a unilateral quailty across varietals that seldom vineyards can produce. Property is beautiful and slightly tucked away as well.
