Food was excellent. We stopped in for a late lunch and the owners were very welcoming. Was a great change of pace while traveling, instead of fast food, good southern food. Worth the ½mile drive from the Hwy.

We had dinner on a quiet New Year’s Day at Shug’s. Staff was very helpful in explaining the menu and both my husband and I had the shrimp and grits. Grit cakes, lightly seared(not a pile of mush as usual) and the shrimp was in a lovely light cream sauce with bits of sausage, adding another level of flavor… OUTSTANDING! Blanche, the owner came to our table and chatted for quite awhile because they weren’t real busy. Lovely person, welcoming, warm, and eager to please the customers. Bartender also came and chatted for a bit, and our waitperson(sadly I don’t recall her name) was attentive without hovering. We shared the pecan pie for desert — overall an outstanding meal. St. George will definitely be on our route as often as possible. You won’t regret stopping here!

Southern hospitality and some of the best southern food I’ve ever had! We are on our road trip from Miami to Washington, D.C. And we couldn’t be happier to find this gem on the way. The staff, more like family, were some of it not the kindest people I’ve ever met. I am honestly speechless at the service, big family welcome and incredible food. If you’re looking for a place that’s a few minutes off the highway, I highly recommend this restaurant. If you have a bad attitude, stay away! I don’t want you giving any of my newly found family any grief! but in all seriousness, go to this place!

Setup: My wife and I have been driving for two days on our way to FL and arrived in St George SC about an hour ago for our second layover. We’ve been eating fast food for a day and a half, so we thought we get some good take out to bring back to the room. Rational: After consulting with Unilocal,it was clear that we needed to try«Shugs» as it was rated 4.5 stars… So we ordered the Shrimp and Grits plate as well as an order of Fried Chicken for my wife. Review: OMG… I really don’t understand why they got 4.5 stars, when 5 stars should be mandatory for anyone rating this restaurant. Being from Rhode Island we don’t get many opportunities to try food like this. The Shrimp and Grits was to die for. I’ve never had anything like it before and I’m glad that I have an adventurous Spirit otherwise I would miss out on dishes like this. The Dish was simply heaven on earth. The Fried Chicken was equally as good and a I almost lost a finger trying steal a bite from my wife. Did I mention the corn bread? No I didn’t. Here it goes, Shug must have some kind of magical oven or ingredient because I’ve never had corn bread that was so light or delicious. My only complaint is that there wasn’t 2 lbs of it. I would have included a picture of the food we ordered, but honestly once I took the first bite my mouth, arm and fork became an eating machine that made it all disappear in a most efficient way. Regrets: Didn’t order desert. Staff: Wonderful Future: Will return next year!

Very friendly, fun restaurant. Disco theme-music and glitter ball. Ordered an appetizer(fried rib tips) entrees(petit steak, crab leg and crab cake) and shrimp and grits. Sides of mac and cheese, and collard greens. Everything delicious, particularly the greens and Shrimp which was very large and tender. Including 2 beers, total bill was only $ 43. Amazing

You want shrimp and grits, drive to Shugs on SC state highway 78, exit 77 on I 95. You will experience soft jazz to some of the beautiful food some people call Southern; I call it it some of the staples of life. Simply delicious with family affair that will bring to planning your next visit

Perfect stop just half a mile off hwy 95. Gracious host full of personality greeted us. We started off with a bowl of the chicken soup special Of the day with a half order of shrimp and grits. The grits were in a cake form unlike the creamy version we were expecting but it was full of flavor with the light brothy gravy with smoked meat bits. We sampled each other’s order of country fried steak, pork chops, hamburger and a Bbq hamburger special which included bacon, onion rings cheese and Bbq sauce. The waffle style sweet potato fries came with a light honey butter sauce. Everything really was perfectly seasoned

Looking for an authentic southern restaurant for lunch. Unilocal took us to Shrugs. What a great find. Staff was really great. We had to choose from the buffet and the regular menu. The buffet looked really great but more food than we wanted. We ordered the LARGE fish sandwich. Boy was it ever. Really light batter — like seasoned panco. It was served on grilled bread with home made tarter sauce and lettuce, with cajun fries. Could have shared this meal. I highly recommend if you are looking for great southern food.

Took a break off I-95 and was looking for something healthy and away from being mass produced, was the best decision since I found Shug’s… Blanche & Donnie, the new owners are so welcoming and they def put their heart out in their food, a nice and cozy place with the best soul food you’ll ever have.

Shug’s is run by a man named Noah who is a gentleman and a great soul food chef. I had my first fried pork chop sandwich and loved it. This place is what you hope for when looking for authentic food and people but rarely even find. The place has a very good vibe to it made me happy to be there. They are just a few minutes off of 95 and worth every extra minute.

