I love this store. No ugly, rude, outdated woman tells you what check-out line to get in like Kroger’s I am so thru with Kroger’s On more than one occasion they told me to get in a line and the check-out actually took longer. This is at all of their stores — their ‘speedy’ checkout so annoying. So, vg’s you are cool

I stopped in on my way home one night and I was pleasantly surprised. I know there are a lot of undesirable reviews, but I thought the store was clean, had a lot of options for brands, and were on point, price wise, as other stores. This was Friday late afternoon too, and it wasn’t crazy busy like some of the other stores in the surrounding area… I will definitely go back. I’m going to make it a point to check up on some of the things people thought were not good about this place.

The prices are high and the service is lacking. I’ve occasionally shopped here for many years and lately the store is steadily getting worse. I asked the manager why only 1 self checkout was open and she snarled at me that she was short personnel and I didn’t have to wait very long. It will take an emergency to get me back in this store.

One of the most horrible customer services I’ve ever witnessed. I’m not sure why or how people even shop grocery shop here. Yes it’s clean and organized but when you have rude employees it makes your shopping experience much less pleasant and after the last encounter I had there I think it’s safe to say I will never be back. I will be much happier driving down the extra mile to Kroger where they thrive on good friendly customer service and prices are low and the produce fresh. VGs gets a big fat F in my book!

Used to come here a lot, pay the premium prices just to shop in a quiet store. It can be so expensive and Kroger is just 1 mile away. This last time is the LAST time. They know my face. I have a VGs card, my drivers license, and a voided check with my name and address on it and they STILL would not take my extra checks(for the same bank account) without my name printed on them. She spent none of her time explaining to me why, or apologizing. I really needed a sincere apology for wasting an hour of my time shopping at their store. She wouldn’t even take a credit card over the phone. I’ve worked at plenty of retailers that«won’t do that,» but when it comes to extenuating circumstances there’s always wiggle room. I left the store without my already bagged $ 100 worth of groceries. All I got was a snarky, «unfortunately, we can’t.» Thanks, Jenny for your extraordinarily bad customer service. F U

VG’s was a regional, family-owned chain that competed at the high end; five years ago it was acquired outright by Spartan Stores and has gradually declined since. The bakery long featured artisan breads, premium baked goods and other sweet treats created wholly in-store — but Spartan almost immediately replaced most of its offerings with generic products baked in Grand Rapids and loaded with preservatives for longer shelf lives… the everyday treats(e.g. chocolate-covered strawberries, premium caramel apples, etc.) were eventually discontinued. The service meat & seafood counter would once cut any piece of meat — no matter how much or little — to your liking, free of charge. It also carried such products as premium kabobs, pinwheels, stuffed chicken breasts, stuffed pork chops, etc. It also had the most comprehensive seafood offerings of any traditional supermarket in the area. But now the service meat & seafood counter has been discontinued, covered up with cheap curtains. Only generic cuts of prepackaged meat remain, and the seafood is limited to bulk frozen packaging(with few exceptions) with minimal selection. The deli was, and still remains, the highlight of VG’s, but it too has suffered. The delicious grilled-to-order panini sandwiches(known for their generous meat & cheese content)? Replaced with generic sandwiches made in Grand Rapids but sold for the same price. And while many selections do remain, unfortunately the price has significantly swelled. VG’s pricing has always been higher than Kroger and Meijer’s, but the service, quality & selection made it worth shopping here; I always considered VG’s a bargain considering most baked goods, meat/seafood & deli selections(especially the prepared meals) were comparable to say Papa Joe’s, but at significantly lower prices — plus neither Kroger nor Meijer had anything comparable. But now that Spartan has taken away most of what VG’s did to differentiate itself, and hiked the price on the rest, there’s just little reason to come here. I say little because the bakery doughnuts are still the best in the area Curiously, several members of Spartan’s executive management team were also at the helm of Farmer Jack early last decade when it began its tailspin(and thus were subsequently dismissed). Four VG’s locations have closed since Christmas Eve… gotta wonder if this one’s next. I’d say so long, old friend… but VG’s died five years ago.

I think that I’m done going to this store. Prices are so much higher than those at Kroger and Meijer. Even the deli, once their high point, is going downhill. I can’t say I’ll never set foot in here again but it would have to be an emergency.

This store was much better under John Houston’s management. I’ve had problems with tons of expired product on the shelves over the past year. Especially watch the dairy and crackers. The deli is very nice and they have some spectacular selections. The bakery is also nice and they have delicious sheet cakes for parties.
