Quite a nice little diner just about 10 minutes over the border from the Beloit college campus. I’m still in sticker shock – where else can you get a well cooked 12 ounce steak with sides for $ 15? Steak was cooked to perfection, salad was predictably heavy on iceberg lettuce, cucumber and tasteless hard slices of tomato, but hey, it’s a diner! Pleasant service to boot.

You know the Cheers theme song? Where everybody knows your name? Well, I’m fairly new in town, nobody knows my name and it definitely felt like it here. It is what it is, I guess. Small town family style diner. The food is ok, nothing special but made just fine. The staff is friendly and attentative enough, just other patrons that tend to stare make it a bit uncomfortable. Where’s Norm and Cliff when you need ‘em?

Huge portions of homemade and tasty comfort food portrays Max’s. My stuffed pepper was as large as a huge grapefruit, a red pepper no less, filled with yummy rice and ground beef with a side of mashed potatoes and beef barley soup and several nice dinner rolls. Under $ 7. My wife’s tuna melt was scrumptious, with a cup of barley soup for under $ 5. Pleasant very fast service. Many daily specials. Max’s renders the typical chains obsolete.
