This is now called Main Street Deli but it used to be called Hams deli, same location and in fact I saw the same guy(I think owner) in there yesterday when my boyfriend and I ate. I have eaten here multiple times when they first opened but it’s been a couple years since I’ve been back, only because it isn’t very convenient for me. I brought my boyfriend there yesterday for his first time and it was definitely not the same. For $ 25 we got a muffuletta and some sort of spicy sandwich, a very tiny cup(a couple of spoonfuls) of potato salad and Greek pasta salad, and 2 drinks. The muffuletta was pathetic and barely had any meat on it, laughable in fact, there was more thick bread than anything, therefore you couldn’t taste much of the meat or olives. The other sandwich was ok but literally it was lunch meat and chipotle sauce, nothing seamed as original as I remembered. They have a tv and football was playing which was great because the Giants were playing and my boyfriend, who was wearing a bright blue Giants jacket, loved watching the game while we ate lunch UNTIL the owner moved a chair 3 feet from the screen and right in front of the tv blocking half of it, now mind you there were multiple chairs that were not 3 feet from the screen that he could’ve picked as we were the only ones left in the deli. The owner never once turned around to see if he was blocking our view or not. I got up to use the restroom and when I came back the older lady behind the counter who made our sandwiches was now sitting next to the owner and blocking the other side of the tv. I looked at my boyfriend and we both just kind of laughed in disbelief. I wish I would’ve taken a picture at how ridiculous it was. When you can make a sandwich at home better than what you pay $ 8 — $ 9 a piece for then I assure you we will not be back and we are the kind of people that drive 35 minutes to Gioa’s for a sandwich.

The very best sandwich in St. Charles. Great food, great service, at a great price!

Never a bad experience here! The ingredients are always top quality and the sandwiches are hearty. We love their pasta and potato salad too. Above all else, you can always expect some of the best customer service around. You will be treated like you are friends walking into their home kitchen. Definitely a mom and pop place we are happy to support!

I like this little place — the owner couldn’t be more friendly and obviously cares that everyone enjoys themselves. Also extra credit for having a great Main Street location. The place is nice and clean. Prices a bit high, but you kind of expect that given the location. I had the lunch special, which was a brisket«Philly» with chips and a drink for $ 9.50. He explained the lengthy process for transforming brisket into this delicious and verey tender meat. He obviously knows his stuff. The only complaint I have is too many green peppers and not enough meat on my sandwich. The bread was good, but nothing special. I’ll likely go back for lunch sometime. It’s the kind of place you can trust for quality.

The service is poor and the sandwiches are mediocre at best, particularly considering the prices. I’ve visited a few times over the past 18 months always hoping it will get better because it’s local and using a lot of local products; not so far… Today was the worst service yet, the owner wasn’t there and the person behind the counter was overwhelmed with three people to serve.

The owner wants to make YOUR sandwich. He slices Boars Head meat & cheese to order for each sandwich. The man really seems to enjoy creating sandwiches exactly how a customer wants one. Small Build Your Own –Choose 1 meat &1 cheese from these options only: Turkey, Ham, Chicken, American, Provolone, Cheddar. $ 5.35 Large Build Your Own –Choose 2 meats &1 cheese from any of our meats & cheese. $ 6.99 EXTRAMEAT /$ 1.75EXTRACHEESE /.50 (I wish he had a few salads selections with $ 2 meat option) The owner/operator really impressed me when talking to a special needs customer then physical therapist that listened to the conversation. The owner has a good knowledge of what will work on his menu for specific dietary needs. I did not realize how close to the hospital I was till these questions started to be asked/answered. I liked the salad I ordered, BUT he only has two listed. After hearing others order, I knew he likes to make things special for people. This is both good & bad to me. With a limited menu to order from– I wanted a list of items I could get on my sandwiches & salads. I would want a list of heart healthy menu that includes meat & cheese like he described in conversation. Till then, I now now to ask the owner to create something for me.

