Enjoyed a wonderful dinner with my family. I had a jerked chicken taco and an avocado and roasted pepper taco. They were both very good. My husband had a Cajun snapper which he liked but was a bit spicey for him. My son enjoyed the upside down chicken pot pie. We all had the brownie sundae for dessert which was really good. The waitress was friendly and great. The negative is small size of restaurant and lack of waiting space. This restaurant is in a small house.

While a quaint restaurant located outside of the downtown area of Saint Augustine, it really is not worth the hassle. We started off with some chips and salsa. The chips were round, small corn tortilla variety that you could buy at any grocery. The salsa was so-so. The entrées we tried were the wet burrito and the shrimp curry salad. The shrimp were about the only thing aside from the salad dressing that had any flavor. The coconut was hardly in the salad. It was more like a romaine salad with some toppings on it. The wet burrito is very large as others have described and could feed two people easily. However, it lacked flavor. Overall this is an average restaurant. The only redeeming qualities were the prompt service and friendly staff.

Great place to stop and grab a quick bite to eat. I had the upside down chicken pot pie and it was amazing! Cool setup in an old house. Sit anywhere!

Back 40 is quaint and laid back little café that is inside a small house. The setting and staff are nice enough, but if you blink your eyes as you pass you may miss the location. The food was simply ok. My cuban sandwich was actually tasty with good flavors and crust, but my wife did not enjoy her burrito… which was massive. The chips and salsa appetizer is only $ 4 but it is just a bag of chips on a plate with what tasted like grocery store purchased salsa.

Fresh, delicious, and unique little café located in this old city. Every meal I’ve had is always bursting with fresh ingredients and unique flavorings. My go to is their tacos with a side of the always refreshing pasta salad. If you go after 3PM-? they have happy hour. I get their jerk chicken tacos for $ 2 each. The three bean chili salad is just like a taco salad. It’s outstanding. This is a GREAT place for lunch. Prices very reasonable. Service has always been nothing but outstanding. If you’re vegetarian definitely check this little urban café out. One of my favorites in St. Augustine.

What a great hidden treasure of the south here. The food was awesome. Fresh and tasted great !!! Oh and the portion sizes. Finally a place that understands people don’t have to eat for four! Ambiance was ok. As it was an old house they cleverly turned it into a multi dining roomed pace to hang out and eat. Overall. Would not hesitate to visit again!

Great service from Courtney. This was our first time eating here and we actually discovered this place on Unilocal.Courtney guided us to the right menu choices and the food was fantastic. My friends got the tacos and I got the wet burrito. Both had lots of fresh ingredients and were very good. We live an hour and 15 minutes away from this place but the distance will not hinder us from returning. It was one of the best vegan friendly restaurants we have ever been to.

The best hidden gem as far as restaurants go in St. Augustine, hands down. I’ve visited a few times and everything is YUM! The staff is super friendly and always helpful when I order. You must try the jerk chicken nachos. Excellent and don’t let the small house-turned-restaurant with the hidden parking lot fool you, yes, they’re open and it’s healthy and amazing. Thank me later!

3-bean salad was delicious and easily made vegan; corn chips were delicious and my husband got the wet burrito which was enough to serve 2! Cute atmosphere, unique, with several seating areas inside and out. Certainly an off the main trail place to eat in St Augustine.

My girlfriend lives in St Augustine and showed me this little gem. I CAN’T believe that for years I have been driving right by and didn’t know it existed! I LOVE the atmosphere, it’s an old house with lots of character and quiet. The food is fresh and flavorful. I love the rice bowl and since my friend introduced me, I have been back multiple times and told lots of friends! Definitely check it out! I would go early or late lunch(they get pretty busy)

Found this fantastic place on a business trip. In-fact ate here twice in one week. On the first trip I had the special on the second the cuban. Both were great. This is a casual environment you can eat inside or outside. Service is great the servers are very responsive and food is timely. Note, you can park on either side of the restaurant.

