I would give them less if I could, it’s not that hard to write someone s order down and turn it into the cook, and charging me for something and not giving me.so slack. .the waitress make this place the worst place in spencer..

I come here every time I go to Spencer. I’ve come here since I was little. Under a different name but same good food. Love the red slaw.

The booth was dirty and had the residue of the persons meal before us spread about. Although listed as a bbq restaurant the majority of the items on the menu are breakfast items. The non breakfast items were simply listed as «BBQ». When we asked for an explanation of «BBQ» we were met with a blank stare and rude retort . I would not return to this establishment

Excellent BBQ. Had the BBQ plate & hubby had flounder — I mean talk about perfection. Delicious ! BBQ was smoky and moist, flounder crispy not greasy. White slaw tangy & fresh. Loved it — very pleasantly surprised

Had the small bbq tray — pulled pork, red slaw, hush puppies. Filling. Had the custard pie for dessert. Great food!

Small town old cafeteria/diner feel to the place. Always looks busy so I had to check it out. I had a bbq sandwich and hushpuppies. Hushpuppies were above average, and the bbq was average. This could have been an off time, since I’ve had varying quality bbq at even the highest rated places, but how is a first timer supposed to know that? By going back several times, which might not happen if you don’t live nearby, or if your first time was just so-so and Lexington is just up the road a ways… The service was very good. Any server or employee who happened to be walking by always asked if I needed anything. They are open for reduced hours on Sunday, which is unusual for most bbq joints, and that might be the scenario that has me coming back if I happen to be driving through that area on a sunday with bbq on my mind.

Barbecue chicken was served near room temperature. Told the waitress and she brought me «hot dip» to warm it. Ended up with food poisoning. It may have been my first time having North Carolina barbecue, but food handling and safety isn’t a regional thing.

The BBQ was good and so is the white slaw. We all had the BBQ sandwich. The pork was tender with no fat in it. I would not recommend the onion rings. They were greasy and not worth the price. The main reason I gave this restaurant 3 stars is because they charged $.35 for a glass of water. It wasn’t even in a take out cup. Just think it is tacky and it left me with a bad feeling. Probably will never go back because of that. Too many other better BBQ restaurants around that don’t charge for water.

Hands down, best Southern Barbecue this Northerner/Yankee has had. Every time I visit Spencer, I come here almost immediately upon entering town.

I went with the chix n dumplings w/mixed greens, fried squash, and hushpups(4.95). added a BBQ sandwich(3.55) on the side. The chix n dumplings were really soft(but tasty) and small amount of meat; the sides were middle of the road; the hushpups have very good flavor– sweet and oniony. The BBQ sandwich was good coarse chop(without charging extra), the right amount of red slaw that does not over power the pork and the thin Lexington style sauce on the side. All-in-all a good lunch. The menu reads more like a regular restaurant than str8BBQ spot. So if you want Q and others don’t, there are plenty of other options. Don’t let the 3 stars fool you, I will eat here again. BTW, Waitresses are 20 – 40 yrs old and ALL cute… slid my 3 stars to 4 :)

5 stars for service! I’d have to put a lid on my sweet tea to keep the waitresses from re-filling it every minute. Atmosphere is neat with 50’s décor, keeping in mind this is a joint, nothing fancy. The bbq was good, 3.5 stars, but not necessarily memorable. Added sauce was nice and necessary and i’m into the finely chopped/pulled style. Red slaw was ok and beans were very good. Worth checking out and prices are very reasonable. I actually preferred the bbq to the very highly rated lexington bbq up the road.

Tasty southern food and fair prices with prompt and friendly service. The service in particular is better than I’ve received in restaurants four times the price. And finally, the place has loads of character. The interior design follows a retro 1950’s diner scheme that is loads of fun.

Based on the opinion of 3 «Yelpers» — we stopped by Hendrix after our visit to the NC Transportation Museum. Always like visiting old diners — this one did not disappoint. So much on the wall that it kept our interest while we waited for our lunch. Service was spot on! BBQ… well, not so much — large portion, even for the small dish, accompanied by a sweet BBQ sauce. Excellent hush puppies!

I went to Hendrix BBQ after a visit to the North Carolina Transportation Museum and was not disappointed. A friend from Salisbury, NC had recommended it. I bought a plate of Chopped Pork BBQ, which alread had the sauce on it. This is mid-state BBQ, not the more vinegary type you find in other parts of NC. It already had the sauce in it, although I thought it needed a bit more. I also had a delicious side of collard greens, cooked well but not soggy. They had some pork in them, a good taste and didn’t need any vinegar. I also had baked beans, which were very good with some onions in them. The sweet tea was top-notch. Freshly brewed, I thought. As mentioned in other reviews, the décor is 50s-diner, clean and neat and the service is VERY attentive. I couldn’t have gone thirsty here if I had wanted to!

Let me just start by saying I grew up in Texas so I know about Barbecue. I have lived in Charlotte for over a year and never found anything close to Hendrix. The décor was a nice 50’s diner style and clean but not fancy. We had a large group of 7 and everyone enjoyed their meal. The barbecue tray was the favorite of most. We ordered the«small» which the waitress told us was plenty and she was right! The tray was a small dish about 4″ x 6″ but packed with enough meat for two people. The pork is very moist and has a great smokey taste. The sauce was also wonderful, a vinegar based sauce with a sweet flavor. You can have either white or red slaw. I went with the local favorite red which was terrific. My wife tried the white which she said was good too. We also opted for the hush puppies which were terrific! The wait staff was very friendly and kept our drinks full. The kids meals were a great deal under $ 5 and included free ice cream which was not the kiddie size either. Our overall experience was very pleasant, and it is worth the drive from Charlotte. We will definitely be back.

The Q is tasty and moist with plenty of genuine smoke flavor. The hush puppies have a hint of onion and sweetness(Mmmm-mmm) and the fries were fresh. The BBQ chicken had a nice flavor(check if you are going for this — it’s only served on certain days). The mesquite chicken on salad greens was surprisingly sophisticated in flavor and happened to be one of about three salads I’ve ever eaten on which I enjoyed the flavor of the shredded cheese. I usually order«no cheese, please» on salads, but(happily) forgot. The space is large and plenty roomy. Our server was fast, friendly and brought all of our special requests with a smile. BONUS ** The outside is decorated with several statues of pigs. A personal favorite!