I feel bad that I can’t leave more stars. The food tasted good and it’s clean… but that’s kind of the main impression I got. Just okay. The prices were high for just meat on bread(and sandwich bread from a bag at that) but the owner clearly has dedicated loyal customers so I might have missed some sandwich that would have rocked my world. I do love that they have local products and sodas(Fitz’s in many flavors) and I’ll probably be back because they’re just down the street at lunchtime but I feel like they can take it up a notch to get more traffic.

I really like this place. Popped in after a long day of shopping on steamy main street. They had awesome salads(I suggest the Greek salad) and they even had fresh cut watermelon instead of chips if you were so inclined. Staff was friendly good amount of choices on the menu and totally reasonable prices. Would definitely recommend.

Tired of Subway? Well, I was too! My boyfriend and I had purchased a Groupon to try out Ham’s Deli, so we decided to head down to Main Street to check out this new deli. Upon walking in the front door, I noticed the sayings on the wall, which made me chuckle to myself. There were several different Cardinals pictures adorning the wall, and the chalkboard filled with creative chalk writing caught my eye. I decided to order the ham and cheese sandwich, since I’m not one to complicate things. My boyfriend order the reuben. The guy at the counter complimented us on our choice of sandwiches, and sliced our meat. The bread was fresh, as well as the meat! I must say, I have never seen someone make a sandwich like this man did. It was piled high, and he didn’t skimp on the meat! Upon checking out, we sat down and began to eat our lunch. My boyfriend decided this was the BEST reuben he had ever had, and I agreed that mine was just as tasty! I will never eat another sandwich anywhere else but at Ham’s Deli. It’s a friendly atmosphere and it’ll keep you coming back for more.

Excellent local deli and a great addition to Main Street. I met my dad there for lunch this afternoon and was also in one day last week. The interior is bright and friendly. The quotes on the wall will make you laugh. Staff are very outgoing. Product is sliced to order after you make a selection. My dad had their Greek Salad today and enjoyed it. It’s plated up as separates and you slice, dress, and mix it as you please. My meatball sandwich this afternoon was fine but I wouldn’t order it again, three big balls in a sweet bbq sauce with provolone. The sandwich I sampled last visit will keep me coming back, though: Hickory Smoked Black Forest Turkey & Ham — ham, turkey, avo, lettuce, red pepper, tomato and balsamic vinaigrette. Prices are tad high; I’d be happy with a smaller portion for less. Parking is on the street, but it’s still easy in & out for a quick, fresh, tasty meal.

Looking for some fresh new food in quaint downtown St Charles? Well stop on in to the newly opened Ham’s Deli on Main st. and say hi. While you’re there grab yourself a freshly made sandwich while relaxing in a friendly and inviting atmosphere. We went down to Main st today to grab some lunch and was surprised to see a new deli that had just opened. Now I am always up for some great deli food, so we decided to give it a try. I must say we were not disappointed. As we walked in we were immediately greeted and made to feel welcome. Almost all the tables were full but the place did not seem crowded(in a good way). It was very streamlined with a crisp clean modern look. After you let them know what you want, one person immediately starts cutting the meat fresh right in front of you and then gives it to the next person so your sandwich can be «built». You have the choice of a few fresh breads(including a great marble rye I might add) and then your sandwich moves to the veggie and topping bar where you let them know whatever else you want on it. Pay the lady and sit down to enjoy. I had the turkey and ham on marble rye while my girlfriend had the classic Italian on whole wheat. They were both very good and decent sized portions. You can opt for the Massive«Mr. Irrelevant Meat Monster» which is a massive 2 pounds of pastrami loaded with toppings for a whopping $ 14.95, but maybe I’ll try to tackle that with two people another day. My only complaint was that the price of the sandwich($ 6.75) did not include chips, you had to buy those separately. We are not talking an enormous size sandwich here, so for that price I would have liked to see chips or another side come with it. Other than that though, this was a great place that I will be more than happy to visit again and I suggest you do the same. It is a great change of pace from all the bars and other sit down restaurants on Downtown Main st. **Edit 7/1/2010** After heading to Hams’ Deli again today, I can tell you that they now have combo specials that come with chips and a drink. Great job guys!!!
