Reformed Body

I’ve been a regular at Reformed Body through ClassPass. It is a small, locally owned, non-​chain studio for barre classes — a method quite similar to what you’ll find at places like Define, Pure Barre, or The Bar Method with their own tweaks and personal touches.

Cubbies are provided to store your belongings which are always visible during class. Grab a set of 2 or 3 lb weights + a ball and find a mat of your choice. Don’t think this is much weight? Just you wait. I love that the mats here are spaced a good distance apart so you don’t feel like you’re breathing down your neighbor’s neck. The bar is a metal pole rather than wood which makes it a little more bearable on the hands.
You start with a quick warm-​up then move on to arms, seat (booty), and finally abs with stretching in between each section. Class sizes are small with usually no more than 8 – 10 people. They spend a good deal of time on arms here which I LOVE — you WILL feel your triceps burning the next day, if not hours after the workout. The studio is kept pretty chilly and you may not break a sweat, but you will get an amazing workout.
Reformed Body is amazingly affordable compared to other barre studios, with monthly memberships at $ 129/​month and student discounts at $ 75/​month — you won’t find that anywhere else! I would definitely join if I lived in the Sugar Land area, but will continue to enjoy Reformed on ClassPass for now!

«Barre for your booty.» The «ass class.» (Ok, I made that last one up.) Whatever you decide to call it, barre fitness is the female body’s best friend… and it is currently my latest fitness addiction! A combination of pilates, yoga, and ballet, barre’s main focus is to tone, sculpt, strengthen, and lengthen muscles. It cracks down –hard– on several female «problem» areas, such as triceps, quads, hamstrings, inner thighs (hello-​o-​o thigh gap!), oblique and abs (bye-​bye love handles!), and that oh-​so-​wonderful gluteus maximus. Ladies, if you’ve ever been concerned about toning up without bulking out, THIS is the class to take. Barre will get you on track towards that long, slender dancer’s body you’ve always wanted.
Eager to try out a barre class, I was psyched to discover Reformed Body offering 5 and 10 class-​packs on Groupon. Their studio is spacious, spotless, and very classy — with cubbies for your belongings, all the weights and equipment you’ll need for class, and enough floor space for 18 people. All you need to bring are socks. While grip socks are preferred, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem if you wear regular socks — just mind your footing so you don’t slip on their slick wooden floor. Class size is on the small side: on average, there are usually 5 – 6 other people there with you. I’ve tried out a few different instructors, but owner Rachel is my fave: she’s young and full of energy, encouraging, and her playlist simply kicks ass. In fact, she plays a lot of the EDM faves I have on my iPod!
So what does a Reformed Barre class look like? You’ll grab a set of light weights and a set of heavier weights (for beginners, it’ll usually be 2lbs & 3lbs respectively), a ball, and a stretch band. The studio has a ballet bar on each side of the room and they recommend that beginners set up on the side with the mirror so you can check your form. In this class, expect an all-​over body workout, but with an emphasis on thighs, abs, arms, and glutes. The workouts involve small, repetitive isometric movements (think «pulses,» «squeezes» and «clenches»), which doesn’t sound scary at first, but I promise your muscles will be SHAKING with exhaustion after a few reps. Rachel gives tons of modifications based on your skill level, and while she’ll correct your form if needed, she won’t call you out or anything for taking breaks. She also dedicates ample time in between body areas and at the end of class for some soothing and relaxing full-​body stretches, so my body never feels cramped up the day after. However, just in my personal opinion, I found the pace of Reformed Barre to be a little slow. I wasn’t sweating at all, which was concerning since «sweat is fat crying» and all. So, if you’re like me and you want a challenge, sign up for their Cardio Barre class! It’s basically the same concept as regular barre except with some cardio circuits thrown in — this little change makes a HUGE difference and REALLY gets your heart pumping. I just took this class today: not only was I sweating bullets, but my entire body was literally shaking from exhaustion. IT HURTS SO GOOD! Too bad they only offer Cardio Barre once a week though…
In any case, Reformed Body has done a great job at introducing me to the surprisingly strenuous, yet amazing and rewarding world of barre. It’s seriously TOUGH work, but feeling the increasing tightness and definition of my leg muscles is SO worth it. Although my Groupon special is ending this week, my adventures with Reformed Body aren’t over. This is going to be one of my go-​to studios when I sign up for ClassPass later this month!