Definitely off-the-beaten-path from the touristy area of San Marco Ave, but I really wanted some casual food highly-rated on Unilocal. Came here close to closing, so twas dark already, and they weren’t joking when they say«Back-40»! …enough for me to almost speed right by the driveway! …and I’m not jokin’ when I say driveway, cuz the place is in some old house with the parking lot out-back behind the house. Totally casual, like I said, cuz I walk in, and I really do feel like I’m in visiting someone’s house! Up-front, there were a handful of tables, so it was close to being a full house at this hour. They were concise/precise by handing me a menu, and they asked for my drink order. I asked for coffee, which resulted in a fresh brew-pot. Though their Upside-Down Chicken Pot Pie sounded intriguing, I didn’t go with that because I figured that they’d prob skimp on the crust. Instead, I went with the Two Tacos(Jerk Chicken) — «Two tacos served with a side of black beans and brown rice, topped with cheese, lettuce, cilantro white sauce, salsa and fresh cilantro.» I had them add avocado, and held the beans. Wait time was about 15 minutes, which was fine, considering I came by right before closing. They tasted pretty good, though one of the tacos contained chicken that tasted like it was made like half an hour ago; and the other taco contained juicier chicken, which tasted like it was made«just now». On top was a pile of shredded iceburg and cheese; plus the white sauce. Seeing the white creamy sauce was my queue to grab the bottle of hot sauce on the table, and douse it for balance. Though tacos were good, the style/taste/look of ‘em reminded me of something that I might’ve gotten for dinner at a friend’s house after an afternoon playdate…(i.e. homemade in a good way, but something I could’ve also made at home, because it really tasted like sauteed chicken breast slathered with jerk chicken seasoning…) For the food and the whole experience, they were OK at 3-stars, though didn’t see the WOW-factor.

Now when you read the name of this place they were really correct in saying it’s the back 40. My GPS had a hard time finding it but. I wanted it and hung ion there and found it. A really small house in the the middle of other houses and a couple of businesses. Like everything in St. Aug you have to look behind everything. In this case that’s where the parking is. I walked in the place not knowing what to expect. So I came in to the living room and walked into the dining room and thru where the kitchen would normally be. Then I turned and saw a walk-in closet which is now the bar area. not much drinking at this bar cause it also doubles as the server/hostess station. Ok the place was a full house so they marched me pass the now kitchen which used to be a couple of bedrooms that the walls went out in the trash one day. Outside to the back patio. Now this place opened up like a flower. A huge parking lot at least huge on St. Augustine’s standards. So I grabbed one of the 5 – 6 picnic tables and I was given my drink. I looked over the menu and went with a diet pleasing quesadilla with shrimp. The fat kid inside of me was screaming really loud for the wet burrito thou. Fight the urge I stayed with the quesadilla when my server returned. The soon to me a lot smaller guy won out this time. When my food arrived it looked like you normal quesadilla and for the most part it was. There was a good amount of chopped up shrimp after all parts is still pieces. There was also some nicely grilled red peppers and onions mixed in with a lack luster showing of cheese. In all a good joint in the woods with a driveway. I will hunt this place down again before my job moves on.

Ok, now this was a cool eatery in the back neighborhoods of St. Augustine along the RR tracks. I felt like we were in a scene from A Time To Kill with Matthew McConaughey & Sandra Bullock driving down a dark road in an unfamiliar neighborhood and then voila! There it was this tiny little white house(I think it was white but not sure as it was soooo dark) that looked like it came straight out of the movie. We sat in one of the bedrooms to eat with another family & were pleasantly surprised with the delicious menu choices. If we ever go back to St. Augustine, we’d definitely go back for more.

I was road tripping with my friends heading home from key west and made a stop in saint Augustine. After finding this location on Unilocal we came in for lunch. The place looks a little off the beaten path and has a private parking lot in the back. There are multiple brightly colored rooms to choose to sit in and each room decorated with paintings from local artists. What can I say — lunch was fantastic. I ordered the wet burrito, which was the largest burrito I’ve ever seen. It was probably the size of 2 – 3 chipotle burritos and only $ 8. They had a nice selection of local craft beers and some from home(they had victory brews which I was surprised to find in Florida). We ordered the nachos for an appetizer, which were also delicious. My friend ordered the chocolate peanut butter and cookie dough cheesecake for dessert and it was essentially orgasmic. Will certainly be missing this place home in Philly — if you live close by, GO.
