I’ve never been here before. Trying to erase this review but Unilocal won’t let me so I’m changing it to this.

As Springfield bars go, this bar felt to me more upscale(as opposed to frat-ish) and«urban»(besides the décor, it was one of only two bars in Springfield where I saw African Americans) than the other bars I got to sample while I was there. They have more adventuresome mixed drinks than I had seen elsewhere(see pic), and I ended up chatting with two TV newscasters at the bar, one from Chicago and her friend, a local newscaster that had brought her former college roommate, in for the State Fair, to her favorite Springfield watering hole. Had a great time, was well-treated by staff, and as with all of the Springfield establishments I visited, was super happy with the very low drink prices.

Once again, brave Springfield souls attempt to cater to a live music crowd. Bar None is picking up the trajectory that the late/lamented Underground City Tavern had, by booking bands that quench Springfield’s never ending thirst for rockabilly, roots rock, alt-country, and occasional alt-rock/punk. Whether Bar None has staying power is largely up to Springfield’s apathetic and(in general) intellectually neutered populace. My only advice is to keep beer cheap, and to get more aggressive with booking out of town bands. Since they had the nut-sack to have recently booked SST/Black Flag head honcho Greg Ginn, their heart is in the right place, and they deserve any success that comes their way. Oh, and of course, on , you can’t have a review without mention of the whole«hipster’ phenomena. Yes, there is a «hipster» element, but not as pervasive as it was in the other haven for music/microbrew fans, The Brewhaus, a few years back. Hipsters seem to have assimilated into Springfield culture, hence Bar None is fairly free of any social homogeny that might be of concern to users. Now go, and pound a few!
