One of the most visible and recognizable cafes on Queens Blvd happens to be a lovely Sunnyside neighborhood gem. Formally El Triumfo Bakery & Café, this little bakery specializes in various baked goods from cakes to pastries. Since there are a dime a dozen panaderias /pastelerias all along Queens Blvd and Greenpoint Avenue, it’s tough to find one that stands out. Being this is right off of the 40th Street stop, it becomes easy to stop in here for a small snack or the perfect dessert. The place is small, just good enough for about 6 tables that can fit 2 – 3 people each. There is usually a TV playing in the background and always in Spanish. And regarding Spanish, speaking it in any form(un poco or con fluidez!) will be helpful. The nice couple that own the joint seem to deal with Spanish speaking customers the most and answer their phones in Espanol. Their daughter who mans the counter on occasion speaks good English, but don’t count on her being there during the daytime. My favorite item is here is their display cakes, which from what I know are prepped daily. Most of the the cakes I’ve purchased here are fluffy and light, with plenty of cream and simple presentation. Customizing the cakes with unique messages can be a chore depending on who’s doing the designing, better make sure to have the owner handle this task. Other note worthy items are their Colombian sausages, cookies, and small desserts.
