Steak ‘n Shake

So bad. Just plain hated it. Chile was like someone else ate it first– then puked in my bowl. Do you realize your menu says MEAT chile? Not just kidney beans in a bowl of ketchup water??? Flies buzzing around– bad smell in the air– spent most of the rest of the day on the toilet. All sad and true. You people at Steak and Shake better start caring enough to clean up your restaurant and start making QUALITY food or you will all be out of a job. Look around… lots of choices…

Absolutely terrible… Ordered 2 chili mac’s and a couple burgers at the drive thru. Noticed when we got home that there was NO meat on the Chili Mac. In fact… There was only beans… When has Chili Mac had Berns??? (Yes, our receipt was correct –Chili Mac). We live 15 minutes alway so we were not going to drive back to town. This is the SECOND issue we have had at this location. We will never return…

First, let’s address the restroom cleanliness, or lack thereof. Filthy. Floors had obviously not seen clean since the tile was installed. Second, have they changed the quality of their melted cheese? I got this congealed mass of fake off-​white crap. Disgusting. Third, the booth seating was uncomfortable. Sat down and there was little seat support. Sank down so far that my neck was even with the table edge. All in all, a miserable experience. Will not be back.

Worst service EVER. We waited almost 10 min before someone took our order. No silverware, no cheese sauce we paid for, no refills… we asked for all of these and never could get anything but the cheese sauce! They were not busy so that made me even more mad. No one came to check on us at all after the food came! This place has really gone downhill with the service. So sad b/​c we love the food. We won’t go back anymore, this happens almost every time we go.

Infrequent but regular customer here, about 10 times in the last 8 months, primarily drive thru or to-​go. No complaints overall other than how wildly its service varies. Ordered the shooters a few months ago and all of the buns were rock hard. Literally could not bite through them… the cook either didn’t notice (which is frankly amazing) or didn’t care.
Today I waited 30 mins for the same order to go with 3 – 10 people in the restaurant the entire time and no drive thru line. The manager admitted they made a mistake and threw in some free fries so that was cool, but I was literally getting stares from the employees (no one asked me about my order, they eventually figured it out themselves and muttered about it as if I wasn’t there) and customers I had been waiting so long. Probably going to check out some other local joints from now on. I have always loved steak and shake and when this location is on its game I’m a happy camper, but after tonight they’re starting to seem unreliable in both service and quality control.

Wish I could give a no star rating. Worst ever for S n S. Meal wrong, food cold, party got food at different times. Had to ask for more coffee — which I never got, napkins and silverware. Restrooms dirty, half of tables needed cleared when we arrived and all were not cleared by the time we left. Did get a discount on meal, would rather have good food and service. Will never be back.

Just left this S&S. It was not a good experiense. Service was absent. Greeter fail to provide table srevice. Greeter failed to provide place mats. Server failed to bring requested water. Not only once but four times. Server failed to provide food when it was ready. Server failed to provide a second cup of coffee when requested. Servers failed in all categories. The restaurant was busy but not any where near full. The g. M. failed to even invest 1 minute when I left to say sorry. The place was not really clean. In general there was nothing right about this S&S. I asked for a receipt n was told that since I paid cash I could not have one.
My one star rating is much better than they earned

Was traveling and got off the highway to make a quick trip through the drive thru. I encountered one of the most rudest employees that took my order. She did not let me finish before cutting me off, was argumentative about a coupon, gave us the wrong soda and cold fries. I asked her if she was having a bad day after she threw my change at me and she slammed the window shut. Bad, bad, awful, service

Went there after a concert at boondocks decided to go through drive thru. Waited to order and then when we finally were able to place our order we proceeded to wait another 25+ min just to get up to the window after ordering. Then was kept at the window another 5 – 10 min while we were able to watch a lovely lady count ever coin in her drawer not even acknowledging we existed. The guy finally came and proceeded to tell us our balance, no apology. When I mentioned the wait he said we have been very busy. STILL NO APOLOGY. We should have left when waiting in line the food was disgusting couldn’t even finish my Friso melt. At least I had a good convo with the cool dude waiting in line behind me.

Ate Lunch here yesterday, a little late about 2:30 lots of cars. Our server Sade was great, our food was great! Service was top notch and on the mark. But the food came out a little slow but not the servers fault. She went to the extreme to give us great service! Clean restaurant and great burgers, and chilli mac!!!

This is the worst Steak and Shake I’ve eaten at. Dirty sticky floors, nasty bathrooms, and poor waitstaff. I don’t expect 5 star dining at a Steak and Shake but clean is nice.
I asked for cheese fries as did my 2 sons. We got a plastic container of some crap that had the consistency of mashed potatoes. My wife got cheese and bacon fries and she had the usual cheese sauce on hers.
Will avoid this place the next time I’m traveling through Springfield.

Gotten their chili Mac several times an the noodles are over cooked an just nasty. The other one on Dirksen is better

Terrible service, long wait times, many employees on floor and in kitchen, and few customers. No excuse go somewhere else.

We eat here every time we come to town. The food is great and the staff is very friendly and polite;)

In a town of over 100,000, Denny’s and Steak ‘N Shake are the only late-​night options. And then they jack with you play a guessing game of which one of the four locations in town is open and which are closed or drive-​thru only. Such a pain. This one, the last visit, the waitress didn’t want to serve people in the dining room after my group and another came in, I overheard her tell a co-​worker she was locking the doors so no more people would come in. Really?

Ate lunch there today. The dining room supervisor was training new staff. She should have been supervising … it took three tries to get our order right. The first try wasn’t even close. The only thing right the first time was the drinks.
The only adjustment management was willing to make was to bring the corrected order «to go.»
We’ll eat elsewhere next time

Out of my lifetime of going to any restaurant, this one is tops in the worse service and non-​respect to customers. Our waiter threw the straws on our table. Didn’t bring napkins. Spilled my soup and made a big mess on the table. Cleaned off the table but didn’t offer to bring a fresh bowl. No chicken in the chicken gumbo soup. Another waiter got me another bowl and it was cold, I mean really cold. I know this isn’t a 5 star place but, you as a worker should treat it like it is and treat your customers like that as well. And the manager, well that’s another story. I like Steak N Shake. But this one on North Dirksen is the Worse in the whole State of Illinois. Rating 1 to 5, I give it a minus 10.

I went here with my parents shortly after it first opened. The service was horrible. It took 20 minutes to even get our drink orders taken. We just got up and left. My dad complained to the local franchise owners and they were very apologetic. We went back a few weeks later and the service was excellent. Ever since then, this location has been among the best SnS locations I have even been to (and I am a bit of a Steak n Shake aficionado). Good food. Good service. Good price.