I love the classes. The teachers are very encouraging and pleasant. It is a tough workout, but I enjoy it. And I am not a masochist. The music, instructors and serene décor have made me a life long barre girl.

5 stars for the Reformed Cardio, 3 stars for Reformed Barre
This studio is very spacious, clean, and bright — nice spot in Sugar Land. I was surprised by how few people attended the classes (Friday morning I understand, but Sunday morning was also only about 7 people — a huge difference from the packed Chicago/​New York barre classes I’m used to) which should have offered more room for personalized attention, but it was minimal. Exercises were easy to follow along with though, and instructors were clear and demonstrated the moves well.
Barre exercises are what you’d expect — thigh work, seat work, ab work. The cardio class went by extremely quickly and I had a lot of fun.
Also, one of my biggest pet peeves is when instructors try to be motivating by saying things such as «spring break is coming — let’s shrink those tummies!» or «think about all the margaritas you’ll be having later!» I respond much better when instructors emphasize strength-​building, pushing personal limits, etc. This is definitely a personal preference though, as I’m sure others aren’t bothered by this at all.
Overall, would return probably only for the cardio class (Rachel is an awesome instructor) and they’re not so expensive at $ 20 per class either. Great addition to the area!

The first time I walked into the Reformed Body Studio I was extremely out of shape. I had low energy and was having hard time getting motivated to work out at the gym, now it’s quite the opposite. I love going to class! It’s the highlight of my day. All the instructors are awesome and really help with encouragement. I’ve been so impressed with everyone and the studio is simply gorgeous. I am so grateful that I found Barre but even more grateful that I found Reformed Body

Friendly, clean, and effective. This place gets the job done! Love the upbeat music during class, and people of all levels are welcome. Barre combines yoga, pilates, weight lifting, and plyometrics in a 60 minute sweat inducing workout. I can definitely feel the burn after each and every class. Losing weight and toning up have never been so fun! Loves it!
Classes are about $ 20 each, but they offer packages and discounts on their website. Check them out!

This is a great place to get a fantastic work out! The instructors are friendly and upbeat and willing to offer modifications (which help me as I’m dealing with an injury). The music is great, lots of BPM and Electronic. And the studio is very intimate, which makes the overall class that much better. Love every bit of my experience as a regular member of Reformed Body!

Reformed Body is fantastic! Every class is a great one. The instructors offer modifications to make each move easier or harder. They encourage you to listen to your body but they also push you to achieve what you came there to do! Workouts are tough but that’s why we are there! Rachel and Sarah, the owners, are both wonderful. I am not in great shape, but can feel myself getting stronger, and have never felt intimidated or out of place if I had to modify to make something easier or take a moment to shake it out! Any skill level would benefit from this class!

IT HURTS SO GOOD. Flu and allergy season is upon us, so every time I sneeze, my abs feel sore. I bought 10 classes and I like it so far, especially the online registration system that allows you to plan your schedule.
I did not inherit my mom’s grace. My only experience with ballet was at 3 years old, when she dragged me to my first class with promise of ice cream after. I was horrible and cried and never returned. Barre does involve a ballet barre, but it’s very basic and suitable for any level. The various workouts target specific areas– thighs, abs, arms, seat (classier way of saying ass). The key focus is on small movements and repetition, so you’ll catch on eventually. It’s also set to very current and upbeat music, which really helps keep the rhythm and makes the class more fun. The only time I was totally turned off was by a Miley Cyrus song, but I channeled that anger into the workout.
They keep the studio at arctic temperatures, so I barely break a sweat, but I know I’m working hard because my legs start shaking uncontrollably after the 100^th squat while squeezing a ball between my thighs. The struggle is real. To avoid overworking your muscles, they recommend only 3 – 4 classes per week. I’d say barre is specifically for toning up, so it’s probably beneficial to supplement with some cardio if weight loss is a goal.
If you really give it your all, the workout routine will kick your ass. Pardon me, I mean seat.

