Karl’s Klipper Restaurant & Bar

This is a great location. Only a block from the Ferry, but the condition of the restaurant leaves a lot to de desired! They had a leaky roof and evidence that it’s a recurring problem. It’s seems that hey haven’t updated the décor in more than a decade… You can see the wear and tear. The food was mediocre. I ordered some buffalo wings and fries. You can get this anywhere and it may be better.
I have no recommendations to come or not, but don’t say I didn’t warn you!

It’s sad to see this place close at the moment that I just discovered it. I suppose that’s the way of New York City, but I wish I had had a few more moments to savor. You really get the feel of a family-​run, hospitable restaurant when you enter Karl’s Klipper, and feel good when you leave. Friendly, attentive service, reasonable prices, and free soda refills were all part of the appeal. Hopefully, the owners will find a new home in my new borough.

This place is great! The prices are seriously the best in New York, and the food quality is great. We’ve been coming here for years and it’s a great breakfast and lunch place. If you’re hungry and in Staten Island, I would definitely suggest this place

We came in for the first time and had a really nice waitress. She brought buffalo wings which were raw and we sent back at once. My corned beef sandwich was all fat and totally inedible the French fries were ok but we won’t be coming back here any time soon

First of all, let me tell you, I always look for something local-​off the beaten path. My family and I took the Staten Island Ferry at sunset-​a definite must. The kids were starving, so we walked a bit using the Unilocal app, and found this place. It’s clean, and was THE BEST food we had all week. We ordered appetizers, the special of the day, and dessert. There is no bad food here everything was fantastic, and home cooked. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner, it so happened that his daughter was our server. 10/​10, highly recommend.

Food is terrible. Ordered the wings and they were luke warm and bland. I ordered the «hot» and they were barely seasoned. Saving grace is that they have cheap drinks.

The bad reviews really surprised me. I came here before a show at St. George and I had a wonderful time. My friend and I had cheeseburgers and fries and they were so tasty plus the fries were very good. The waitress was super friendly and the food was very inexpensive. I liked the whole casual where everybody knows your name vibe and the tv in the bar area wasn’t super loud so I could here what my friend was saying. Plus they had a bunch of tables by the window so you could look outside while you were eating. What’s not to like?

I was forced to eat here last night bacause i had forgotten to make a resavations elsewhere. The food was gross. Started with the Fried Calamari. They were under cooked and the sauce was Luke warm at best. They had no taste. Fail# I had the shrimp scampi with rice. All I could taste was oil and garlic. Not a good oil! Fail. #2. My husband had the seafood medley. The scallops tasted so bad sort of like bleach??? Fail #3 Additionally, staff were slow and confused. Fail #4. Needless to say, won’t be coming back!

Went to the restaurant with my family so I didn’t try the bar.
The look and decoration is atrocious. They had Christmas lights out in May, the ceiling was falling apart and the floor stuck to your shoes. They had a bunch of paintings and posters of captains and ships, but they had Hawaiian lights and flowers lining the walls. The drinks all had different containers and the tables were all mismatched. They had a bunch of fake plants in the windows and had a plasma TV in the back. The TV is barely watchable because of the constant light shining onto it. The presentation of the food is okay.
The food was good, their soup, onion rings, and buffalo wings were really good. Their hamburgers? Not so much. Mine was way too undercooked and the bun was horrible. Overall it’s some good cheap food, if you pick the right ones.
The service was great, food came in generous portions and in reasonable time. The waitress was really awesome. However I could hear the bartender cursing all the way from my table.
Over all the food is good and well priced, the service is great, and the decoration and atmosphere is horrible.

This place needs a major renovation. The place looks likes it doesnt been redecorated in years. The food is ok but the customer service is great.

Very friendly staff! Try the chicken noodle soup its delicious!

Food was just okay. My daughter loved her burger. Fries were good. Place is pretty big and conveniently located by the ferry. They get an extra star for the super sweet waitress who we all loved.

This place is really bad. Buffalo wings are advertised in 3 places: a sign in the window, on the specials board inside and on a printed specials menu placed inside of the menu. My husband ordered them. 25 minutes later the waitress appears looking very apologetic and saying that they are out of wings and without asking brought buffalo «nuggets» instead. We were not comped anything although that is not what was ordered. Another special was a fried catfish poboy. The fish on my plate was not catfish at all but some other nondescript white fish. There were only 4 occupied tables in the restaurant but somehow the service was very slow. The table next to us must have waited 25 minutes for their check to arrive and dirty plates and glasses were never removed from tables after people had left. Not sure if it was a problem in the kitchen or what. . but something was screwed up.

This place is good in a pinch when you want to grab some beers with a lady friend. Aside from that I’ve had the food here and it was pretty grotesque I wouldn’t bother with it for food purposes. Soup is gross too. This place tends to attract locals but could be jumping with some effort. Save your money for new yoke citay

Went to staten island for the first time ever and we (4 friends and I) were lookin for a good place to eat near the ferry since it was nearing 9 pm n no idea how to get around here so we decided to give this place a try. WORST MISTAKE EVER! We sit and order a soup and they said we can’t order soup because they have no more spoons WAT IN THE WORLD REALLY it’s only us and it sits around 50 people n it’s just 4 of us… Then she followed us for a tip No Thank you never goin back again!

There’s really not much to say. Karl’s Klipper needs a full makeover maybe they can ask Robert Irvine — Food Networks show Resturant Impossible for HELP. This so called Resturant is in a complete downward spiral from being understaffed and extremely slow service to the inability to serve cold beer or even maintain a client base above 6 customers at any given time. Karl’s Klipper at one time may have been a hot spot but is def more of a sore spot. Food isn’t terrible but for a place boasting itself as a Resturant this is average diner food at best. It’s time Karl for some new ideas or some better investors and turn around a place with so much potential in a prime location. When there’s change maybe I can change my opinion but for now can’t reccomend this to anyone who has taste buds or class.

Dirty, drunk owner, warm beer, empty bar, rude bartenders. Head next door to pier 76 or 120 Bay Café for a cleaner and better experience!

Like someone else said, nothing to write home about, but it definitely filled me and I brought home the leftovers. My party had two specials, loaded chili and roast beef sandwich, and a ciabatta grilled cheese and ham sandwich. The fries, macaroni salad, sour cream (probably not made there but still), everything was cooked great and went really well with the other items on the dish.
Even though they were understaffed, we were well attended to, Angela the bar tender on Tuesday afternoons, was really friendly and made sure were taken care of.
If I ever go over to Staten Island again on the ferry, I would probably venture here to have a meal. Mostly because it is unbelievably reasonably priced, but also because it is friendly and has decent food.
