I totally agree with «DT»! I was looking for a new hairdresser and someone recommended Mayella. I’m thrilled! Mayella is a skilled hair dresser who has decades of experience cutting hair. She gave me a great hair cut and I’ll be going to her from now on. Her shop is small and reminds me more of an old style barber shop. But don’t let this detract you; she is the most skilled hair dresser I have used in quite a few years! She’s one of many local gems in the town of Somerville!

We were in the Division Street ‘mall’ (plaza, etc) in Somerville last Friday so my husband could take some lessons at the Division Street Music Store (another good place) and while he was off for an hour, I decided to get a hair cut/​color. I haven’t established a favorite salon since I moved to NJ, so with some very long and scraggly hair on my head, I saw Maya’s salon and took a chance, walked in, and was lucky enough to catch her just as a customer walked out and the chair was empty.
Mayela owns «Maye Hair Salon», the little shop in the Division Street Mall, and she’s been cutting hair, as I learned, for over 20 years. I explained what I wanted, and she obliged. I got a single process color, and a fantastic cut for about 80 dollars. I can tell you it’s a fantastic cut because I woke up this morning and did a quick blow-​dry with a tiny bit of product and my hair is fantastic. Bouncy and the layers fall in fetching ways. I didn’t have to work at the hair to get it almost as good as it looked when I walked out of her salon (in the rain) after the cut.
You can tell a person by the way they treat other people, and I think Mayela is a great person for that. Mayela is completely Spanish/​English bilingual. A little old Spanish-​speaking lady came into her shop while I was there, to just sit and talk, and Mayela told me later that this lady came in on a regular basis because she had nowhere else to go, and Mayela encouraged her to come in. She’s also a great listener and a great American success story.
TL;DR: Talented. Precise. Good haircuts. She’s worthy of your business.
