The fresh rolls are the best! Pad Thai is great(use the limes) and the BBQ Pork with rice noodles has great flavor! Very reasonably priced too.

The food is alright. The pad thai was less flavorful than I’m used to. The panang curry I had gotten was too sweet.

I’ve only been here once, and got the Pad Thai. I wasn’t too impressed. While I don’t do very spicey, I do like a little bit of spice, and there was none at all. Also, I didn’t feel like the serving size was very much for the price. The inside of the restaurant was pretty, and cleanly decorated. I am more than willing to give Saigon 88 another try, maybe this time I’ll stick to the traditional Phở.

Very modern look when you come in. Wow! Phở just like Saigon! I hate to say it, but Phở 777 just got knocked out of #1 to #2! 777 is like phở out in the countryside while Saigon 88IS phở in Saigon.

Ambience: quiet, hole-in-the-wall type of place Service: friendly, attentive but not overbearing. Food: tasty! Not too greasy, portions are well-balanced. Rare beef phở is simple but incredible. Overall: best Viet spot in Sparks.

Saigon 88 is run by the Huynh family from Saigon, VIetnam and it is a nice little treat of a place in Sparks in the CVS shopping mall across from the Iron Horse Mall at the corner of Prater and McCarran. It has a nice clean décor, with green walls decorated with Vietnamese scenes in pleasing water colors and black frames, marble table tops, cherry wood seating, track mini spot lights, and has smooth jazz playing on the speakers to add to the relaxed vibe atmosphere. They have a limited menu, and combine both Vietnamese favorites like Cha Gio, Goi Cuon and Phở, with Thai favorites like Tom Yum and Pad Thai. There is a selection of rice plates, too, and they have Hu Tieu, although they call it their seafood special. We had Cha Gio(egg rolls, 4 pieces), and Phở Tai and Phở Tai Nam(beef soup with rice noodles; rare round, and rare round and flank). They were served in classy Japanese styled ceramic decorative udon bowls, rather than those cheap plastic red and white Chinese bowls. They were only $ 6.50 for good sized bowls. I was pleasantly surprised by the deep flavor of the beef broth, and it was fairly clear in color, not doctored up like some places. Since this was the 94th different Phở Noodle restaurant I have eaten in over the past 4 years, I have a little bit of knowledge of Phở, at least what I think is a good bowl. This was good, and the condiments were fresh and tasty as well. The service was prompt and friendly. The Huynh family didn’t get out of Vietnam until 1985, 10 years after the fall of Saigon to the Communists, so you can imagine the memories they have. But they came to California, did nails in San Francisco, and worked their way into this nice restaurant. So come here and support their business, because the food is pretty good and it is a pleasant dining experience at a reasonable price.

Combination Phở — Digging the broth! Nice blend of flavors! The baby and the baby’s daddy were digging it too! Pad Thai — Good, although we’ve had better. Would I get it again? Sure. Grilled lemon grass beef over steamed noodles — the thinly sliced beef lacked flavor, which made the fish sauce a little overpowering. Either the meat or the fish sauce needed something a little extra to give the dish some oomph. Didn’t fancy it at all. Prices were decent, but you can find cheaper phở elsewhere. The menu is limited, but they’ve got a good variety of Vietnamese and Thai dishes. There are definitely a few things that I’d like to try next time. Yes, there’s definitely going to be a next time! 3.5 Stars

I spend a month in the desert east of Reno yearly. Rarely do I go off site, but sometimes I have to do a run into Sparks/Reno because they’re the closest real city. On my one trip this past year, my friend/coworker and I decided to take a break for some well missed Vietnamese food. Saigon 88 is fantastic! Coming from a big dining/foodie city, I have high standards and they met and surpassed them. Great food, great prices, great service, clean establishment and all this coming from a small friendly family operation.