We stopped in for lunch after looking online at their menu. They had an interesting selection of lunch sandwiches and salads and a good rating, and decided to pull off the freeway and hopefully find some real southern cooking. The waitress, Blanch, was prompt and friendly and soon we had drinks and had ordered our food. The lunch special was fish tacos, which my sister and wife ordered. I ordered the shrimp tacos. My Dad had a half chicken breast sandwich and potato soup. Everything looked delicious and nicely presented. Since there were two of each of the tacos, my sister and I swapped one. We then sat back and enjoyed a delicious meal with Motown hits in the background. What a great find! We even found room to split a decadent piece of pecan pie topped with vanilla ice cream four ways. This was definitely what we were looking for, and will try to stop in again on our return drive.

For any one traveling on route 95 this is Great local business. With the very good prepared food. While there we had some wings with fried chicken, shrimps and 14oz steak got cook mid rare. Boy was it juicy and with it side section you would love. I would recommend this spot. With all the food we had, the price was not bad.

We read all the reviews and found ourself on 95 so had to stop for lunch. When we walked in and saw a sign saying Under new management. So I think past reviews were based on past management. It is has changed and not for the better. It was exactly how Unilocalers described. It is funky with a soul mural was unique Because of the recommendations I ordered the shrimp and grits although it wasn’t on the menu. My husband ordered the daily burger. The smokehouse burger. The burger was barely medium. It was a little too rare. Warning the bbq sauce is heavy so it was messy he couldn’t pick it up. The sauce was just too heavy. My shrimp and grits were okay but definitely not the best I ever had like some other reviews have said. Unfortunately we were disappointed.

This was a soul food place in the fullest meaning of the word. My suggestion: shrimp and grits, delicious! Also tried collars, fried okra and fried chicken– the cook owned every dish. Presentation was neat and unique yet not fussy. This treasure of a culinary experience is both quick and tasty, well worth a pit stop off of 95.

Traveling south on I-95 on Easter Day and getting hungry. Read the review on Unilocal and decided to bypass all the usual fast food right near the exit and drive the extra mile to Shugs. It was certainly worth it. We walked in and the owner(and head cook) said«Welcome to Shugs!». It’s a small place with a great«Soul Train» logo on the back wall, lots of tables, and a bar in the rear. Got some half & half sweet tea and heard about the daily specials. $ 11.00 Easter buffet was fantastic: Fried chicken, ham, macaroni and cheese, greens, sweet yams, and desserts. The family loved it. I got the shrimp and grits and it was very good. Everyone was very friendly and talked to us. Do yourself a favor and stop by Shugs. You’ll love the food(and they might even be having a dance party when you’re there).

Stopped by Shug’s on a roadtrip driving up from Miami to NY. Very friendly, kind people that greeted and left us with big smiles. We tried a little bit of everything and it was all great– Hot wings and BBQ Wings — fried perfectly crispy, BBQ was nice and tangy and sweet, hot wings had a nice unique peppery heat to them, as opposed to lots of other wings out there which just taste like they’re doused in hot sauce. Steak was cooked just how I wanted it, grilled shrimp was great with it too, tasted like a little bit of lime and pepper on them, fantastic. Sides I tried: Mashed potatoes had great garlic & buttery flavor, Collard greens were off the chain, really nice creamy flavor to them, Fried Okra was also excellent, nice thinly fried layer, crispy and nice and soft inside. Sweet Tea, Unsweet Tea, and Lemonade were also all out of this world. THen we finished it all off with a hot brownie & ice cream, brownie was homemade and perfect combination of fudge and cake texture. Friends had the Fried Chicken breast, Chicken & Shrimp Ravioli, Shrimp Salad, and Salmon Salad, and everyone loved their dishes. We ran the whole gamut! Staff was very friendly and conversational, and they have a Soul Train set! I’m sorry we missed the music but I’m sure it gets crazy in there when they get a soul train line going. Very glad we decided to stop here!

What a great place — it doesn’t look like much and the odd Soul Train stage to the side of the dining area threw me off for a bit(and had my other guests raising their eyebrows and wondering if there was going to be entertainment), but the outstanding food more than made-up for any odd décor choices. The shrimp and grits, fish tacos, crab cakes and fried okra were all very good. Additionally, our waiter was exceptionally nice. The price point for the food was also exceptional and made our visit a bargain. Honestly, if you are passing through St. George on I-95, this is a wonderful option for Southern food at a great price. It might take a few more minutes to get your food, but your stomach will thank you for not stopping at some chain or fast food joint.
