This is a nice place — casual, bustling, very attentive wait staff. I had the General Tsos Chicken — fantastic. It is just the right amount of spice, very fresh rice, and a big portion! I will return next time I’m in South Bend.

$ 27.64 catastrophe!!! On 3÷25÷2016 we ordered the empress chicken, lemon chicken, and butterfly shrimp. All of it was garbage.

It was a fantastic meal. We had great service. A party of seven and no wait time. Seated and served quickly

Just fantastic! The combo rice and combo noodles are super flavorful. The ribs are thick and juicy. The wonton soup is among the best I’ve ever had. Pretty much everything on the menu is sure not to disappoint. We order LOTS with full intentions to take home plenty for leftovers.

People need to stop swinging off this place’s nuts like its the second coming of fuckin’ Chinese food. Its AIGHT. Hell, I’d even call it good. But some of these glowing 5-star reviews are straight out of control. There are no negatives to HPH, it is a stalwart establishment that does a great job of serving you quotidian, non-threatening Chinese food. I have eaten there, and will do so again– it is consistent and delicious. I will not, however, be getting their logo tattooed on my ass or anything like some other reviewers.

Food is good, but traditional american-chinese food.

My first visit, ordered General Tso’s and an egg roll for carry-out. Food was ready fast. The General Tso’s was very dry. The flavor was good, and with some actual sauce might even have been above-average(spicy, not as syrupy as a lot of spots), but it was hard to tell. The egg roll was small. I did really appreciate the small dish of duck sauce included! The prices were high but I thought it would be worth it based on the reviews — but I wouldn’t order this again for any price.

Let me say this first, it’s pretty good. What I really have to say is this is NOT authentic Chinese food. This is Americanized Chinese food. No dim sum, no steamed fish or fish soup. No BBQ chicken feet. I could go on but I think you get it. Like I said, it’s good but it is not authentic Chinese.

I eat here 2 – 3 times per week. I really like Ho Ping House. The only reason I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5 is the spotty service. Lunch is a good deal here– for under $ 10 you receive an entrée, soup, egg roll and a soft drink! The same layout(with a slightly larger entrée portion) is close to $ 20 after 3PM. I usually get Sweet and Sour Chicken(see my photos) with Hot and Sour Soup, egg roll and a Coke.(I also like General Tso’s Chicken!) Most of the staff are attentive and on the ball. Several servers even bring my soup and Coke before they even ask what I am having today. But, there are a couple servers who are slow, and don’t check back during the meal and they allow the Coke glass to get empty.(minus 1 star) The food is consistently good! I really like the Hot and Sour Soup.(I squeeze 3 slices of lemon in for extra tartness and a slightly«fresher» flavor) The entrees are always good and the egg roll is so tasty I save it for dessert! Ho Ping House is consistently one of my favorite restaurants in the South Bend area!

Decent enough place, food is good though a bit pricey for the portion size. Lots of cheesy decorations, almost Vegas-y. Wait staff very attentive, host kinda overbearing, harsh. Felt kinda touristy, or for older folks who don’t get out much. Nice enough, once a year.

One of the best and most authentic Chinese restaurants I have dined at. Ordered their Chicken and shrimp Chow Mein and the egg roll with red chillies in oil. Yes you have to request that specifically. They even had Tsingtao beer. The waitress Phoebe was very friendly and courteous. Will definitely be back here. Wide range of dishes to choose from. In one word — AWESOME! P. S. — was recommended by the front desk at the Holiday Inn Express.

This was the first time for us to be there. The service was great. They were right on top of everything. The food was great as well. My husband had the honey chicken. It was delicious. I had the Moo Sho pork and it was fantastic. The server made all my cakes for me perfectly. Overall it was a great experience.

My fiancé Cate and I sought this restaurant out as an answer to a simple craving for soup and(generically speaking) Asian cuisine. We experienced much, much better. The décor is charming, and the tall booths are lovely for preserving a more intimate dining experience. The music, more than adequate parking, and prompt service by our waiter, Jeremy, was all not only conducive to a great meal but was part of a much better than average«Chinese restaurant» experience. This was really completed by the food. The Sesame Chicken(a standby, I know) was perfectly cooked and fantastically flavored. The egg rolls, the Pork Wonton soup, and the Sweet and Sour pork were balanced(not over-fried or drowned is sauce) and all were delivered quickly and professionally by Jeremy(nicely done, sir). I will make a point of returning next time I’m nearby. Thanks guys!

We had a pretty stellar experience here on a Thursday night strolling in as a party of nearly 30… that’s right, 30 peeps. The hostess didn’t bat an eye at the number and quickly starting preparing a back room that could hold us all. Though we told her we didn’t all need to sit at one table, they were able to seat us together in about 4 different tables in one section. I thought for sure it would take ages to submit orders, bring drinks, serve food — but I was luckily very wrong! My family of borderline lushes went straight to the bar while the preparation started. The bartender was super cool and whipped us up some shochu concoction with lemon and cucumber. I loved it, others didn’t — but huge points for effort and a quick recommendation! The wine selections weren’t too bad(not great, but good for a Chinese restaurant), and we ended up ordered about 6 bottles for the group. They even set up a little drink station so we could serve ourselves. As for the food — we really enjoyed everything we tried. I’ll admit — I had low expectations as I’m not the biggest fan of this particular type of cuisine. But the food tasted super fresh, light and lovely with tons of veggies mixed in. We even asked about the MSG, and they advised they do not use MSG in their food. We tried several shrimp dishes(included the shrimp toast appetizer which was awesome), a lobster dish, some mixed combo under the«specialty» section of the menu and fried rice. Nothing disappointed. Though we asked for our food to be made extra spicy, it didn’t come out spicy at all, but again my expectations were not that this would compare to spicy Thai or anything. It was all still delicious. The atmosphere was very nice, probably better than most Chinese restaurants I’ve visited. The staff was extremely friendly and the price was decent. I can see why my local family recommended this place!

Came here for lunch with my boyfriend and had a good meal. It is a step above your typical Chinese restaurant. It has linen tablecloths and a modern Asian décor. The service was good and quick. The food was tasty and the portions were your typical big plates. Nothing spectacular but definitely a great value for your money.

Atmosphere is great. Service is good. Food is very good. Only thing holding back from 5 stars is overhearing the employees yelling back and forth in Chinese while we were eating.

I was hoping for Ho Ping to be a good experience after getting rained on at the Notre Dame vs Rice football game. The restaurant interior was beautiful and had a calming effect. This was the perfect atmosphere after being surrounded by screaming sports fans. Yin and Yang. The food was good. The service was attentive. The koi pond was mystifying.