I came here because I bought a groupon. I think the classes are fine, and the instructor was sweet and upbeat — but having been to their competitor, my ‘bar’ is now set higher.
As a new person walking into the class, I was a bit taken aback that the Reformed body instructor didn’t make an effort to get to know me, nor did she ask if I needed any modifications, etc.
When I walked into their competitor company, the instructor made every effort to get to know me in class and make me feel comfortable — without breaking her rhythm to teach.
I happen to be pregnant and I am very happy that my first barre class was with their competitor rather than Reformed body — because the teacher at the competitor location made a concerted effort to teach me all of the modifications, and adjust my body so that I can get a safe, effective workout. Again, I did not get any of that individual attention at Reformed Body. But since I’d previously taken a class at their competitor, I already knew what modifications were needed.
Not only did i get a superior ‘welcome’ as a first timer at the competitor, I also got a better workout.

I bought a 2-​week unlimited Living Social deal for this studio. I had been wanting to try out a barre class for a while, but the price was holding me back. I have since taken 5 classes at this studio and loved every one of them. Chelsea is very friendly and an awesome teacher. You can tell that she is very knowledgeable about each exercise and helps you execute it correctly. I would consider myself pretty in-​shape as I run regularly and hit up my normal gym 3 – 5 times a week, however this workout had my muscles burning throughout the class and sore the next day. (Signs of a good workout in my book). I have a dance background which I think helped me some with correct form, but this class is geared for everyone and is a great, fun workout. So glad I tried these classes and would definitely come back for more!

I tried out Reformed Barre with a 5-​class Groupon deal & have been itching to go back ever since. The 1 hour is set to an upbeat playlist & the time flies by as you target toning each area of your body. I was a bit hesitant to start since I had never done barre and was intimidated by group classes, but the instructors are so friendly along with the other students in class. I’ve noticed small improvements already after my 5 classes and could only imagine the wonders of barre if I had continued practicing. The studio is beautiful with purple hues, a crystal chandelier, and dark wooden floors. Everything is new and more importantly the space & equipment are kept very clean. The room itself where classes are held is small and there was on average 6 – 7 other students each time I attended. You can sign up for classes online to reserve your spot. The classes are a bit pricey at $ 20 per class but it’s comparable to Yoga or Pilates classes at other studios. Overall, it’s a great workout and I hope to start up again one day.

I don’t think I have ever enjoyed a fitness class as much as this one! Rachel, the owner, and her sister are so sweet and nice. The studio is gorgeous with black wood floors and a chandelier. The detail in this studio is amazing. The mats and equipment are brand new. Most importantly it is kept pristinely clean. After each session we wipe down our own mats with towels and sanitizer spray.
As for the barre class: it starts off with arm work with upper body work using lightweight dumbbells for some exercises. Then some good old thigh and butt work! Followed by floor ab workouts. This class is amazing. I usually get bored or feel like it’s too intense or not enough of a workout. Reformed Body’s barre class is just my cup of tea. I walked away feeling I got a great workout but wasn’t crawling out the door. I definitely broke a sweat doing the exercises if you think this class is too light. My friend also told me Rachel changes up the exercises so if you go a lot you won’t get bored of the routine. I’ve already purchased a Groupon for 10 classes and bought some very cute workout clothes there. It’s very easy signing up for classes on their website as well. I’m going back as soon as I can!
