Came here for a quick lunch. I had looked at the menu from the Unilocal app before hand. I was going to order the choose any 3, Maki specials #2.
Restaurant is located in downtown South Amboy. There are plenty of street parking. When I walked in during early lunchtime, there were no customers, but noticed they were sending out a bunch of phone orders. The employees were friendly and greeted me to sit at any table.
I was given a menu and noticed that Maki special I was going to order was not on the menu. Also noticed they have wrote price changes on the menu. Most prices were reduced. I saw the same rolls offered, and didn’t think much of the discrepancy, so I quickly ordered because I could only take a short lunch.
After I placed the order, I was given a basket of fried noodles plus dipping sauce to satiate me as I waited. I though it was odd at a Japanese restaurant, but I wasn’t surprised as most are Chinese owned. The fried noodles didn’t taste normal and think it’s because there’s a garlic flavor to it, plus the dipping sauce which is usually duck sauce was very salty, so I’d avoid that.
The sushi itself was fresh and rolls were good. My gripe was that the triple roll was supposed to be tuna, salmon, and yellow tail as ingredients, but the yellow tail was actually white fish, which i really despise. I’m almost certain of it.
As a whole the restaurant is nice. Employees are very friendly and food comes out at a reasonable time. Typical Japanese paintings located through out, with a picture of venician gondolas sprinkled in, plus old valentine’s day decorations they didn’t feel like taking down. There were also décor from the restaurant that preceded Hibachi express which I think just doesn’t belong.
The bill… so, I did not get the Maki special discount. The price was actually $ 5 more with out it, but I had to get to work and didn’t bother asking, but did grab a menu on the way out. In the car, the take out menu had the specials and they did not give it to me, knowingly or unknowingly. So, if coming here, grab a take out menu at the register and show them the special if ordering certain rolls, you can save some dough. At least they give you oranges for dessert.

I have been ordering take out from here for awhile but I never actually sat down and ate until tonight.
The food is so excellent here, you would never expect to eat such great food in south Amboy.
First of all, I wish I took more pics, their presentation, especially for the sushi, is quite beautiful. But before I could even think to take a pic, hubby and I were scarfing down the food as if we had never been fed before.
So it’s byob, which we happily obliged to do. We started out with their miso soup and salad that comes with all the dinners, great soup, love their ginger dressing. We then had a volcano and sweet potato roll, their sushi is so great! We are definitely going back for just sushi! For dinner I had the «all three hibachi», which is chicken, shrimp and steak, with veggies and fried rice, I opted for the noodles instead which is a minimal up charge. Everything was cooked perfectly, the quality of the food is right up on par with nicer much more expensive restaurants. Hubs had the same as me with just steak. We ended the night with fried ice cream, which was absolutely Delish! The total of this wonderful dinner, $ 42!!! Can you believe that!!! Service is wonderful, everyone there is super sweet!!!

i haven’t eaten in, but have gotten take out and loved it. So if I loved the take out, eating in going to ba amazing. Def get the salmon dumpling!

I love this place! It’s my go to when I don’t feel like leaving the house & going somewhere nice. Everything is delicious, fresh, & filling. I recommend the Snow White roll it’s a perfect combination of flavors. The hibachi is just as good it’s hard to decide what to eat from here because everything is excellent.

This restaurant was deelish. The service was friendly and fast. Its really cute inside. My friend and I went about a week ago and really enjoyed it.

My mother stops by here sometimes. It’s fairly close to us. The food is fresh and made quickly. I usually get cucumber avocado roll and she gets California roll and they’re always good. I will try to eat in one day and explore their menu more.

Super fresh and reasonably priced. Awesome lunch specials and a good amount of vegetarian options.
Sweet potato roll is AMAZING.

Absolutely delicious! We had fried calamari for appetizer… hubby had hibachi steak… I had sushi… Godzilla roll was amazing. Place is immaculately clean! Place is prompt and friendly. Prices are fantastic!

I ordered twice and I absolutely love it! they’re very courteous over the phone and prompt with deliveries. I live about ten miles away and they still wanted my business which is awesome in my book. if you’re going to order anything, I firmly approve of their kani salad, shrimp tempura and spicy tuna roll (spicy tuna could be a tad bit more spicy) but i’d rather it not be spicy enough and just add wasabi. their driver is so nice, he calls you when he’s outside, very convenient. I give this place five stars for their amazing customer service, great tasting food, and affordable prices!

By far the best place ever! Great customer service very friendly and informative. Nice and clean and the sushi is awesome the (yummy yummy roll) is to die for… the fact that it’s a byob is a plus. My family and I go at least once a week! Loveeeee this place!!! Keep up the good job guys

The best sushi I have ever tasted. The prices are reasonable with great portions. The place is very clean and the food is fresh. To top it off, the staff is very helpful and friendly. The fact that it’s byob is the icing on the cake. Will continue to bring my business to this wonderful business.

Amazing food & the service is incredible, splurged on appetizers, hibachi entrée & sushi for 3 adults & it was under 75 $, money left over for a nice bottle of wine to bring. (yes it’s byob :)

I just moved to South Amboy and decided to give it a try. WOW the food is delicious, the staff is great, the waitress was amazing. This place is definitely worth a try and I would come back over and over. The steak and scallop hibachi meal was one of the best that I have ever eaten and I have gone to the so called best hibachi spots. I loved it!!!

Had this place bookmarked to check out, and finally got there two weeks ago for a late lunch with my daughter. Wow is all I can say!
Place was clean, staff were quick and courteous, but the best part of it all, is in fact the food. Everything was so fresh, and yummy, and pricing was not bad either.
What could make my sushi life even better? They deliver! I’ve used them twice since our lunch, and the food they deliver is just as fresh as when you eat in.
Hopefully others will catch on to this place so they can stay around. Spread the word Unilocalers.

We have been ordering takeout from here for about a year now… Everything tastes so fresh and delicious… The people who answer the phone have been always so nice… My husband and I were getting off the train one night and decided to stop in and have dinner… Everyone there was so nice and friendly… The food was delicious and it was late at light and I guess someone who worked there had their daughter there in the booth across from us and we were serenaded by her singing and it was the most adorable thing ever… They always get a nice tip from us for just being so wonderful… Delivery driver delivers the food with a giant smile on his face… Cannot say a bad word about this place.

I was driving back to Jersey from NYC and was craving sushi. This place popped up in my search. It’s a cute place and the sushi was very good. I would come back again!

A pleasant little hidden gem in South Amboy. I was first a little skeptical as the typical local sushi places around the area really are not anything to get excited about however Hibachi Express is worth going to.
SUPER friendly staff, very family oriented, they will make you feel at home which is always nice while eating out.
The seaweed and kani salads are fantastic and if you have never tried them I would definitely recommend doing so.
They have a great selection of makizushi/​futomaki as well as bento boxes so there is a great variety of options if you wish to dine in or take out. Definitely recommend as I was dying for a hibachi/​sushi spot to open in this town.

It’s always the places you expect to let you down that surprise you. This is a little unassuming sushi spot not too far from the S. Amboy train station. It was pretty empty the night I went in, which isn’t surprising seeing as how it’s easy to miss the restaurant. The service was prompt and the waitress was incredibly nice attentive.
I’ve had better sushi before (that’s not saying this sushi is bad. It’s not at all), but seeing as how this place is so close to my house I’ll probably be back very soon.
