Probably only good thing about this place is they are cheAp and friendly. That being said the food was not great, I got egg. Super buttery… biscuits and gravy… Not great… Bacon way too salty and hash browns were good but standard, prob won’t return

Don’t let outside appearances fool you with this great little spot. My family comes here for breakfast, it’s a huge table of people, and they are able to have us in, fed, and out in 45 minutes. We would wait that long at other places, but these gals start pushing tables together and tell us to have a seat! The staff are friendly, welcoming and on point with speedy service. The food is good home cooking with huge portions at great affordable prices. The omelets are as large as babies, and pancakes are the size of your head! Be sure to check the specials board for even more choices!

The place looks at little sketchy but the food is amazing with an unbelievable price. This city girl is satisfied with this small town charming restaurant.

It is what it is… you want tasty fried food at an inexpensive price then this is your place. I hear the service can be spotty but our server(who was slammed all night) still took great care of us. Sure it looks like a throwback to Mayberry but thats part of its charm. I highly recommend a pork tenderloin and onion rings. If your in the mood for some well made home style food then this is a great place to sample and you wont be disappointed.

Order the same dish every time here and am never disappointed. Chicken fried steak, hash browns, sunny side up eggs and toast. The chicken fried steak is tender and always seasoned well. Batter is not crazy thick or greasy. Eggs are always cooked just right, hash browns are crispy, and deliver punch. Services is good but can get very hectic as this place can be packed. All in all a solid breakfest spot.

Really amazing prices, portions and taste! Got their chicken fried steak with salad bar for under $ 8. Great selection of food and items at salad bar. Friendly service. Decorated with antiques. Cute!

I had the chicken fried steak and my friend had the ham. The portions were large and tasted great. My friend commented that her ham was very tender. It definitely was a busy place when we arrived about 11:30 only about three tables were empty and they quickly filled. Great home style food look forward to returning.

Price is cheap and you get what you pay for. This country-style mom-and-pop restaurant feels like a cross between Dennys and cracker barrel. Service was good but crummy atmosphere. There is only 1 table that seats more than 4 people so we waited a long time to be seated. The entire place just feels crowded and uncomfortable, like the people at the next table might as well be in your party. Food was Ok, but i could make just as good at home. Not likely to return here.

Had a steak special. I found out why the price was so cheap. I feel like I was eating Mrs. Dash seasonings and I know the mashed potatoes were instant potato flake mix. Place was scummy and dirty. I hear more positive things about the one on the south side of town but I’m not brave enough to try it.

Even though the cook and waitresses can be scary, some of the best breakfast around. Cheap/huge/and delicious. The 3 things that make a restaurant a definite return! Check it out sometime. Get the chicken fried steak for bfast!

Another Springfield tradition! My grandfather took me here as a child every weekend«still miss the Cedars salt.» No where else in town can you get ginormous portions for less than $ 10. I personally suggest breakfast. Chicken fried steak, 2 eggs, hash brown’s, and biscuits and gravy all for less than $ 8!.. Of course you never know if a meth head is coughing in your food, but hey its cheap, and good!

UPDATE: I called the health department because I wanted to try cedars again. I love the chicken fried steak. I was informed that the health inspector came out again and they were given a clean inspection, so I decided to give them another try. Unfortunately, this visit was very disappointing. The gravy on my chicken fried steak was watery even when it was returned and brought back with supposedly different gravy. The coffee was also watery and luke warm. To top it all off, the potatoes have changed. I was informed that they changed vendors for the potatoes and because of that these new potatoes are just absolutely terrible. They tasted like they were made with nasty tap water. I’ve spoke with the owners in the past who are very nice folks. I Will call and try to talk with them and express my concerns before deciding whether or not I will return to this restaurant. (Previous review) I had such great things to say about this place, but I recently read the health inspection reports and I’m quite bothered. They have A LOT of critical violations during 2013. Not to mention way more non critical violations that are just as bad(«Cooked sausages observed being patted clean of grease with cloth towel») This leaves me to wonder if the have anyone who is food safety certified. I love this restaurant and I want to return, but it’s unsettling when I see last years track record. Someone needs to take their job seriously or be replaced. Sorry Cedars, you’ve been good to me, but I have standards.

This place is NOTSMOKEY, pretty clean overall and a great substitute for the Scramblers that is long gone… Feels like all lifers working here and eating here actually, but if you can get past looking at the Metamucil crowd, be prepared to have a great greasy spoon experience. The eggs and bacon were perfect, the pancakes were huge and yet light to eat. I can’t believe I have never tried here before, and am kicking myself for the lack of an attempt before.

Before I review this place, I need to make a point. This place has the best chicken fried steak breakfast I’ve ever had. I now come here solely for this alone, the rest of the aspects of this establishment are sub par. The rest of the food is very greasy and heavy, and not in that down home style that I love. The servers are hit or miss on service, but don’t expect a smile. The prices are good. Do yourself a favor, have breakfast here and get yourself a chicken fried steak, and plan on feeling like your never wanna see food again for the rest of the day.

I have lived near The Cedars for 6 years and I kick myself constantly for waiting 5 years to try it. From the outside it looks like a place I wouldn’t enjoy, dark and smoky. I ventured in to meet a relative who was passing through and was quite pleased. It is dated in its décor but bright and has a staff that is friendly and hustles. There is no smoking and no smell of smoke either. I visit The Cedars regularly on Sunday mornings for breakfast. The portions are large, the prices are very reasonable, and food is good. I get the bacon and cheese omelet,(this is made with 3 eggs), hash-browns, and biscuit and gravy. After you eat this meal you will be ready for a Sunday nap! Tons of food and the cost is around $ 6.00! Don’t judge a book by its cover, if you live in Springfield or are travelling through, stop in, this place is a gem.

Always a great bet for«home cooking» type stuff, at a good price. Had the catfish today, was perfect and big, first time I had a decent sized catfish eating out in a long time! Price isn’t bad, and that’s always a plus, too. They have loaded hash browns for way less than the Waffle House across the street, and the catfish meal was close in price to the pathetic, thin, over fried thing I got at Captain D’s a while back. Really, I stopped getting catfish unless I cook it, so I was happy tonight, and pleasantly surprised. Chicken and dumplings are good, too. It’s certainly not fancy, and can have kids at night. The fun, loud kind. Service can be not the best sometimes. might forget to refill a glass… but still, it’s really good food for a decent price. I’ve never had anything I didn’t like over the years, and the food has always been good. Can be a bit crowded for lunches, dinners.
